Shots Fired is a speedrunning marathon featuring First and Third Person Shooter games. These games have traditionally always had a slot in the major marathons; however they are often swept under the rug by the overwhelming amount of other content. We’ve seen that marathons such as RPG Limit Break can be successful; but let’s be real - does anyone actually think that RPGs are the better genre?

What is the goal of this marathon?

We aren't going to be raising any money during this marathon. The main goal is to give runners an opportunity to showcase themselves and to showcase the variety of games within the shooter genre.

What counts as a shooter?

This marathon is for First Person & Third Person Shooter games. If you have a game that kinda-sorta fits that, feel free to submit it! It’s really difficult to define what a shooter is, and I’m not going to try to do it here. In the end, each submission will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine if it’s an appropriate fit for this marathon.

When is this going to take place?

The marathon is currently planned to begin on November 12 and end on November 15, though the end date could change depending on the amount of submissions received. The current plan is to use the newly created http://www.twitch.tv/ShotsFiredMarathon channel.

Which dates should I look out for?

This is how each stage of the planning is currently laid out:

    - Submissions end: October 7
    - Cuts: October 7-14
    - Schedule: October 24
    - Marathon Start: November 12

How do submissions work?

You’ll be submitting your games right here in this thread. Enter what you consider to be a time estimate that you can consistently get under without adding time for setup. You can submit as many games and categories as you’d like, the more we get the better. If you aren’t sure about your availability that's alright, otherwise estimate to the best of your abilities. You can edit your post at any point to add games or change details.

For your submissions, please fill out this form:

Availability: Weekdays after 6pm EST, any time on weekends.

Game: Generic FPS Game
Category: Any% / 100%
Estimate: 20:00 / 40:00
Description/Other Info: FPS Game with a heavy emphasis on strafe jumping. 100% collects every secret item in the game.

Game: Generic Third Person Shooter
Category: Easy / Hard
Estimate: 50:00 / 1:10:00
Description/Other Info: You don’t really shoot at all in this game, but that’s okay because we just skip everything. Hard difficulty adds more enemies which do more damage and removes checkpoints, but I can consistently do it and believe it makes for a better watch. I would like to take five minutes after the run to show off some hilarious glitches.

How will we communicate throughout the event?

We’re going to be using Discord to communicate throughout the event. If you want to get used to how it works I’d recommend joining https://discord.gg/0SarUu3yU9EOIx14, a general speedrunning group. I'll be sending out the link to our group through Twitch messages closer to marathon, so be sure to opt out of message filtering in your Twitch settings.

Discord has a few advantages over Skype for planning events, most importantly the browser version, multiple channels, and individual volume control.

Is there any way I can help besides running a game?

Definitely! The easiest way to help is by using one of our promotional banners on your Twitch; you can find these at http://imgur.com/a/1pa3d. In addition to that, I’m still looking into artwork such as logos, panels, and layouts.

Everything comes second to restreaming though. The key to any online marathon being successful and running fluidly is the restreamers. Please contact me if you’re willing to help out with restreaming, it’d truly mean the world to me.

How do I contact you?

If you have any questions the best ways to get in touch are to post in this thread or to send me a twitch message.

Game: Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath
Category: Any%, All Bounties
Estimate: 60 minutes, 95 minutes
Description/Other Info: Been running this game since early 2013. Lots of skips, glitches, OoB. First person is a bug/insect shooter, 3rd person is for punching and going fast. All Bounties has less skips, but more combat glitches. Both have grenade jumps.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist
Category: Any% NG+, Stealth, Perfectionist, Non-Lethal
Estimate: 1:40:00
Description/Other Info: Stealth game, does involve lots of shooting unlike some other Splinter Cell games, just of non-lethal weapons. Category is essentially "never be spotted ever" which involves a combination of being sneaky, or just running at people flailing my arms hoping to not die. Have a highlight that I think is funny as hell, but isn't related to the speedrun.

Game: Final Doom: TNT Evilution
Category: UV Max
Estimate: 3:45:00
Description/Other Info: UV Max is the 100% category for doom speed runs involving all kills and secrets in every map.

Game: Doom 2: No Rest for the Living
Category: UV Max
Estimate: 1:00:00
Description/Other Info: Same as above, but a shorter mapset.

Game: Doom: Scythe
Category: UV Speed
Estimate: 0:20:00
Description/Other Info: UV Speed is just running through the levels as fast as you can. Maps with a ton of huge skips and breaks.

Game: Resident Evil 5
Category: New Game
Estimate: 2:20:00
Description/Other Info: New Game runs of this are pretty neat, in my opinion, because routing is fun in this game due to the large amount of treasures and items spread around the game. Could potentially do Co-op which would reduce estimate by about 15-20 minutes if desired.

