welcome to the machine

This game needs no introduction.  Everyone knows it's the best game ever, right? Smiley  Without further adieu, I present the leaderboards.  The rules are simple: just list your time and name, in that order, formatted out of convenience for me, and indicate which category your time falls in. Saving is allowed, but since it costs time, be careful about doing it excessively.  Any% can also list completion %, but it's not required -- I'm just curious.  For low%, the highest % that will be accepted is 14.  See Kejardon's excellent low% guide if you don't know how to accomplish that, or you can just watch the even-more-excellent low% run we have up.  If you can pull off crazy TAS tricks and get a lower percent through out of bounds glitches, that will of course take precedence, although I'm not expecting anyone to do so.

So what are you waiting for?

Since we're going with absolutes, this is totally the best Metroid game ever and I think it could make a Nintendo SNES top 5 I guess (if you don't include stuff that wasn't published by Nintendo at the time but got bought by them later).

Even better, I have a time. I got this like 10 years ago, I will never touch again. Never tried 100%, in fact I've never gotten 100%, don't know where everything is, and I think getting 100% in games gives you cooties.

Best I ever got was :52.

Don't recall the item count, but 34% seems right.

Just wanted to let you know that I don't see the scores in the boxes in the MESH forum theme.  I'm getting white text on white.  You may want to change the color scheme.
PAL 50Hz KILL ME NOW
The problem with speedrunning this game is that it's too beautiful not to enjoy.

Anyways, SS 100% in 1:19 some time ago, I had to work alot because it started out with 1:45,
my homeys were really impressed XD
Been working on my speedrun of this for a good while now. Still have alot I need to learn before I can do anything really spectacular, but until then I'm having fun just beating the game as fast as I can right now. So far, I've got an any% of 0:49 at 30%.

...now if I could just beat Ridley without the Screw Attack... Tongue

I think my best time is just under 3 hours so do not add me to the list  Grin

Wow, someone didn't think that theme through.  Note to future theme designers: do not make your quote background color and your default text-in-table-color the same.  I'd change the color manually, but it'd probably make it look terrible and/or broken in some other theme, sorry.

Besides, who would ever use mesh when you have GirlyMan?
I got a :54 any% run, but it was on an emulator with lots of save state abuse lol, so don't count me.  I'm not good enough to churn out anything in the 40s or 30s, was just happy to break an hour.  I've got a pic but it won't load, eh.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
:36  Griggski  (26%) single-segment

I actually submitted this run in October of 2006, about a week before Hotarubi's :32 SS came out.  I was...not happy, to say the least.  That pretty much put an end to my Super Metroid speedrunning endeavors.  These days I stick to Rock Band, a completely non-speedrunnable game, and far less stressful.  Grin
Hail Discordia!
VorpalEdge: you might want to separate PAL runs (or at least mark them accordingly) because the times are not directly comparable.
we have lift off
My 1:18 100% was PAL actually. Whats the difference? Surely the in-game timer accounts for the 5/6ths speed, or are you just saying therefore its easier?

The differences are extremely minor unless you happen to be TASing.  That said, I should specially note PAL times anyways.  Thanks for reminding me.  And... updated.

I'm glad to see this topic is pretty popular!  To anyone else out there, remember that you don't need a really low time to submit.  This is all just for fun.  Frezy, your 3-hour run would be welcome if you could remember the exact time. Tongue

Griggski: wow, that really sucks. Sad

The PAL version actually has some differences that make certain tricks much easier and others much harder compared to NTSC.  For instance, it is theoretically possible to skip Bomb Torizo in PAL, in NTSC only with frame advance.
Master-88
Yeah bomb torizo skip is possible on PAL, but it is so hard. I never managed make it, even i am so close.

Everywhere PAL is harder than NTSC. For example doors open 0.36 seconds slower than NTSC. This requires almost frame perfect timing shoot doors without stop your run speed. This is so hard. Tongue

In-game timer that counts playing time does account for the difference, while many other timers don't. You can't open doors in single-screen rooms while running at full speed (without Speed Booster). IIRC, horizontal shinespark to Wrecked Ship cannot be started in Crateria lake room. Lava rises faster in certain rooms. You can, however, skip Torizo on PAL, and short charge requires less distance. There are other tricks that work on one version but not the other. Overall the differences are rather subtle but they do skew the comparison quite significantly over the course of an entire playthrough, even more so with longer runs like yours.
One run of Super Metroid that i've been dying to see but I don't think anyone has attempted is a no-dam run. It's entirely possible and it would make for an interesting challenge. Maybe one of you lads would like to attempt it? I would but I suck.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Me and many others think no damage is incredibly boring in general and even more so in Super Metroid (no suit skips), but it's not a bad idea in that I know some people really like that sort of thing, just like some people like to see 100%. I think you should try it. "I would but I suck" is not compatible with the casual speedrunning board! Wink
Well, I used to play it all the time, so I was good. But now i'm so out of practice that it would be a real challenge. But I may look into it. Also, no dam runs can be boring; and in this is would be annoying not having the damage boost thing (When you get launched from taking damage) but it would add an interesting element of new paths, new strats.
I would say for it, you would have to beat Ridley in the first fight. No shine sparking. During the room with the rising lava (for a bit) that everyone just morphballs and just rolls through would have to be normal path. But I digress; i'll look into it (refinish SM). Other people should try as well. Competition always makes things better.
What about that Japanese guy Shiznam something that got 31 minutes??

and that 36 Griggski, was his other alias smokey?

I'm not sure who you're talking about but Hotarubi got 31 mins. as well.  I believe the run is on his youtube page.

The Japanese guy who got 31mins was Hotarubi, as far as I know no one else has got close to that in a SS. Smokey got a 36min segmented run a while ago, I don't think Griggski is Smokey.
