I think I'm gonna start seriously working on this now since as it turns out Skyward Sword is boring as hell and I need to run SOMETHING. Anyway, I did a couple practice attempts yesterday. Both clocked in around 1:40 and both were awful. I'm guessing a good run would have at least 20 minutes of improvements, if not more.

Route-wise I have everything mostly worked out. Might shuffle a couple levels around and change a couple challenges, but for the most part I have all the fastest challenges. I'm not really sure what to say without going overboard into detail. I might change the Green Hill challenge (currently doing the Knuckles race since I'm the most familiar with it at the moment).

Hrrm... here's the things that are bugging me a bit at the moment.

Metal Sonic: Mostly, I'm just not sure what kind of time I should be aiming for. Optimally you get around :30, but there's tricks on the third and fourth hits that don't work a lot of the time, so you can end up with a time as high as :50 if you get unlucky.

Speed Highway Modern: I'm really conflicted here. There's a glitch that skips well over half the level and saves about 20-30 seconds, and it's really awesome so I really want to do it. However it's also random as hell and rarely ever works, especially without skills, so I can easily end up losing well over 20-30 seconds on it. :/

Seaside Hill Modern: I really really hate TAing this stage without Endless Boost. :/ I'm gonna have to figure out a consistent route where I'm not really in too much danger of running out of boost at all the wrong times.

Planet Wisp Modern: There's a big glitch here called the rocket glitch (or at least, that's what I call it), where if you pick up a rocket while you're already using rocket, you can pick up a spare and use it somewhere you aren't supposed to. Doing this you can actually take a rocket out of the 2D section and use it right before the last 2D area and skip like 30-40 seconds of stuff. It's easy to fuck up though. Best case is screwing it up early on so I can just keep going and do the last 2D area normally (you can still skip a fair amount of stuff with the glitch that way, so it's not TOO big of a loss). Worst case is I actually get stuck inside the wall and have to reset, which would cost two minutes. I've only had that happen once though, and for the most part if you mess it up you can just change strats and keep going, so I'm probably going to at least attempt the 3D rocket.

Egg Dragoon: I usually get like 2:15 fairly consistently here; the TSC record's around 1:40 though, using a series of hits that have a really small window. I might need to practice and see if I can do it consistently at all, but when I tried before it definitely wasn't.

I'll probably do some more attempts later today, hopefully I can get something a bit lower.

how long do you estimate the run to be? Depends on whether you want to preserve sanity or not; I'd say don't go for the big glitch in speed highway (i've seen it), it's far too risky and not that much worth the reward if you can only rarely get it.

I've never actually played the game, but I really enjoy watching speed runs (including yours) of it! Good luck with planning!!!! Smiley

I just got the game, and I've been playing it at a friend's house for a while. I'll try to help with this, if I can even get decent at the game.
just did a third ~1:40 run <_< I lost like 10 minutes on Speed Highway alone so yeah. good run should definitely be sub-1:20.
Awesome. I've been hoping you'd do this run.

One question, though. Are you taking skills into account when planning your route? What I'm thinking is that you can spend a bit of time to get and equip some skills, but that time will be regained through using them over the course of the run. No?
Yeah, I get Thunder Shield, none of the other ones are really worth it though imo. The only other one I'd want is Acceleration, and that's definitely not worth it since it would require playing GH2 a second time.
Ganondorf = Donkey Kong LOOK IT UP!!
Wait, you aren't worried about that batshit Power Plant modern skip? Are you even going to try to do that, because I know that platform is a bitch to land on =[

No, I'm not doing that, as far as I know it requires Acceleration. Not to mention it's a bitch anyway. Definitely not SS material even if it was doable.

edit: Just did a 1:28 run. Still shit.

Sonic speedrunner
Now that I'm finished up on Sonic Advance. I have decided to try to get a good Single Segment run on Sonic Generations and give Parax some competition. Was thinking about it for a while and I think I can pull of a decent run. Only trouble is that I have a ps3 and loading times are horrendous. But that doesn't matter too much for now. Going to plan most of the run now and will aim for sub 1:15 or sub 1:10 depending on what happens.
^ I actually just upgraded my PC the other day and apparently couldn't have both my graphics card and capture card in at the same time... so now I'm out a way to record/stream. <.< So I prolly won't be doing much with this til I can figure out another way to record and feel up for spending the money for it. :/ Good luck with your attempts.
Sonic speedrunner
Aw that's a shame. Hope you get back into it soon. Smiley

Just did my first timed run of 1:35. Most of it was bad, mainly just to get a practice of what the run would entail. Without the bad ps3 loading times it might've been around 1:30. I can see sub 1:20 being easily obtained on a decent run.
Hey Guys

Just made a single segment sub 1:20 run, and there is still room for improvement (about 4-5 minutes I'd say)

I was not so sure if it was worth uploading, but well sounds like some of you consider this as a decent result, so I'm considering sending it. There is nothing on the site so far anyway, so it'd be a beginning ^^
Request is sent!

