I'm not sure if this belongs, but I saw the word issues under the topic so....

Okay I want to to a number of speed runs, I even wrote them all down, it came out to be like 40 games... The games mostly include Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Kirby, Sonic, etc. But it's like as soon as I start one its like I need to go to the next one! The problem is I can't even finishing it! I don'y want to be a quiter! Does anyone have any advice on how to overcome this so I can play and stick to one speed run before moving on to the next?  Undecided
Thread title:
This probably belongs in Gaming Discussion better than SDA discussion. It's strange that we don't have a general 'speedrunning discussion' board here; making 'Gaming Discussion' into 'Gaming and Speedrunning Discussion' might be a good idea.

Also congrats on the most generic thread title ever.

As for sticking with things, I'm not sure what to advise. Firstly you need to narrow down your list lots; a good speedrun will take months or years to make, nobody has 40 good runs in them. Then approach things with some structure; first plan your route, estimating times as you go, then start doing practice attempts and record them all, seeing what times you can get on different sections and how far you can get on each try. Review your recordings to give you motivation, and make a mental note of where your sticking points are and practice them until they become easy. Then just keep trying - how you motivate yourself to do that, I don't know.
Fucking Weeaboo
The other thing to consider is...is there a game you really like?  If so, is it speed runnable?  That's a good first target to go after.  I did that with Legend of Mana, so you can do it with whatever you want.  Because you already have played it and have good knowledge on it, it takes less time to get into a rhythm on "OK let's cream it".
Don't think!  feeeeeal
You have to think about the end result to a certain degree.  You have to really want there to be a finished product.  Your reason for speedrunning can't merely be for your own leisure/enjoyment.  You have to motivated by the end result as well.  If you aren't highly motivated this you'll likely do whatever ever seems the pleasurable at the time.  Making a good speedruns requires doing a lot of stuff you might not particularly enjoy as much as something else you could easily be doing.

It's all about the why.

if you get bored to the point where you can't continue a run, you should a) choose a different game or b) give up speed running. probably a is the better choice; you might find a game to run that doesn't annoy the crap out of you.

this is false; your reason can and will be whatever you want. i don't think you'll ever complete a run if you're not willing to put up with failing over and over and any frustration that may come with it. that's part of the reason i haven't done any runs over a minute and a half.
Waiting hurts my soul...
Speedrunning is like any other project you undertake.  Most likely, making attempts at a game will feel like work, which is why you've been suggested to pick something you like.  When you do work that you like, it feels less like work.

In all honousty I don't think you'll ever get a (good) speedrun if you only play the game because you like it. You have to have your mind set on wanting to speedrun it and doing it good rather then just play the game continuously because you like (and keep getting better at it).

Of course if you really like a game and keep playing it continuously it'll be a whole lot easier to actually speedrun it then starting from scratch (duh).
Ur-Quan. You're for dinner.
But if you like a game and decide to speedrun it, you're not necessarily just playing the game as you always did and being fast because you've gotten so good at it. If you only put effort into the bits of the game you like and brush over the parts that aren't fun for you, it will show up in the results, and people will quickly notice where you have become sloppy.

But if you're willing to put effort into all parts equally, then playing a game you enjoy and desire to see thoroughly destroyed will definitely be more fun than playing a game you don't really care for.

Your attitude and approach to speedrunning is what is paramount.

I'm not sure if you want to break records, though. From what you're saying, I get the impression that say, for a Mario speedrun, you don't want to beat the current record, but mimic the run so you can say "I can beat Mario Bros in 7 minutes!" even though the record is much cleaner and faster. There's nothing wrong with that, but unless you beat the standing record you won't get it on here.

Speedrun one game until you beat the current SDA speedrun. Then move to the next one. Rinse and repeat Wink

Actually, I have the same problem honestly. I have about 40 games I want to speedrun (and probably will end up speedrunning that many). Stick with one game, if you get tired of it real quickly, you probably shouldn't be speedrunning it. Either that or just practice until it's fun because it's easier for you.
