My feelings on The Demon Rush
Well that was a good roundtable! I'll make a thread going over discussion of the roundtable itself tomorrow.

Duckfist: No, there's nothing in it regarding being on camera, and that is something we'll need to cover for AGDQ 2014. About name tags, with the badges I'll need to figure out if that will be an issue.

An ASL stream would be awesome! The biggest problem would be finding people dedicated.

bangagong: thanks, and yeah marathons are fun.

EDIT: Whoops I meant ASL, not SRL.

I feel like a 2nd stream should not be a thing unless it has a very specific purpose that does not detract from the main stream. Splitting viewer attention is usually a bad thing.

Quote from MarioGalaxy2433g5:
I had a suggestion in the game page design forum about having preloads to automate creating game pages a little. Basically, you can have a button that makes it so you can automatically add certain things to a page when it is being created. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Preload

Excellent point.. That's something I wanted to ask but I forgot. I didn't know the term "preload", I'd have said "Template". Or is that a different thing?

Also I wondered, whether implementing a Rich Text Editor of some sort would be an option. Currently editing the KB is almost "science". While I as a programmer prefer to have basic codes to work with to format texts, I imagine a lot of people are scared away from it. As someone mentioned earlier - Inputting information and/or a new page into the Wiki should be as easy as possible, so it doesn't feel like it's a chore before even starting
A second stream could be as simple as a rebroadcast.

If a second stream would surface,
Could have donation goals, stuff like in the past there was that second stream.
Maybe have a slide rotation with "Currently played, next 5 games" and so on..
Can remind people with stuff that is ongoing. Shouldn't be too hard to do a automatic scene rotation with xsplit and a simple HTML page or .txt file embedded there. Maybe takes a day to get something simple rolling, tried the automatic text update and it's pretty easy to work with. Most of this should be rather easy to automate.

"Understream" and such could be provided during the downtime of setup if there is time, maybe have runners say a few words after their run, throw some shout outs and such..

Much potential on supporting the main stream without distracting away too much from it, even with a crummy 500Kbit output you could still do decent fps and high resolution, since most of the content could slides, it should only take 2-3 seconds to transmit a sharp 720p frame.

Have it as a non-critical setup where you wouldn't feel super stressed when connecting a digital camera to show some pics or videos from the venue.

Might work...

I don't see any point in all in a second stream for that information when we could just put the info directly on the site instead and use next to zero bandwidth. And it would be even easier to automate.

Plans for this were already in progress, it's just one of many things we're working on.

I agree. For simple things it does not really need a stream necessarily.

However, I just had a silly idea.. The more the marathons grow, the more non-english-talking people we are going to have. mistermv (or however it's spelled) already does a french restream. Now, I have no idea how the restream actually looks (I don't speak french), but it could be made into a somewhat 'official' format, to stream the marathons in different languages. Attaching to that, there would also be the possibility to read donations in their respective language, thus lowering the workload on the english side.

The obvious downside to that would be, that those donation comments wouldn't have as much "direct impact" on the actual room, and I'm certain a lot of people like seeing their comment read and the runners reacting to it.

Just some food for thought... If you'd set up something like this though, I imagine it has to be much more sophisticated than "just a restream", as in - if it's "official SDA" instead there have to be standards to be met. (no offense intended to any restreamer, I absolutely appreciate what you are doing). This may be too ambitious for now, since there are plenty of other things to be worked on, that have to be sorted out before "expanding".

Mister_MV's stream is about as official as we can make it right now I think, and I'm not sure if he would want it integrated as part of SDA or not? Either way, we're pretty thin on resources as it is, so having official language offerings for SDA might be a bit of a way's out yet. We'll never say no to restreams for translations but it's hard to offer more than that right now on top of everything else we need to do. Smiley

The only purpose I can think of for having a second stream would be one dedicated to reading donations that get skipped in the main stream. Even then I'm finding it hard to justify an entire stream for that

I'm pretty sure if the next AGDQ grows even a little bit over 2013's, you'd need multiple streams. You could literally read donations 24/7 and not catch up.
Wiiaboo
Um. We didn't catch up. Last time we ended the marathon with 2-300 unread, and we skipped at least twice that many over the course of it. Tongue
@tiburonCS
Honestly, even if you made the second stream have a non-stop stream of donation reading, you probably wouldn't get through all of it.

My feelings on The Demon Rush
I've locked this thread because discussion is now in this thread. https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/speedrunner_roundtable_thoughts_and_reactions.html

Donations:

So let me see if my math is right.

AGDQ 2013 ran for about 155 hours.

155 hours * 60 minutes * 60 seconds = 558,000 seconds.

We had a little over 16000 donations. I just rounded down to 16000.

558,000 Seconds/16,000 donations = 34.875 seconds per donation.

You would have to read a donation every 35 seconds, without taking breaks for other commentary such as saying who we are, upcoming runs, and donation incentives. This also doesn't account for switching people in and out.

This also doesn't take into account that donation traffic is very uneven.

Even if there is no increase in donation traffic for AGDQ 2014 (which I highly doubt), having a stream dedicated to reading donations would not even be able to read out all of the donations. I also don't think it's a very good use of resources. I'm not opposed to having a second stream, but it has to be something that...

1.  Shows something that isn't on the main stream. (i.e. isn't redundant)

2.  People would really want to watch.
