Metropolis doesn't really help me, as it saves time but looks impossible to pull off.
The huge (10-15 seconds?) shortcut near the start of Metropolis 3 is very easy to pull off in real-time with a little practice. All you have to do is stand still on the right side under the crusher and jump within a 7-frame window (probably more leeway than you get on a lot of the other tricks), and you'll fall straight down into that spinning cage.
If you jump a little too late (missing that 7-frame window by 1 or 2 frames), you'll get stuck in the floor instead of getting crushed and you can hold left to zip right and try to salvage the run.

The shortcut in hill top 1 might be possible in real play, but i'd doubt they allow it. I'm going to test out the shortcut in mystic caves 1 as well.
Compared to some other stuff I've seen on SDA I think it should be allowed; it's a short amount of time and doesn't technically leave the level. There's a video of it on the Sonic Center showing how it will probably happen in real-time play, although you have to be kind of lucky to get those results.

And I never thought about getting 3 hits in that way at the beginning on death egg (not that sitting in robotniks sprite is easy to pull off without dying).
I wouldn't bother with that one; it's one of the most impossible tricks in that run, maybe harder than the Oil Ocean 2 trick...
awesome help ninsuja, is there any way you can give the button input for the hill top trick? I still can't get the metropolis trick, but if I have 7 frames of leeway i'll for sure get it.
Probably won't put the hill top trick in the ss, as that looks to be only an individual level run type trick. And I am really just trying to figure out how to get 12 hits on death egg, i figured it was impossible, but If I could get 12 hits just one time on record.... oh man would i be happy.
What you do is stand all the way on the right side of the platform when it's falling, then press and hold left when the screen looks like somewhere between points A and B (that happens to also be a 7-frame window), and you'll get result 1, which is almost the best you can hope for in real-time, although you have a 3-frame window after the screen starts scrolling right (when the lava is filling as much of the screen as possible) where if you let go of left then, you'll go a little further, up to where the spring would put you. Going even further like in the TAS requires either impossibly exact timing or incredible luck at mashing random directions.
If you start holding left between points B and C instead (11-frame window after point B), you'll get result 2, which is OK but not as good and if that happens you have to start holding right again before Sonic appears out the bottom or you'll fall into the lava.
If you start holding left after point C, you'll fall off the screen and die. If you didn't hit left too late but you still die in either of the first two pits of lava, that means you didn't wait long enough before taking damage before getting on the falling platform.

I forgot to say, you have to time the press so that the crusher is already moving downward when Sonic starts going up from the jump. It's easy to jump too early because you don't want it to crush you, but it's better to make yourself jump later than you'd think. The absolute earliest that you can start jumping is only 0.15 seconds before Sonic would get crushed. Make sure not to hold either left or right during the jump or that makes it harder.
The metro 3 trick was really easy, and I got a 1:51 using it, a good 21 seconds faster than my previous record. I still can't get the hill top trick... any other tips for this?
I'm probably going to leave the hill top trick out unless I find that its just as easy to do as the metropolis one.

Well what happens when you try to do it? Are you falling off the screen and dying, or not even going through the lava in the first place, or what? My success rate at taking the basic shortcut is basically 100%, since it's about a 45 frame window where you have to start pressing left, so I don't see how you could possibly have trouble with that. Even in a SS run it's worth doing. If I wait and try for one of the other 2 better shortcuts I have maybe a 40% chance of getting one or the other, but I've never really practiced it.
The process is: - Stop on the moving platform when it's near the top. - Hold Right until you take damage on the lava. - Hold Left sometime in the next few seconds after it falls down through you. Different things will happen depend on when you press it.
Yea, i was an idiot and figured it out immediately when i rewatched the tas... didn't realize i actually needed the platform ..... it is easy as fuck.
got a 43 in hill top 1 with it, so now i have a bunch of runs i need to send in. Idk if i should just wait and see if i can get a ss in first though...
your call. whenever you send that last stuff in then i'll proceed to update the table. just it's a lot of work screwing with archive so i've been holding out for you to settle on some times. ss would be done separately obviously.
Well, if its at all possible, just post the runs for all the levels i've sent except for metro 3, hill top 1, and chem plant 2, as I'm just going to try and save on shipping by sending in a bundle. However, I honestly don't expect a good ss to come out for another few weeks, as its going to take a really good run for me to accept it. Plus, I really really want to see my runs actually on the site, as I've told my friends about them and they don't believe I've actually gotten some of the times I have (except for the levels I still have with me and have shown).
haha, i was lucky i didn't learn about that until after i submitted my times.
keep it up. i'll try to get your i-l stuff posted this weekend, but no promises, because things are starting to get really scary schoolwise. i can promise you that i will make the effort, though.
Sure, its easy as hell to use the second controller. I can do both at one time and achieve it every time.
However, without doing that, I have to run tails into the first enemy on screen to get it to work every time. Running a computer controlled character based off of your movements into an enemy efficiently without getting hit yourself is pretty hard, I get it 40% of the time.
And for the second time sandbag, nin did a run at a hugely slow speed. The jumps required in the run are a completely different skill set than those required to do a tas. The run with tails will be done before the end of october, and in all actuality, I could consider the run done and just create dissapointment over only beating the run without tails by 3 minutes. I think beating it by 4 minutes would be much more impressive and worth the wait to get that perfect run.
Ninsuja, if you read this, can you explain the oil ocean 2 glitch? I've tried it on an emulator with slow down using every button combination i can think of and still can't get it to work.

At least Tails doesn't have much of an AI controlling him, so there's no randomness to deal with.

You found a reliable way to actually get all the way out there to the edge? Well once you're at the edge the trick is: - Cross the edge of the oil while you are under the oil. If you jump over the edge you'll fall down and die. - Cross the edge while traveling at a high speed. That means either spindash or use the "blue supersonic" bug. (The trick is a lot easier to do after that bug, for more than one reason.) - After you cross, mash the jump buttons like mad. If you don't do it soon enough you'll hit the bottom and die, like normal. - After the screen scrolls up a bit, you will still be too far left to survive going any higher unless you were going really fast when you crossed the edge. So you'll have to stop in the oil when you think you're near the top of the screen and spindash to the right, then keep jumping.
It's hard to explain in more detail than that, try listening to the TAS maybe? You can't see what's going on so it's really easy to "randomly" die when trying to do this.
Yep, I can get there just by using the same method as in oil ocean 1, just going as far as possible and i only have to spindash under 2 pillars. I've gotten the glitch with slowdown... dunno if its possible in real time yet.
Also want to publicly thank nate for his work in getting the runs up... They look great!
