Hi, i'm kinda new to this site, but i've been checking out some of the runs for a while now and decided yo join up. My best game for running is atm SA2:B and i think i am pretty gd at it. You can check out my runs on my youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/talon2461. I've seen Petrie911's run and thought that i could take it down lower. So for the last week i've been working on some par times for me but i still need some help with some other stuff and this seems like a good place to go.
Thread title:
Its not as good as here...

http://www.soniccenter.org/

Check for videos, guides and IL times.  Though keep in mind all the runs there have all the upgrades unlocked.

Good luck with the run.

Thanks. I'm hoping to get it done in the may break which seems to be enough time to plan and so forth. The hunting stages are by far the hardest and right now i'm memorizing every hint to where the treasure goes

My times are pretty high up on the boards over there, but i think i'll stick to SDA since it's a lot simpler for me.

Right now i've got Iron gate, Dry lagoon, Radical highway and Egg quarters pretty tight. Sand ocean is annoying me atm

EDIT: I've worked out my par times but am slightly stuck on a few stages

Iron Gate            2:10:00
Hot Shot            0:25:00
Dry lagoon          0:55:00
Sand Ocean        2:35:00
Radical Highway  1:55:00
Egg Quarters      1:15:00
Lost colony        2:35:00
Weapons bed      1:40:00
Tails 1              0:15:00
Security hall      1:00:00
Flying dog          0:50:00
White jungle      1:45:00
Sonic 1            0:18:00
Route 280        2:50:00
Sky rail            0:45:00
Egg golem        0:25:00
Mad space        2:00:00
Knuckles          0:20:00
Cosmic wall      5:00:00
Tails 2              0:25:00
Final chase        3:10:00
Sonic 2            0:50:00

Overall          33:18:00

I might try to get this to sub 33 but it'll be hard. Sand ocean i can't seem to get to the moving platforms in the proper place right before the blue speed ramp
For justice.
I noticed in one of your runs that you seemed to have a full stock of one particular animal, suggesting you made multiple attempts on the level (Sky Rail.) In single segment, you have to hammer off pars (if not, almost par) your first time through a particular level, otherwise the attempt is bust. Keep that in mind.

Also, I should point out you'll need a proper means of recording. I'm okay with watching a camera aimed at a screen, but I doubt anyone else is. Verifiers included.

This is true. However much I'd love any speedrun of this game, you need good quality recording to get on this site.
Sonic speedrunner
Dnt worry bout the camera at the screen. I just got a dazzleDVC130 and am going to try it out soon, maybe just some random fun runs like No A button presses and such just to see how it would work out.

I know that restarting will just add more time to SS runs. but those runs were just getting the lowest time. I am pretty consistent with most stages getting those par times in one life (apart from sand ocean).

Right now i am memorizing Security Hall clues which is a huge pain at the start. I hope that once i've finished many people will enjoy it
Awesome, I use a Dazzle too and it works great and is easy to use, plus it's a lot cheaper than a DVD recorder. Can't wait for this.

I might tape a warm up run with the dazzle From Iron gate to egg quarters so i can see the quality that it will be.

Right now i can get Iron gate through to Egg quarters all under par time almost every single run though here are some tough points

Radical highway rails near the mystic melody screw me over so much, i keep missing them
Sand ocean moving platforms near the blue speed ramps are never in the right place
Dry lagoon sticks me with oasis jail around 20% of the time (nothing i can do about it)

those are the main 3, anyone can help me with them i'll be glad

Right now Security hall is giving me hell, the 1st clues are getting me nowhere what so ever and i can hardly ever get a sub minute run, they're also sticking me with safes that i havent activated yet.

EDIT: So far this is my best run with a new file

Iron gate 2:07:14
Hot shot  0:23:77
Dry lagoon 0:30:97
Sand Ocean 2:35:77
Radical highway 1:55:19
Egg quarters 0:56:30

Sand ocean and radical highway were a bit slow, but Dry lagoon i got seriously lucky on because i saw an emerald that wasn't on the radar and saved me a hell of a lot of time. Egg quarters had a decent placement but it was executed pretty well. Hot shot was the same as usual.

What d'you guys think, d'you think i can get the record

Oh, that takes me back.  20% of the time is about right, and yeah, those rails suck.  Sand Ocean I might be able to help you with, though.  You'll notice that my time is about :10 faster than yours.  You are remembering to get the speed shoes at the second check, right?  Perhaps you could upload a video of your sand ocean strat.

Iron Gate looks good
I prefer a sub-:23 Hot Shot, but it's a fraction of a second so who cares
Nice Dry Lagoon (I've gotten 30:85 with an early emerald pickup)
Sand Ocean, as mentioned, could use work.
Radical Highway I was never very good with.  Your time seems pretty good.
EggQuarters has a very nice time.  Heck, I considered my 59.79 to be quite good, but maybe my copy of SA2B just hates me (or maybe I just suck)

Overall, yeah, I think you could beat the record.  Hell, just pulling of SM's Cosmic Wall trick shaves a minute off your time.