Edit:
Game: Doom 2: Hell on Earth

Game: System Shock
Category: Default Difficulty
Estimate: 40:00
Description/Other Info: One of the first fully 3D games ever made. I run the game at the original settings which is a fair compromise for speedrunning as Any% is just walking to the end. There's a lot of variety throughout and I can give nonstop commentary that can really show the complexity of the route.
Video (there should probably be a spot for this on the form):
Yeah people can post videos if they'd like, I just didn't want the thread to get too cluttered with large youtube links, not a huge deal either way obviously Smiley

Description/Other Info: Deus ex a classic game which is super broken thanks to the unreal engine. Allows us to do ALOT of glitches and just shows how to abuse game mechanics to the fullest (Glitchy save, duping, super jump, Dead man walking, Grenade clips etc)

Game: Deus Ex Human Revolution
Category: any%

Game: Metroid Prime Hunters
Category: All Items
Estimate: 1:30:00
Description/Other Info: This is the better "100%" category of this game and the best category of this game because it doesn't include getting every scan, which is tedious and out of the way most of the time but that's how the game defines 100%. Game is controlled through use of the 3DS touch screen mostly, with L to shoot and 3DS Circle Pad to move. This game is also home to many difficult skips and glitches, but they're all marathon safe so it's k

Game: Star Fox Assault
Category: Bronze Any%
Estimate: 0:50:00
Description/Other Info: 3rd Person Shooter that is heavily reliant on tight movement and good execution, through use of 3 different means in the run: the Arwing Ship, Landmaster Tank, and control of Fox on foot. Bronze is the easiest difficulty and fastest category. There's also a few skips in there too!

Game: 007: Agent Under Fire
Category: Operative Any%
Estimate: 0:50:00
Description/Other Info: A 007 game where you don't have to look at the ground to go faster. This run is mostly about good movement and menuing, utilizing diagonal movement on walls to save frames, and pinpoint accurate shots. There's even some cool skips on a lot of the later levels!

Game: Hexen
Category: Berzerker/Warlock/Cardinal
Estimate: 0:38:00, 0:45:00, 0:42:00
Description/Other Info: The categories are just different classes. Berzerker is the easiest by far and Warlock is the hardest, Cardinal is a nice middle ground. I don't mind which would get picked, I'll be practicing all of them because I was planning on submitting it to AGDQ again.

Game: Strife
Category: ZDoom/Veteran Edition
Estimate: 0:25:00, 0:28:00
Description/Other Info: ZDoom version allows for some cool rocket jumping, Veteran Edition doesn't but shows off more of some levels because of that. Pretty fun Doom style speedrun, not a very well known game so it's pretty cool to watch.

Game: Unreal: Return to Na Pali
Category: Any% Easy
Estimate: 0:25:00
Description/Other Info: Basically a baby Unreal game. It's the expansion pack and it has some cool tricks and boosts and amazing voice acting in the one cutscene we can't skip.

Game: Eye of the Beholder
Category: Any%
Estimate: 0:15:00
Description/Other Info: This isn't actually an FPS. I mean it's in first person and you can throw knives and shoot arrows, but yeah. I like this speedrun though, it's fun. Really fast and stuff.

Game: Gunman Chronicles
Category: Any% Easy No Scripts
Estimate: 0:50:00
Description/Other Info: I've done this in a bunch of online marathons so I wanna keep up the tradition. Best cutscenes you've ever seen, awesome half life style bhopping, and so many trigger skips your body won't be able to take it.

Game: Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
Category: tremere, gangrel, or nosferatu any%
Estimate: 1:00:00
Description/Other Info: more of an rpg, but we'll be almost exclusively in first-person. the speedrun is like half-life except with vampires. categories are different selectable clans in order of current fastest times.

Game: Trespasser: Jurassic Park
Category: any%
Estimate: 1:10:00
Description/Other Info: My name is John Parker Hammond. I was born on March 14th, 1928. What follows is a record of certain events in which I took part, between the years 1980 and 1997, on an island I will call "Site B". Site B was not to be a theme park, but a research station. This was where we did the real work. By 1989, International Genetic Technologies had succeeded in their design, to genetically recreate the dinosaurs. It was an unprecedented accomplishment, the pinnacle of 20th-century science, a work to rank achievements of Galileo, or Einstein. But it was not all so easy or so simple as it appeared. One seldom hears the true story of such events - what happened at the place where the world changed? How it began, what were the reasons, what was the cost?

Game: Gears of War (either original or the Ultimate edition)
Category: any%
Estimate: 2:10:00 (Ultimate edition will contain 5 extra chapters and speed run tricks/skips are unknown at this time, I will update this next week after I test things out)
Description/Other Info: Cover TPS, but there are a handful of speed tricks and a few interesting skips
UPDATE: The Ultimate edition fixed all major speedrunning tricks and has added in more of the in-game loading (game freezes to load the next area) as well as changed triggers to allow you to move on (all slower).  With the added chapters as well, this edition's run estimate will probably add an hour unless some new stuff is found

Game: Tomb Raider 2013
Category: X360 any%
Estimate: 2:00:00
Description/Other Info: adventure TPS with a decent amount of different tricks like door clip (3 different methods used), air "glide", sliding during walking sequences, using environment to skip sections, etc.  Despite being slower, it's arguably as entertaining as the pay-to-win PC run because of the extra tricks used.

