Is this a quake website or what? I thought it was a speed run archive but it seems like someone is in love with quake. There ARE other games out there you know.
SDA has been a Quake site since April '98, it was only last year that we opened up the "other games" section. Quake is still the biggest section on the archive, and it will most likely stay that way until a new game with the same speedrunning potential pops up...
A new game with the same kind of potential on speedrunnin is not going to happen anymore. It was an fortunate accident that quake fits on speedrunnin this well... Like bunny hopping, air control, grenade and rocket jumps, damage boost.. and all kind of combinations on these etc.. etc..
Unless someone makes a game thinking of speedrun, I find it hard to believe that a game like quake will appear any time soon...
You forgot to mention the hundreds of user-made maps. Sure, there's still id-level improvements now, but they're rare. Would the site have survived on ONLY the id and mission packs?

Well actually halflife2 is very speedrunnable with lots of tricks - bunny hopping, grav gun boosts, grenade jumps, barrell jumps etc but then again quake2 had lots of tricks and it never took off like quake1...
The key difference between those levels and Quake... Quake shows you the time. Also It's purely level-based. Q2 and hl[2] are 'continuous' levels. You can't run them except the whole game, unless you write a hack like q2timer which I was never satisfied with.

Yeah true though hl2 with a q2 style timer would be ok, i think it has potential though it would require hacks (eg starting with grav gun for levels after you get it in the game) which would not be very satisfying in the sda sense of speedrunning. so perhaps not which is sad since it has so many speedrunning tricks already. However most new games will have these sort of obstacles anway....
