What do you guys think of the idea of speedrunning shoot-em-up games like Gradius, U.N. Squadron, Super R-Type, or others of that sort? The run wouldn't be entirely fixed because death would cost some time, and the bosses could be defeated very quickly or very slowly. So I say if you want to run a shooter like that, go for it!

Not speed but skill like hell.
You go to vortiginous.com and watch the Perfect Cherry Blossom video. (The viewtiful joe ones are told to be not bad either, but I don't know that game)

If you produce such a video I think sdkess will be glad to host it.

Bosses tend to have an easy enough minimum time requirement. If you have that with a no-death run, it's the perfect speed demo.

Perfection, in that sense, is way too easy, in my opinion.

Vortiginous.com has some runs of those games, though.

On a related question, has anyone compiled videos of no-death runs for Gradius V? I know that there's some sort of Japanese super-play DVD for the game, but that it shows individual level runs on extremely high loops, rather than full-game runs of first loop. I also recall the people on Ikaruga.co.uk talking about compiling no-death runs and that Type 3 was sadly ignored (that's the Type that I first got used to), but I don't know the status of that project.

Isn't Type 3 the one where you can lock your options in place? That was crap. Type 2 for the win.

No, Type 3 is Formation Options. Type 1 is Freeze Options, the 'classic' type... many experts seem to love it for its flexibility in where options can be placed. I have a hard time using Type 1 to its full potential... Type 3 is easy. Smiley

Type 2 is quite the set, being able to sweep lasers across the screen is lovely. I don't like Type 4. Rotating Options is just too limited.

Bp_ : I think Shiner's Gradius Galaxies run was the first shooter run I had seen, and the biggest influence on my current love for shooters. I still suck at them though. -_-;;

100% runs=great to watch
Shooters are cool.  I personally dream of somebody ripping apart Tyrian for the PC on the various modes one day.  Otherwise...watching that Sin and Punishment for the N64 run made me SALIVATE at the thought of a Revolution remake/sequel/prequel/gaiden/ANYTHING!

I really ought to make a better run one of these days... that run is at least 10 million points below the ideal.