Game: Rise of the Tomb Raider
Category: any%
Estimate: unknown
Description/Other Info: Sequel to Tomb Raider 2013.  as we (Shaddex and I) talked before, this one is WAY up in the air considering the game is released on Nov. 10th and supposedly 3 times the length of TR2013, so it will either not be featured or maybe as a bonus game?

Game: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Category: NG+any% / all rewards
Estimate: 0:30:00 / 1:30:00
Description/Other Info: technically a platformer and I'm totally cool with it being cut for that reason, but there are weapons and shots fired used plus the all rewards run is really an unknown category and showcases more of the levels and has a handful of new tricks and even some older tricks from the NG+ any% run

Game: Shadow Warrior Classic Redux
Category: Any%
Estimate: 20:00
Description/Other Info: Classic shooter using the Build (DN3D) engine, this features insanely fast movement and exciting tricks, not unlike Duke Nukem itself. It's also features a guy named Lo Wang, who really likes making dick jokes.

Game: You Are Empty
Category: Any%/Sprint%
Estimate: 1:00:00/0:45:00
Description/Other Info: Russian fps, about some sort of rekt soviet dream, has a lot of OOB, fancy enemies, but no sprinting in that game. Another category hacks game files to unlock sprint feature, but I'd better commentate on first one since I can talk through entire run and explain everything, without getting lost. http://www.speedrun.com/You_Are_Empty

Game: Shadow Warrior 2013
Category: NG any%
Estimate: 2:00:00
Description/Other Info: Lo Wang strikes back with broken dashing technique that allowes to go outside most stages. I actually hate this run, but it is kinda impressive, so if noone submittes it - I can derust on that.

Game: Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter
Category: Tourist any%
Estimate: 1:00:00
Description/Other Info: HD series of SS are more broken than original ones, flying tricks + some great music, also new tricks + way of faster movement were found, so I'd gladly derust on that game. Estimate is 15 minutes above what should be an estimate, because last stage is simply RNG and can take forever.

Category: UV-SPEED
Estimate: 25:00
Description/Other Info: That's doom, I can handle that. Up for race.

Game: Half-Life: Blue Shift
Category: Easy
Estimate: 30:00
Description/Other Info: The 2nd expansion in the original Half-Life trilogy, Blue Shift puts you in the boots of Barney Calhoun, a Black Mesa security guard. Half of the run is cutscenes (or "interactive-wait-arounds" as they go in Half-Life games), but the other half features plenty of intricate movement and aggressive combat. I currently hold the world record for this game with a time of 27:35 (without loads).
Video: http://www.twitch.tv/pjctv/v/12093466

Game: Half-Life: Opposing Force
Category: SS (i.e no save-glitches)
Estimate: 30:00
Description/Other Info: This is the 1st expansion in the original Half-Life trilogy where you play as Corporal Adrian Shephard, one of the soldiers sent into Black Mesa after the incident. The first 6-8 minutes of this game is mostly bunnyhopping from one waiting point to the next, but after the M249 machine gun is obtained which allows you to boost horizontally via it's recoil, the run becomes non-stop action until the end of the game. This run features plenty of movement tech, aggressive combat, damage boosting and teleportation shortcuts using the displacer gun, amongst other things. I currently hold the world record for this category with a time of 24:59 (without loads).

Game: Rune
Category: Any% (Easy)
Estimate: 1:40:00
Description/Other Info: A fun TPS game on the Unreal 1 engine, meaning it has dodging and save hovering. A few new strats (including OOB) have been recently found by me.

Game: Quake 4
Category: Any% (Easy)
Estimate: 2:10:00
Description/Other Info: A linear FPS game including strafe jumping, a few trick jumps, plenty of shooting, and the best dialog skipping method in FPS history (Hint: it's shooting).

Game: Wolfenstein: The New Order
Category: Any% (Easy)
Estimate: 2:00:00
Description/Other Info: A pretty straightforward run about Blazko's crusade against the evil Nazis. A game more about optimizations than cool tricks.

Game: Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
Category: Any% (Easy)
Estimate: 1:20:00
Description/Other Info: The standalone prequel to The New order. The run includes OOB, OOB, and more OOB, plus button pressing through walls and shooting nazis and zombies. A much more interesting/shorter run than The New Order.

Game: Rage
Category: Any% (Easy)
Estimate: 2:00:00
Description/Other Info: The post apocalyptic FPS from id software including strafe jumping, trigger skips, vehicles, cool environments, and the bunch. The estimate is for the old route of the game. I'll try and reroute the game in time for the marathon to include a lot of cool new stuff that has been found in the past few years, including RC Bomb Car jumping. Otherwise old route.
