Light Speed! *shoom!*
There's a trick in Chemical Plant Zone act 2 that I can't get a hold of.  If you go download the nesvideo run of Sonic 2, you'll see which one it is.  It's the one near the beginning that takes off about a half of the level.

If anyone can figure out how it works, then please tell me.

Edit:  Currently working on Hill Top act 1 tricks, so if anyone knows anything good, please let me know.
Thread title:
Just call me the cynicism machine
Why don't you just post in the nesvideos forums and ask Q?

Look heres the thing. I'm not sure if you can honestly do that trick without the help of emulation or not. There are somethings that you cant be expected to do

At soniccenter, there were individual level runs of each level in sonic 2. The site is down, yes, but the videos are still around (the people who made em are at least)

If you contact me on AIM, I can direct you towards the people who made these videos, and you can watch them foryourself. See the differences between a real gameplay run and an emulated game run for each level. See what things the emulated run does that the human runs dont. Chances are that anything the emu run does that the human run doesnt is humanly impossible

If you do see something in the legit runs though, but aren't sure how to do it, then you can just ask the video creator yourself!

You shouldn't be using the emulated run as your guide for doing a legit run. They are two different things! You can use it in comparision with the legit runs though, and find out what is possible, and what isn't by asking the pros themselves! Contact me on AIM at GCNDAN20735 and I can direct you to them, or just email me at GCNDAN3702@aol.com
certes.
Im realy sure you can do this trick on a no-emulated game.
Is working fine for me.

yes, mario riding nothing
You have to jump while going down the ramp, and then when you hit the lip of the jump. The first jump I beleive you have a  5 frame window, and the second a 2 frame window. I might be wrong on the size of the windows, but I know they are VERY small and should probably be considered impossible to reproduce in real time.
Although you might be able to reproduce it by just doing the second jump.

But then again, it might not be enough force Sad

I'm going to just skip that trick until someone finds a way to reproduce it in realtime.  For now, I'll have to stick to a time of 1:20 or so.  :\
Hey

I managed to track down the video that I saw

he does a completly different shortcut around the same area, but it's faster! The only thing though is that you can apparently only do it with knuckles...

Maybe if you expiriment around with it though, you can get it because to be honest,I really can't see why you can only do the trick with knuckles

BTW, if you want to know, he beats CP-2 in 34 seconds using this trick. Catch me on AIM if you want it

Both jumps are required for the shortcut. The first jump is to get Sonic from rolling to running, or else you will not be able get far enough to the right to land on the platform at the top. The second jump is to get enough height on the jump to reach all the way up. You MUST roll down the hill, as running will not gain you enough speed.

As for the Knuckles trick: I'm almost certain that it's a Knuckles only trick, as you require his glide to get enough height at that ramp. This is assuming i'm thinking of the same trick, but I don't know of any others...
No no, it's a completly different trick

You'd have to see the vid. I asked him why, and he said that knuckles' graphics work differently then sonic and tails, so for some reason the foreground acts as a background for knuckles in that specific area, wheras it's still a wall with sonic, and there's no way to avoid triggering it since it starts out as a wall as soon as you start the level

so ya, you're just going to have to resort to the trick done in the emulator!

He's right about the Knuckles trick.  Anyway, the trick on the nesvideo run is going to be extremely wierd for me to perform.  I'm not sure if I'll be able to perform it...  I think I'll just skip it in this run and try to do it in another run.

Right now I'm working on finding decent paths through Casino Night 1 and 2.  I've found one that's pretty difficult but can possibly get me a time in the low 0:40's.  That's not bad, but I know that the realtime record is 0:34.  I'll keep working on my routes and timing, but I can tell you guys that I'm doing pretty well so far.
