Jack of all Trades
So uh yeah, I've been playing this game a lot recently and despite how much I like it I have the feeling I don't know as many of the cool secrets as I should. Or maybe I do already, let's see!

There are tons of little secret rooms full of coins and 1-up blocks or giant blocks that have 3 1-ups/tanooki/frog/hammer suits. But what I'm interested in are the secret chests that act as an alternate exit to a level.

1. fortress in world 1, a whistle; everyone knows about this one!

2. 3-7 (the one with the green, spike spitting guys) Climb the beanstalk around the middle, hit the pink note block and at the end of the scrolling sky area is a chest with a Jugem's cloud

3. 5-1 Use a p-wing, fly straight up from the start, go up the pipe, fly through the tiny tunnel while ducking and collect the music box from the chest.

Any others?
Thread title:
Well, those things weren't so top secret after all ;D. And by the way. You don't need a P-wing in 5-1 to get into the pipe. You can with tanooki sute too.

Or with just a leaf.
Jack of all Trades
Sure, but it's very hard to get to the chest without a p-wing.

Not really. Run, duck, fly. But then again, I'm just being argumentative. A Pwing would make more sense for a speerdrun, of course.

The man made of sticks
I always thought this one was a really obscure secret, but little touches like that added a lot to the game:

"You can turn a wandering Hammer Brother into a Great Treasure Ship in Worlds
1, 3, 5, and 6.  To do this difficult trick, collect coins until you have a
multiple of 11.  Then score points, until the tens digit of your score matches
the multiple of 11.  Then at the end of the stage, stop the timer on an even
number.  For example:  44 coins (4x11), 10,140 points, and 152 seconds left.
The Treasure Ship has over 150 coins, plus a hidden 1-up near the exit pipe."

Source: JHarring text from Gamefaqs.

Another one is the fact that the Tanooki suit's statue form can kill some enemies that are almost invulnerable otherwise.  Examples include the flame jets on airships and the underwater Lava Lotus enemy.  This came from an old SMB3 guide when I had a Nintendo Power subscription. Smiley
You forgot the 2 others Whistle.
Jack of all Trades
Well, I was assuming everyone knew where all the whistles were located. The first whistle was given as an example of a chest that causes the level to end.
Ok I'm sorry  Grin

Perhaps obscure unless you're an FAQ writer, since most players won't stick around long enough for this to happen: chain chomps can break their chains and come after you if you wait and watch it long enough (around 140-160 timer seconds)l

Haha! I love this one! Found it accidently while I was on the phone and didn't pause. "So I says to Mable, I - HOLY SHIT, the Chain Chomp just kicked my ass!"

Well, for one thing, there's two US version out there. The second one has Toad avoid the wrath of Radix when explaining the N-Spade game (FEEL THE POWER OF YOUR/YOU'RE!!!), changes Kuribo's Shoe into Goomba's Shoe in one of Peach's... er, Toadstool's letters, and changes all the world names in the credits to really lame "_____ Land" names.

There's also quite a bit of almost complete levels lying on the cart.

(yay TMK. Although I remember a lot of the things posted before from my old SMB3 guide. Man, I must have been fairly young...)
MarioKart64.com biotch!
I know you wanted secret endings to levels but I have something else no one has mentioned.

Get a P in world 1:
Get all the coins and coin blocks on level 4, world 1 and a secret toad house will appear.
Jack of all Trades
Yeah, you can get a toad house in every world but 8 IIRC. They alternate between p-wings and anchors.
dinosaur from the past
It's not all the coins either. Just most.

I mentioned that about three times in the other SMB3 thread.
