I have only one thing to say.

"Damn, not here!"

I went into town today, got my haircut, and went down to the two video stores there. Neither of them had SMC, and they didn't even stock any Cube games, so the renting option is out the window.

That means I'll have to buy it... and nobody better to buy it off than somebody from here. Who's willing to sell (and lives in the PAL region)?

Can you do Ebay?

Those are the only two that I found in Australia. There are more in Europe, but I'm sure the shipping costs would be pretty high.

I have an idea.

Check you PM inbox, Mike.

There remains one chance for the runs to be done these holidays.

I'm meeting up with "the gang" on Friday to basically kick back and play games all day. If one of them has SMC, I'll get them to bring it. I've sent the email out, and I should know tomorrow if I'll get it Friday.

For now, I'll try and record a no-deaths Vectorman 2, which seems far easier said than done at the moment.

TIME FOR A REVIVAL!

While I am still unable to record for the purposes of SDA, I am able to tease you even further by giving you an idea of what to expect (really, this time):

AI1: 59
AI2: 1:44 (lost my water shield, lawl)
HC1: 1:15 (missed a key platform twice by not concentrating, but the boss made up for it)
HC2: 2:06
MG1: 1:35
MG2: 2:46
CN1: 55
CN2: 2:57
IC1: 2:19
IC2: 1:14
LB1: 2:57
LB2: 2:22
MH1: 1:17
MH2: 1:36
FB1: 2:48 (including my only death, costing 23 seconds)
FB2: 3:48
SO1: 3:23
SO2: 3:48 (what is it with me and this boss fight??)
LR1: 2:50
LR2: 4:03
HP: 34
SS: 1:21
DE1: 2:28
DE2: 4:19
TOTAL: 53:18

I feel really bad about keeping you guys thinking I'd do something pretty much all year... but I'm sending you a teaser in Banjo-Tooie and Vectorman 2. But just remember, when you're watching those... you ain't seen nothing yet.

Is this Sonic w/Tails or Sonic alone?  Lose the death and you should be in buisness.

Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
I was going to start posting in here about my interest in doing a 100% SS of S3&K, but I didn't know about Mike89 doing a min% SS.

Point is, my current state, I am in no condition to speedrun the game. There are a few TAS things I could wow with, like getting into the Knuckles-only boss for Marble Garden Act 2, but my game is still unpolished.

Plus I need to reanalyze the TAS to see what I can match with as Super and Hyper Sonic.

But since Gex 2 has caught my interest more than this at the moment, I think it's better I wait to see Mike89's run first, then come back to try this again. Wink

Lookin' forward to it Mike!
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
this question is purely out of curiosity, but, i just saw a speed run of sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles. and a part that i remember seeing a long time ago wasnt there. which sonic is it where you battle metal sonic when he uses the chaos emerald to power himself up?

I talked with TG a long time ago about doing this run; after awhile I got tired of playing this game. After reading this thread I think I am going to take on your soon to be record.
Can I ask you all something? What's the difference between the PAL version, and the US version of Sonic 3 and Knuckles?

I'm looking at the game cartridge I have, and I feel that I'm pretty good at the game; maybe not the best, but I was going through the game seeing if I could attempt at a speedrun with Knuckles. However, I noticed that on the page with the current speedrun, the times on there are way faster. Now of course that usually means that I suck. As a result, I took my Angle Island personal record, and noticed that it's 6 seconds slower than the other time! So I compared the two, and I don't really notice too many differences.

Overall, half of my times are way slower than the speedrun itself. The only levels that are faster are the ones with glitches (Marble Garden Act 2, Hydrocity Act 2, Flying Battery Act 1). Fill me in, are the two versions different, or so I massively suck at this game?
As I understand the 16-bit Sonic games, they're ~1/6 slower in real time on PAL than NTSC, but the timers are also slowed by the same amount* so the in-game times would be identical.

* 1 in-game second: NTSC = 1.001 seconds, PAL = 1.2 seconds.

I've recently started streaming practice runs of this game, they'll all be on emulator because my setup won't permit me to do anything else right now. For now, here's Sonic 3 with Knuckles in 36:00!

When comparing this run to the existing 36:55 on SDA, please note that:
1) this run is in 60Hz mode,
2) this run dies a couple of times - one is intentional (Hydrocity 2, it's necessary to reset the level boundaries), and two, I think, are not
3) this run contains some new tricks that weren't permitted under SDA rules at the time of my last run.

Also if you look back at my first recorded run you'll see a neat little trick in Launch Base 2... Knuckles can sneak up into Sonic's path and fight his boss (the cannon boss) which, when you beat it, stops the timer. But since Knuckles isn't meant to go across to the platform where the other two bosses are, there is no trigger for the timer to restart! Breakdown told me he'd probably time that section manually but that ultimately it was up to Mike, I don't particularly care either way, I like the trick but I'll gladly cut it because a) bouncing off the enemy is a one-shot deal and b) killing Sonic's boss requires a very precise trick that makes the time wildly variable.

I'm also going to finally do a Tails run, that will include a neat little trick on Carnival Night 1, a different Hydrocity 2 method (which has to do with the fact that the boss areas are in different places), and of course, the leap of faith!

Awesomegasm.

You rock Mike89.  I'd love to see a Tails run, myself.  I'll be checking out the 36:00 momentarily.  Can't wait.

Tails in 42:48

No unintentional deaths! For the most part this went -really- well, though there were a few hiccups (getting the SO1 glitch to work took a while, and then probably my biggest mistake was letting that boss turn around). Overall though it's good, -almost- submittable. If I can somehow hit the Lava Reef 1 boss glitch (running under the 10 ring box as it appears) I could save another minute that way, and also save a lot of pain because that level sucks. With it, I could probably sneak down to 41 minutes; without, 42. I'm not going to restart runs over it, certainly.

I probably will restart over the Flying Battery 1 boss glitch (which I landed this time!) though, because that saves two minutes and isn't particularly hard to do. I can't explain what's going on while I'm in the wall very well, but when the time comes for me to do the run for real I'll try and explain it in the comments.
Procrastination Nation!
Mike are you going to get around to doing actual runs?  That'd be sweet.
SEGA Junkie
I'm nearly there, in both cases I'm probably about 30 seconds of improvement away from doing real runs. The problem is on the capture side; I can't capture in 60Hz yet and I really really don't want to do a run in 50Hz because it will just look so slow Sad see: my runs on site.

I'm holding myself to a high standard: I want these to be some of the best runs on the site when they go up. The bar's been set with the Castlevania run that just went up, I want to exceed that.
