Warning: Long read.

This post is pretty old, but the topic is still relevant to me, so I won't make a new thread for what I'd like to post. I have some time saving methods to share for Any%/Expert/0 for Shinobi III.

Before I do that, responding to you, SpiderMode, I can give you some pointers (I know you're just casually doing this, but you say you're learning):
Execution is everything. Make sure every single time you land, you are running. Never walk. To gain momentum lost from walking, do a Death Kick (jump, down attack) to get yourself back to where you need to be. Practice the short hop (lightly tap jump). If you short hop to certain platforms, you can still continue running. Try your best to minimize touching enemies in any way possible. Any form of touch from an enemy is bad news to your time. Trust me when I say that each time an enemy nicks you, the time adds up.
You don't have to kill most enemies when running this game. Personally, I kill enemies that don't take up time to kill, just because I find it more fun and entertaining.
Also, try not to collect boxes that are out of the way of finishing the stage. Always keep it linear and straightforward.

Now on to the fun:

I've actually found a few skips for this game that will help save time. I have yet to see these talked about anywhere, so I feel it's probably safe to bring them up.

The only video I have showing them is my PB video on Twitch, which is located here: https://www.twitch.tv/keaur/v/42857905

I can try to best explain it.

In Electric Demon 2(5-2) phase 4 of the stage, there is a particular clip that is utilized in most speed runs of Shinobi 3 to go through a floor on the left side. Without doing this clip, you would have to go to the right side, and break the crate to blow up the floor to the left to proceed normally. To perform this clip, you must perform a Kabekeri (wall kick) and throw a shuriken. You must throw the shuriken after the audible sound Joe makes, showing you've performed the Kabekeri (wall kick) to have the clip work most successfully.

I was playing around with this set up in various other areas of the game.
What followed are skips I had found:

Body Weapon [3-1] clip: This can be seen around the 6:59 mark. On the last structure that you are supposed to hop over before reaching the boss, below where the 2 crates are, I perform a Kabekeri (wall kick), throw a shuriken after the audible sound, hold right UNTIL the top portion of Joe is in the structure, then hold left (yes, left). This allows me to clip through the structure, completely removing having to jump over it. This trick only saves time if it is done within the first 3-4 tries of doing it. After that, you break even, or possibly lose time.

Electric Demon [5-2 / phase 1] clip: This is seen around the 13:37 mark. I perform a well timed shuriken burst to not only kill the approaching enemy, but also to destroy the box at the end of the line. You have two chances to perform this clip, only because the bomb blows up the floor. If the bomb blows up, try not to get hit by the explosion, and attempt the clip again. If you fail, just proceed as normal, as not too much time is lost (but can be, if you optimize your run times).

[5-2 / phase 3] clip: This is seen around the 14:30 mark. Instead of going below and blowing up the crate to access the seeming exit of this phase, I clip into the rightmost wall, using the same clip previously mentioned. This clip saves quite a bit of time.

[5-3 / phase 4] clip: This clip is already well known, but I may as well bring it up. This is seen around the 14:43 mark. You perform the previously mentioned clip, but you do not hold left or right. You just allow yourself to jump up with no direction. If you get it fast enough, be sure to guard (hold b and crouch) to block the 3 incoming shots of the machine gunner.

Traps [6-2 / phase 4] clip: This is seen around the 19:06 mark. This is actually the first "shortcut" I found, however, this is a risky clip. It's risky in that if you can't perform it, you lose a lot of time, no matter what happens. It's best to get this clip within 4 tries, or time is lost. You have to play with this a little. To do this, Kabereki (wall kick) off of the center structure in the corner of it, wait for the audible noise, hold right, throw a shuriken, then when Joe's body is mostly in the structure, hold LEFT. Proceed as normal. There is a second clip further on, similar to the [5-2 phase 4] clip. It is located at the end of this phase. You Kabereki (wall kick) up, throw a shuriken after the audible sound without moving, and proceed to the next phase.

That's all I have found as far as time saving shortcuts.

Oh, one more thing.

You know that rapid-fire shuriken method seen in the TAS?

I can perform this, and I'll tell show you how.
I made a tutorial vid - https://www.twitch.tv/keaur/v/42601442

Instead of shooting your shuriken, jumping, then in a split of a frame throw a shuriken again to perform a "double-shot" shuriken, try this:
Press Jump and Attack in an alternate fashion in a steady but fast pace. Joe must not leave the ground when performing this trick, and this trick isn't can be guaranteed to work everytime. I've been able to do it enough to where it is viable on bosses such as the one in Desctruction [4-2]. If you'd like to see it, this can be seen around the 11:19 mark. This can save quite a bit of time, even if you get hit and lose your POW (however, that is not ideal).

As you can tell, this game is my primary focus as of late.
If any of you could, I'd appreciate it if you could give me some insight on what I can do to improve. Say, if you know of a better strategy to a stage, I'm all ears. To give some suggestions, I probably could use some pointers on Destruction [4-2], Electric Demon [5-2] boss, and Final Confrontation [7-1 phase 1 and 3].

I do intend on trying to find more time saving-clips, but my options are diminishing on where I could attempt them.

Thanks for reading, guys.
Hope this helped.

Hello,

doing mostly runs for "Revenge of the Shinobi" i forgot a little about this great game. AGDQ 2015 was kinda reminder to me for the existence of this great game and therefore i watched your run, Keaur. First of all: It is as impressive as it is entertaining and absolutely awesome.

I gave it a new try in speedrunnin, so the community may grow as u wished :-)

Maybe u can give the prequel a try. It is (in my humble opinion) an even more awesome game than the third one.

Thanks for these advanced tips and strategies.

Best regards.

Thanks for the kind words, Miyamoto.

I'll check it out sometime. I haven't had much time for speedrunning, but I'll try to grab the game soon.
Haven't really done any glitch hunting lately in regards to Shinobi III. =S Really need to soon.
Fool in the rain
I've just gotten into speed running this game, I don't have a PB as of now but I work on perfectioning each level individually before I throw myself into the devil's den. Thanks to this thread I can study a lot of new strats.

I found a slightly faster way to kill Neo Zeed with the shield:

https://www.twitch.tv/keaur/v/97766585

This isn't optimal in a WR speedrun, but it's still neat.

Also found another platform skip in 7-2.

https://www.twitch.tv/keaur/v/84831591

This one actually does save a considerable amount of time, and is highly recommended.

I didn't think of it sooner, but on top of the previously mentioned platform skip, there is another you can do right before it.

Doing these in rapid succession is very high risk/high reward. If you mess this up, you must wait for the platform, which if you were on WR pace, would be an instant reset... right... before... the last boss. Good skip, huh?
