I recently got hooked on playing Super Mario World hacks (don't worry, I legally own a hard copy of the original game) on Snes9x. However, they are so hard to play on a keyboard!

I got two questions:

1. Do gamepads work with Snes9x?
2. If so, can anyone recommend a good one for me? I'm hoping to get a gamepad that has a similar feel to a SNES controller.

Thanks in advance!

Yep, they do.  You can actually get USB adapters for you SNES pad, if you want.

I found a Playstation knock-off controller at Target for $2, USB cable only.  Works pretty good.
Fucking Weeaboo
1. Any controller that works in windows will work on SNES9X.
2. Get a PSX to USB controller adapter.  PSX controller I swear is the greatest thing known to man. ^^;;
(Or, since you own a SNES, there is an SNES to USB adapter out there, if you want authenticity.)

Thanks for the information. I never knew that USB controllers were that cheap! I have a $30 Target gift card that I won from a raffle several days ago; I guess I'll put it into good use after my final exams. Smiley
Even though you own the game, it doesn't make it legal to have the rom.

Unless you dump it yourself, and only used for backup reasons.
Nope, not even for that.

Pretty sure you can't do it for archival purposes.

Doesn't really matter though, since nobody's going to bust you for having ROMs. What's the 4chan Party Van going to do, look at an IP log and arrest everyone who downloaded a file one by one? =|

This. Nintendo (at least back in the SNES days) had a bit of legal stuff when you bought a game that you agreed not to make a backup. In general with software you're legally allowed to have a single backup for your own use, but not if you waive the right (as in this case).
What's the point of emulators being legal?
sda loyalist
What? Because there's nothing illegal about sitting down one day and writing a bunch of code.
Then why are radar detectors illegal?
sda loyalist
What?

WHAT?
Emulators play ROMs, which are illegal. Why would that make Emulators legal? Radar Detectors were built to detect radar. Just put a bunch of cords and stuff together, and you have one. Nothing illegal about that.
sda loyalist
commercial roms are illegal

roms are legal
roms are just EXE files for a different computer than your PC
i'm sure you have a few .exe files

OH NO ILLEGAL

do me a fucking favour and stop posting such unmitigated twoddle
That should have been said from the start.

If you have a wired Xbox 360 controller you can also use that with Snes9x and other emulators. Just imagine, using the same controller to play both Halo 3 and Super Mario World...

Too bad the 360's d-pad blows.
Long live SF64!
Yeah, I just use a Logitech wireless PS2 controller with a PS2 to USB adapter and then I use joy2key to map the gamepad buttons to keyboard commands.

The mapping utility isn't needed for SNES9x, but I use it to make profiles for lots of different programs and games, so I just have an SNES9x profile.

What's nice is with joy2key you can also map things to the mouse and have all the ALT, CTRL and SHIFT buttons, or even media buttons, so I use the other joystick for the mouse and then map the shoulder buttons to things like save and ESC and other convenient commands within the emulator.  Having a mute button right on my controller is nice.

To be even more nerdy, there's also a way to assign buttons to switch to an entirely different setup while you hold that button, so I hold the select button, and I can switch to other gamepad profiles by just hitting the square or triangle or whatever button is mapped to the profile I want.  I have a "standard" profile that's good for things like using the mouse, right and left click, TAB, Enter, CTRL, SHIFT, and ALT, scrollwheel, etc., so if I need to do something I can pause the emulator, switch gamepad profiles and go do whatever, then pull up the emulator, switch profiles back to SNES9x and keep playing without ever having to get up and get the mouse.

Yes I can be exceptionally nerdy and lazy, but then that's why I feel at home in online communities full of exceptional people. Tongue
