Hi, I've been lurking around the site for a few years now and I just beat Besmir Sheqi's 1:24 Metroid Prime 100% run. I used the same route as him though, and the route is outdated. Also, my run is not WR; the WR is held by Miles and he plans to submit once he gets a better time.

So, my question is: Should I submit my run?
Thread title:
Fucking Weeaboo
If there's a known run that would be accepted here (if submitted) that's faster than yours, that's grounds for an immediate reject. So I say try harder and get a lower time.
Good to know. Thanks for the reply.

Pretty much what I was expecting, but I figured it was worth it to ask.

All the things
It's not always the case that a run will be rejected just because a faster run exists. Many runs on SDA are not the current WRs. At the very least you should be using the most up-to-date route though.

However for a high-profile game like Metroid Prime, you'd have to be prepared for some very tight scrutiny. If the run is solid with only minor mistakes and shows significant research and skill, it may still be accepted even if it is not quite the pinnacle of what's currently available. Should the record run be submitted after though, your run would most likely be dropped in favor of it.

That said, don't be discouraged from submitting. It is up to the verifiers to qualify your run; in the end, they get the say on whether or not the video is up to SDA standards and could provide some valuable feedback on how and where to improve even if it isn't accepted. At the same time though, you could get the same feedback from uploading the video to YouTube and asking other SDA members for places to improve.

I don't want to deter you from submitting since we all want to kick off zoid's runs but don't be surprised at all if Miles's run takes yours down within a few months after your submission. Still, show a video of how you're doing and we can probably tell you how well you're doing and where you can improve; streaming will definitely help as well.

The run is up on youtube. It's a 1:23 100% run under my name (Rick Weber).

But I am still curious if using the outdated route would mean an automatic reject given that the current run uses it.
All the things
Most likely, yes. Runs typically need to represent the best contemporary knowledge of the game. You don't need to conform exactly to whatever the current best well-known route is, but you'll need some very good reasoning if you take some slower options.
In that case I probably won't submit, but thanks for the advice.

HELLO!
It's a lot easier to get a run accepted if it's not a game that's commonly run and competitive. Smiley

like metroid prime 3
just( •_•)>⌐■-■ ..... (⌐■_■)wing it
Here's how it works.  SDA hosts run with up to date strats.  Certain games however are judged harder compared to others due to the sheer competition / popularity.  If you are doing Metroid Prime speedruns and don't use the most current strats then you should not submit and keep at it.
Not a walrus
Being slower than an existing, known (but not submitted) run isn't an immediate reject, but it makes it far more likely. Miles is actively working on MP1 100% so unless it's pretty close to his current record then there probably isn't much point in submitting.

on a serious note, if you want to improve your time, i seriously recommend watching miles stream at twitch.tv/milessmb and also his current record at 1:16

IIRC he says he wants to aim for 1:13 at the very least, though he could end up going for lower depending on how satisfied he is with his eventual 1:13
I've been avidly watching Miles's streams, and I've learned a lot of what I know about the game from him (in fact it was his runs that got me into speedrunning this game). The reason I didn't use his route was because it is so difficult that I probably would have gotten a slower time.
HELLO!
You should try!

A lot of people have been avoiding speedrunning the metroid prime series lately, since the standards have gone up so much. Just because miles's time is considerably faster, that shouldn't deter you from stopping. If anything, you should be more motivated to improve, since there's a lot to improve upon Wink

I don't recommend speedrunning for the sake of submitting to SDA; speedrun to have fun. It seems like you're very good at MP1 100% (far better than me, though I'm a lot more experienced with mp2); watch streams, join races (I'll gladly race you in MP1 100%, even though I suck at it; there are other mp1 runners too), and improve Smiley
Thanks Kirby. I doubt I will do any more segmented runs because after a while it became extremely stressful wondering if I was going to break 1:24 (I didn't expect to submit, I just wanted second place outright). I was in a really terrible state during the last few segments; those segments were the most difficult AND they were some of zoid's best. Luckily they went fast because it was difficult to get any sleep. I don't want to put myself through that again.

Still, Metroid Prime races sound fun to me, though I lack any method of streaming my attempt; would I need to stream the race?
You don't need to stream. Plenty of people race but don't stream.

like me. I haven't streamed a single race all summer because I can't <_<

Well I could stream on GBA emulator for fusion/zm but screw emulator
Congrats for your run R Web! Like Kirby said you should join us on SRL and do some races! Streaming isn't compulsory but recommended.
As someone who's verified for SDA (but not for Metroid Prime), I'd say that we wouldn't care that much if it wasn't the world record if the mistakes were only minor (or if it fell short due to bad luck). However, using outdated routes is a much bigger problem, and one that would normally get a run rejected.
I think there is too much focus on "perfect" runs. There just aren't going to be any. There will always be new routes, tricks found.
If we have a run that sufficiently beats the current run on the site (but perhaps not using the latest, best route or latest best tricks) and lives up to SDA's quality standards, then why the heck would we not allow it, if it was made using the latest route and all known tricks at the same it was recorded?
Note that I'm not advocating someone taking slower routes or purposefully choosing slower routes because it's easier. I'm only advocating runs using the latest and greatest when it was done.
Incremental improvements are better than being starved for runs for a longer period of time!
HELLO!
It's not demanding perfection, to say that an accepted run should use known, documented improvements in routing.

Rejecting an existing run not using these improvements IF they were not available when the run started would be demanding perfection in my opinion.
Otherwise I agree with you.