Ahh the current record holder, thanks for checking out the topic.

So i thought about it when i saw your post and i might try a run up to security hall with the dazzle so i could show you the strat for Sand Ocean, My time actually beats yours if i get a good run up to the Speed shoe checkpoint (I can consistently get it at 1:10) but from there i can't seem to get anything right after that, if i can get that, i can shave around 13 seconds of the time and aim for sub 33 - sub 32.

Ahh nothing i can do about the rails eh, nvm i make do with wat i can, the oasis jail gets on my nerves and i have to restart the whole run every single time when that happens. Radical highway was pretty slow for me seeing as though i can get a sub 1:55 pretty easily, but i was very cautious with the rails cause of the Dry lagoon time. Egg quarters is a bit tricky, but if you memorized the clues correctly it's not that much of a bother, i might be able to sub 50, but if i get a bad placement then it's all over

The cosmic wall trick is pretty much impossible for me no matter how many lives it takes me and since it's near the end it could really screw up a good run, but if i get it consistently then i'll try it out

So i'll try and tape a sand ocean run at least by today or tomorrow

Under no circumstances are you ever allowed to say that Tongue
For Cosmic Wall, a while ago I tried to explain the hover-through-the-ceiling trick to another SA2 player.  If you can't get the trick to work at all, then this might help a bit.  My comment about the inconsistency stands, though - I wonder if there's a better way.

"As you can see in SM's video and my video, you jump and hover against the ceiling, and then move forward-right to get to the place with the fake ceiling.  If the jump and hover was done in the right place, and if you try to move around, you may notice that you move in the direction opposite that you're holding the control stick.  So try holding back-left in order to move forward-right.  I just hold the control stick lightly, if that helps.  Once you start hovering through the ceiling, your movement will be normal again.

The trick is still inconsistent - often, I end up getting stuck in the laser barrier.  In this case, I have to stop hovering and fall down.  Most of the time this means I have to start the rail ride.  Sometimes, though, I am actually able to pass through the laser barrier and start hovering outside.  This is another way that you can skip the rail ride, but it might be a little slower."

I would probably try to include the Cosmic Wall trick if I were doing the run (it does save about 40 seconds), but if you decide not to then I can understand that.  It may be inconsistent and it's so near the end, and there's a lot of other things going on in an SA2 run, including hunting level luck - so even 40 seconds may not seem like a huge amount.  Though, interesting to note that blazest decided to use the shortcut in his (unsubmitted) Dark story run.  I wonder if it's consistent for him.

Anyway, whatever you decide, good luck with the run!  Definitely looking forward to it. Smiley

Thanks yoshifan. I managed a 4:05:30 with that strat, took me a little time to get the breakout but with practice i should get it consistently.

Blazest's Dark run looks pretty gd at 31:50 but the deaths should add more time if he submitted it which is probs why he didn't. I'll try to beat that now that i could aim for sub 4:30 cosmic wall, i should definetely get under 32 on a good run, thanks for helping me Smiley

I was wondering why you never did a dark story run yourself seeing as though your hero run looks pretty solid.

EDIT: I can now do it consistently, though sometimes it may take a while. I managed a 3:55:95 with a 1:06 check. I should start videoing soon, just need to learn Mad space's clues of by heart.

BTW, watch out with Mad Space.  There's at least one set of clues that actually leads nowhere.

Also, if you can, try to memorize where things are on the ring of platforms near the bottom and in the space above the Holy Planet.

I noticed that but i don't know where the actual emerald was so i spent 5 minutes flying everywhere but nothing came up.

I wanted to ask with security hall, if you got a emerald that was in a safe where you needed to flip a switch to activate them, would you restart the run or keep going?

EDIT: Just made some new par times

Iron gate - 2:10:00
Hot shot - 0:24:00
Dry lagoon - 0:50:00
Sand ocean - 2:35:00
Radical highway - 1:55:00
Egg Quarters - 1:00:00
Lost colony - 2:35:00

Sky rail - 0:45:00
Egg golem - 0:25:00
Mad space - 1:45:00

Cosmic wall - 4:00:00
Tails 2 - 0:20:00
Final chase - 3:10:00
Sonic 2 - 0:45:00

Overall - 31:25:00

if anyone feels like they can get lower on these times just post here. (I am filming sand ocean atm )

IIRC, the emerald is on the Holy Planet, on top of that machine thing that moves around the planet.

As for Security Hall, it really depended.  I'd usually finish out the level to see what time I got, but if it ended up particularly bad, I'd restart.

Those look like pretty good par times.  I've had Mad Space go sub-1:15 (6:25 here), but I wouldn't expect that every time.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
The hints that lead nowhere occur whenever a moving piece is selected for piece 3. Specifically, all three hints for moving pieces have reversed letters, instead of the second and third being reversed meaning, and the strings that get reversed are taken from the first hints of other pieces that aren't properly reversed (and in some cases, the piece that would have had that hint was excised during testing). For your convenience, I have a list of all the hints in question:

"esab eht ta sreniatnoc kcalb fo hcnub a" -  This is followed by "dees kcor gninrub" and "deggel eerht htiw senihcam eht neewteb ni", and the piece will be up at the ARK, moving along the face of the blue container balcony. Note that "A bunch of black containers at the base", non-reversed, is a hint for a different piece 3 which is actually where it says it is (a novel concept!)