The run needs verifiers, so if you guys have some free time, your help would be much appreciated Cheesy
There may be a couple of things that you didn't think about in it, so it would also be a good source of information for you Smiley

Thanks in advance

Sub 1:20 was just an estimate honestly, I personally haven't run it enough to have a good idea of what a good time would be. (Still practicing individual stages to decide on target times) What times did you get?
Ok. Well in my opinion 1:20 is alright, sub 1:17 run would be very good, and sub 1:15 would be excellent.

I got 1:19:35 from title screen to the end of credits. I estimated the active playtime (without loadings and such) around 1:06 / 1:07. Btw I ran it on PC.
Definitely not the best you can do and it's largely improvable, but I want to share it to have some opinions about the routes (especially the challenges chosen).

I'll pm you the comments of the run, it's a pretty long one but it's quite clear, you'll find times easily.

Mkay, skimmed through them. The run does not sound very good to be honest, no offense. Your times for the first four levels sound alright, but most of the rest have way too much room for improvement. Losing 3+ minutes on Time Eater alone would make the run reject-worthy imo. Not to mention you lost well over a minute on PW1, 2, Dragoon, a significant amount of time on Shadow, DER, SeH1, and more room for improvement on nearly every other level...

Also, no skills wouldn't be a valid category for SDA. Speed glitch I could see a case being made for, since you're playing on PC which can't do it for some reason (though it is possible, from what I've heard - just harder).

As for challenges I can't really comment on your times on them as most of them are different from the ones I'm doing and I don't remember what's optimal on most of the ones you did. But for the record, I'm doing these ones:

-Green Hill 1 Challenge 3 (likely not going to use this one for a real run, I'm just the most familiar with this atm)
-Chemical Plant 1 Challenge 5 (~:30-40)
-Sky Sanctuary 2 Challenge 3 (can be done in ~:15, but ~:30 isn't too hard)
-Speed Highway 2 Challenge 4 (optimally under 30 seconds)
-City Escape 1 Challenge 2 (~:40, plus unlocks thunder shield)
-Seaside Hill 2 Challenge 5 (~:20)
-Crisis City 1 Challenge 4 (~:40)
-Rooftop Run 2 Challenge 1 (~:30)
-Planet Wisp 1 Challenge 4 (should be sub 10 seconds)

Also for the record, Time Eater is really really easy to get around 1:30-1:40 consistently. Boost straight ahead for hit 1, stop boosting until he switches then stick to the top for hit 2, then glitch hit 3. (The glitch is really really easy too. Just switch back to 3D right before the screen flashes white.)

Soo yeah. :/

Ye you are right, the run isn't good enough yet, and I'm fine if it gets rejected since I obtained this result after less than ten tries. I wanted other runners like you to give their opinion, and I'm really thankful for your help. I really needed some comparaison to know how good - how bad it was.

For the challenges :

- GH1 Challenge 3 : youtube.com/watch?v=VrNN8cGNpl0 (~40s)
I think the one I do (GH1 C2) is better to use (~30s)

- CP1 C5 : you are probably right, this invicibility challenge is faster, but I was more familiar with another
youtube.com/watch?v=fEIR8jXQaOk (~30s)

- SS2 C3 : I'll have a look on that one. Found a 24:07
  youtube.com/watch?v=105th6cKzQ8

- SH2 C4 : Agreed

- CE1 C2 : didn't know it could be done so fast, I'll have a look

- SH2 C5 : Ye, I need to figure out how to take this route consistently
youtube.com/watch?v=DmEFFZFTFTg&feature=related

- CC1 C4 : I'm around 45s atm, will see if I can hit 40

- RR2 C1 : well I wouldn't use this one, imo Endless boost is far easier, and there is few time difference (~33s). will have a look tho

- PW1 C4 : I don't think you can make it sub 10s. I've made it in 15s and it's barely improvable. (I'm talking about actual time here, not taking time bonus into account)

Thanks for the tips on Time Eater. I knew about the first two hits, but that third hit, I didn't know how to get it.
If you wanna see how I get CH1 C3 done, I can upload something!

I've gotten 0:00.00 on PW1-4 in SS attempts by accident before, only picking up two timers, so yeah, sub 10 is easily doable.  The record on SS2-3 is 16 seconds, video here. You might be right about the Rooftop Run one, never tried that one but I'd wager it's definitely easier.

Also have you checked out TSC?
Mhhh you may have forgotten one timer! :p I'll have a look
That SS2-3 trick is awesome! Will see if it's easy enough.

