Hey everybody, I know this doesn't really belong in this thread since it isn't for a speed run, but this forum has the best chance of bringing in viewers that can answer this.  Apologies in advance.  ^_^

I have been in the mood to do a SNES points marathon, and want to try and do it during the summer or before finals.  Some of you might know that I recently attempted a Super Castlevania IV marathon, but Twin Galaxies limits my lives on that title to only 5, so I could only last around 8 hours before the attempt was over.  I really want to find a title that can just keep repeating indefinitely with no limit on lives.  As you can imagine, this is where I need some help.

Does anybody know of SNES games that will continue to loop after you beat them, and reach a maximum difficulty at some point?  For example, some shmups like Gradius III I think might loop continuously, but there is really no chance of beating it after too many loops.  I currently only know of a few titles that will loop forever: Super Castlevania IV, Hyperzone, and Gnat Attack (Mario Paint).  I have run the first two previously (although Hyperzone has an in-game limit of 6 or 7 lives), and I lack a working SNES mouse to attempt a Gnat Attack marathon (how hilarious would that be?), not to mention that also has a life limit.  Those three are honestly the only three I know of.

Before anybody suggests titles, please refer to my backloggery:

http://backloggery.com/games.php?user=thesupersnes&console=SNES

I have looked into all of the games that I own, with a few exceptions (Incredible Crash Dummies, Tom and Jerry, some of the Super Scope titles), and none of them are possible candidates.  I suspect some of them like Zoop might continue forever, but they aren't exactly marathon worthy.  If you suspect a game might loop forever, please check my backloggery to see if I checked it already.  Otherwise, please feel free to suggest titles.

I have been looking for some capable titles for a long time, so hopefully the vast knowledge base here can help me out.  Wink  Thanks!

Waiting hurts my soul...
This belongs in General Discussion.

I didn't even know Castlevania IV loops forever.

Edit:
Spectre (good luck with that) is supposedly infinite, and the only one that comes to mind without looking more into it.
I wasn't aware gradius 3 could keep getting harder indefinitely. Do you know of any proof?

Definitely belongs in Gaming Discussion, the traffic there's higher than you might think.

And don't be so quick to write off Zoop, it can be pretty entertaining and challenging at higher levels.  We played it here for a tourney a while back, and there is a replay of the week's best score.

Edit:  Actually, it would seem Normand took those vids down (which is unfortunate, those were a good watch), but my original point remains the same:  Zoop's a damn fine, underrated puzzle game, and I know I'd watch at least a few marathon attempts on it.

I agree, Zoop would be really cool to see a marathon of. I also like Spectre though. In Zoop's case though, after about level 10 to 13 the speed levels off (at least any increases become less noticeable), so it's just a matter of training yourself to get past that point and then keeping up the pace. It would a good while to get to a point where you could play for more than 4 hours though. Same with Spectre though I'm sure.

I was also thinking Faceball 2000, but that may have an ending... possibly.
Bust-A-Move has a Challenge Mode that supposedly goes on forever.
Super Buster Bros. has a Panic mode that is endless.
Also, most arcade ports like Mr. Do! probably don't have an ending either.

First, thanks for moving this Breakdown.  ^_^

The reason I said Zoop isn't marathon-worthy is just because one death ends the attempt.  It would be good for a few hours on a really good attempt, but I'm really looking for one that will continue forever.  I'm still working on it here and there so maybe in the future I'll be able to.  Wink

Nope, none.  I know it loops for awhile, but my abilities as a shmup player prevented me from getting any further.  Haha.

There are a lot of games mentioned here that I have never even played before.  It looks like I have some research to do.  I'll begin with Spectre and Super Buster Bros. and then continue down the list from there.  I did think of arcade ports last night and remembered that the games in Williams Arcade's Greatest Hits ought to continue forever also.  I imagine Mr. Do! is the same, Zenic.

There are some great prospects so far.  Keep them coming!

The only game I can think of would be Commando...is there an ending to that? I never played it enough to find out; I'd usually get bored after playing it for a while. If I remember right it's just the same four or so levels but they just keep getting a little bit harder every time you play them. I would guess there is an ending but I'm just throwing this game out there just in case.

difficult and stupidly random
I think one of the modes in Wario's Woods SNES repeats infinitely.  I could be wrong about the SNES version, but the NES version definitely lets you play forever and the difficulty doesn't get any harder after level 100.

Granted, it's not easy to stay alive on level 100, since the stack starts just a few blocks from the top of the screen.  But once you've gotten past the critical first wario-round, the rest of the level is usually easy to clean up.  Once you're in the groove you could probably play forever.

As for score, i don't recall if the game has points.  It definitely has coins (you get more with each level depending on how fast you beat it).  So that might be something to shoot for.

I'm pretty bad at Wario's Woods, but I definitely made a note of it.  Thanks for the suggestion!

Mr. Piggy, I don't know of any game called Commando for the SNES.  The closest match is Captain Commando, but that has a lot more levels than 4, and I'm assuming it doesn't loop since the Final Fight series didn't loop and they're both Capcom titles.  If it is known under a different name, please let me know and I'll look into it.  ^_^

I forgot that you were only looking for SNES games :-[, Commando is for the NES. I didn't really play very many games for the SNES lol.

No problem, mate. Smiley  Thanks for the input anyways!

Oh, it does. The ending gives you the code for edit mode.