"ynoclab reniatnoc kcalb" - followed by "ynoclab reniatnoc eulb" and "reniatnoc deroloc eerht" - this appears to be the one petrie was thinking of, riding the cart on the holy planet.

"diuqil live" - As far as anyone can tell, this piece can't actually come up in SA2B, but I mapped it on Dreamcast and it exists there. The other hints also talk about enemies ("retarc eht ni erutaerc diuqil" and "dnats eulb eht no ymene eulb eht"), which can never hold a piece 3, and it turns out this piece actually moves in a circle just beneath the start. A shame, as it introduces a difference GC can't possibly overcome in an IL run.

"kcik wercs kciuq" - followed by "namhctaw elissim" and "ynoclab wolley eht fo namhctaw". You actually want to go to the three colored containers for this one, where it's moving along the back side of the central container.

"reniatnoc deroloc eerht" - needless to say, it's not actually there. This one's riding another cart, this time on the spherical planet. The other hints are "sdap gnihcnual elissim eerht" and "ynoclab thgil der eht morf reniatnoc kcalb nellaf eht".

"mroftalp wolley yrev" - Another tricky one, as you can get "Very yellow platform" for piece 3 and it leads you where you might expect. This one has "etiroetem eht fo mottob eht" and "aera lortnoc fo tou eht ni mroftalp eht" to follow it up, and they even misspelled the last hint. Anyway, this is in the same area as the "kcik wercs kciuq" piece, but instead of the back side of the container, it's moving on the front side.

"ynoclab thgil wolley" - At least this one gets you to go to the top. But then you get "gninepo na tuohtiw reniatnoc eht" and "erauqs der" which don't make sense for a balcony, and it turns out it's actually moving on the black container balcony.

There's one more that you'll want to be careful of, even though only the first hint is abnormal and it's not actually a moving piece:
"reniatnoc egarots eht stcetorp taht enihcam eht" (another reference to an enemy). This one's followed by "A low place" and "Not under a black container above a platform with a red light tower", which at least lead you somewhat in the right place as long as you remember to forget the first hint, but it's still about the most difficult piece in this or any other level to get to uninitiated. What you have to do for this piece is go up to the red light balcony, glide away, and the piece will be floating among all the black boxes up there (assuming you haven't abandoned the run for taking too long on the level).

My best run so far, but i am having some trouble with recording
My DazzleDVC130 seems to lag when i put it on enough to screw up a run, and same with the DVD recorder (by a lot more than the dazzle) is there anyway to get rid of this lag?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
There is a way you can completely eradicate lag using a DVD recorder, but you'll need a double-ended SCART lead, a compatible console, a DVD recorder with a SCART port and a TV with two. In short, it's not exactly feasible unless you're in SCART territory.

Connect the SCART port (SCART In if it has two) on the DVD recorder to the SCART Out port on the TV. Connect the console to the SCART In port on the TV. If the DVD recorder doesn't have a frontal display, you might need to connect it to the TV normally first to configure it for SCART recording.

If you leave a second or two at either end of the recording to compensate for the lag, you should be able to record the whole thing without any lag.

Huh, unless I'm mistaken, that totals to 30:54.10.  That's pretty damn good.
Sonic speedrunner
Yep 30:54:10 ;D. and the run felt kinda slow in some parts such as sky rail i screwed up immensly and mad space was also slow on the 2nd piece. but some parts were gr8 such as egg quarters had a nice placement which suited the path for the digging tool and cosmic wall went gr8 as well 9 (considering it's near the end of the run). Sub 30 looks very far away, but sub 31 is my target for recording.

As for the recording run, i have a TV that was 2 scart sockets which should solve all my problems, trouble is, that it's downstairs in the living room and i can't exactly take it upstairs or bring the DVD recorder downstairs.

As for the S-Video cable, i don't have one but i think i can get one.

So it shall take time for a video to be up (that i can play on properly) I shall try with the dazzle, but when i use that another stupid thing happens, there's some weird doubleA-tap thing where if u press A once, it presses twice instead which can get annoying.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I think that's a glitch in 50hz mode where, thanks to the slower gameplay, the game can interpret a button press as being two quick jabs.
Sonic speedrunner
Really? I never knew that that was the cause, but i can't seem to record in 60Hz though for some reason.

I'll change it back to 60Hz then it should go away

Oh and i need to know if you pause in the run, does the time that is spent pausing add on to the game time?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
It depends. If the run is being timed by the game timer pause screens might be timed manually.
With most DVD recorders and capture cards you have to change the video mode in their settings (in this case from PAL to NTSC) to get it to record.