I didn't know that website, sounds great! That deserves some reading

Kay, so. I've been practicing all the stages in the run and coming up with target times. I think this is what I'm deciding on:

Green Hill 1: 0:42.xx
Green Hill 2: 1:44.xx
Chemical Plant 1: 0:54.xx
Chemical Plant 2: 1:47.xx
Sky Sanctuary 1: 1:09.xx
Sky Sanctuary 2: 1:39.xx
Metal Sonic: 0:37.xx
Death Egg Robot: 0:35.xx
Speed Highway 1: 1:25.xx
Speed Highway 2: 1:25.xx
City Escape 1: 1:09.xx
City Escape 2: 2:14.xx
Seaside Hill 1: 1:35.xx
Seaside Hill 2: 1:40.xx
Shadow: 1:05.xx
Perfect Chaos: 1:30.xx
Crisis City 1: 1:26.xx
Crisis City 2: 1:50.xx
Rooftop Run 1: 2:05.xx
Rooftop Run 2: 2:17.xx
Planet Wisp 1: 1:54.xx
Planet Wisp 2: 2:39.xx
Silver: 1:26.xx
Egg Dragoon: Shaft during 2D section
Time Eater: 1:40.xx

Green Hill 1-2: 0:35.xx (disregarding timers)
Chemical Plant 1-5: 0:39.xx
Sky Sanctuary 2-3: 0:29.xx
Speed Highway 2-4: 0:27.xx
City Escape 1-2: 0:50.xx
Seaside Hill 2-5: 0:28.xx
Crisis City 1-4: 0:42.xx
Rooftop Run 2-4: 0:35.xx
Planet Wisp 1-4: 0:09.xx (disregarding timers)

Since this is a very fast game with a lot of precise tricks, some of which save huge amounts of time and therefore cost huge amounts of time if they go wrong, I'm not sure how feasible it is to meet every one of these targets :/ But a good run should meet most of them, if not all.

Also I've ordered a recording device which should get here later this week.

Also, Egg Dragoon doesn't have a specific target time because the time on him can fluctuate wildly. Sometimes you can hit him right at the start of the shaft section, and get three hits in there which lets you kill him immediately. It barely ever happens though, so if I don't randomly get that then I have to go back into the 3D section to get the last hit which costs quite a lot of time.
Ganondorf = Donkey Kong LOOK IT UP!!
One of these goal times I would contest is PW1, if you learn the skip sub-2 is possible quite consistently, and if you have Elec shield it's even more of a walk in the park. 0:42 for CP1-5 is a little generous, maybe something like 0:37 would be better, hell, maybe even 0:35. I'd say drop SS2-3 a few seconds but I know that challenge can be a bitch to get consistent.

Other than that, seems like a sold list of goal times. Smiley

I've actually never tried the skip lol, it seems like a bitch. Guess I'll give it a go later today. And yeah, 0:42 is a bit generous for CP1-5, but I usually get around 0:40 at the worst. I'd be fine with a 0:40 or better in an SS attempt. Anything lower than 0:37 requires to get that random giant bounce off the spike platform that I can't exactly rely on for an SS.

SS2-3 would be just about impossible to optimize for a run. That said I usually do get lower than 0:30 (typically under 25). This is just a list of times I would find acceptable really, so for example if I had a bit of trouble on SS2-3 and lost a few seconds... I'd still be fine with it if it's under 30.

edit: Oh and I just saw this video DsS uploaded the other day. Might have to change the Crisis City challenge <_<

edit 2: Think I'm gonna stick with CC1-4. I gave 2-3 a go and found it to be not very easy.

edit 3: Ok I'm definitely changing my PW1 goal to sub-2.
Could you tell us in which levels you use map glitches and/or speed glitch?

Times that I would lower are
- CP2 : 1:42 is easily doable by taking the shortcut at the beginning. You seem to take a lot of risks on some levels (SeH2 especially) so why not on this one aswell?
- RR2 : 2:17? I'm pretty sure that you can do it in 2:12ish easily man.
The rest, I'm just too bad to say. But you made the right decision changing those GH and RR challenges Smiley

It will be hard to meet these requirements I think. Game is tiring as fuck to speedrun!
If I count right this would lead to a playing time around 1:05. Honnestly, sub 1:10 would already be a very very good result which would deserve an upload and some pop corn watching!

Let us know about how fast you improve your times!

I do do that shortcut in CP2. I dunno what route you're taking but I get like 1:42-1:43 on a very good run. RR2 I'm being a little lenient on.

Just did a 1:17 run... had some nasty mistakes in it :s Getting better, at least. PVR's here, I can start recording runs, yay.

where do I use glitches? too many levels to list. Almost anywhere they help and are consistent enough.
Ok, I wanted to know how often speed glitch could be used.

Just so you know : admins have said that the fact speed glitch is easier on consoles than on PC is not enough to make separate categories.
