I use the time after credits. The time on the save file is the time of the last save before the final bosses.

As for it defaulting to no, I tend to mash slower and hold right. It doesn't always work but it helps sometimes. It is really annoying that it does that, and I personally don't see a reason for that at all.

Sorry I haven't really gotten any runs finished, everytime I start one something happens or I die and lose all my progress. If you wanna talk about the route/strats just message
me on IRC.

Edit: Here's a route I typed up for anyone that wants to try out any%

Here's the result of my first attempt at any%. http://i.imgur.com/LroyC9B.png

I had a strange glitch happen where I couldn't talk to the warp squid at polyp bay or open the menu. Lost time when I had to save and restart the game to fix it. Otherwise I think it was an okay first attempt.
Wow, you lost at least a minute by not getting 50 gems in the beginning.

Yup, I just checked and it was around a minute and a half of time lost by not having 50 gems. The dozens of resets of trying to get a 50 gem start are going to be pretty annoying for future runs but I didn't bother doing it this time.
Nice run DevlJoe. Are you using the same route as me or something different? Just curious. The 50 gems at the start will be the worst part of grinding runs for sure.

Also wanna race it sometime?
I used the same route you posted before, however I took a detour to grab the second heart container in the forest for safety. That was the only difference.

I was however thinking about the route this morning and I think it might be faster after the battle tower/second seal to go:
Battle Tower -> Climb up to desert warp and warp to forest -> get elephant -> get coffee components -> warp back to desert -> get monkey bullet -> get elephant stomp -> walk to town -> brew coffee, and shop

I did a quick test and it seemed to be about 30-40 seconds faster, though I was testing using a complete save rather than in a run so the enemy placement was different than it would be in a normal run of the game. I'm pretty sure it's still faster though.

And I would probably be down to race sometime, though I have never been involved in a race before and don't actually know what's involved in it.
DevlJoe, it's about time for your first race then, nothing to be scared of Smiley

I'd def be up for a race, so hit me up if you guys wanna do / plan something (fastest way would be the srl irc).

I haven't managed to get a full run in since my last attempt, but i had one decent go with around 5 minutes saved halfway through, so i'm hoping to get somewhere close to 1:30 soon
Yeah yeah. That is good. I based mine off an old route using the old warp system of the game.

As for races they're nothing to be afraid of. Usually just friends playing the game together. Really easy to get everything set up too.

I still have yet to finish a run since you showed the skull zip. My PB got good RNG with the 50 gems in the first fight and the final boss glitch early in the 2nd phase so it's kind of annoying being a minute or so behind starting because of bad RNG
So does anybody know how to deliberately do the quick kill on evil-shantae? I've never seen it happen or done it before but would absolutely love a way to skip that boss fight as it gets quite long. I've been trying just standing inside her hitbox constantly, which seems to register pike ball hits a little faster, but still isn't triggering the quick kill.

Also I tried running it again. I like this result better, though there were still times when I accidentally went the wrong way. I also accidentally bought too many potions during the first shopping trip and then spent a little extra time collecting some extra gems to try and compensate for it.
Do you guys back-dash around everywhere? If so, how do you get it consistent?
Very nice time DevlJoe. I guess I need to start doing attempts again. That's only 33 seconds slower than the iOS run on youtube which is the current best known time for the game.

Melodia, I do backdash. It's really just a timing thing, practice it for a bit and you should be able to get it down pretty quick. The elephant dash requires timing also to make it as efficient as possible.
Heya, Zeph and me will likely do a race tomorrow (around 2-3pm EST), would be cool if any of you can join too!
I probably could. I don't have an any% route so I'll be slow (and the final area I've only done once....). But I'd love to race anyway....and actually finish a race for once.

Nice, I didn't know what WR was or if it was written down anywhere. Is there like a leaderboard or something somewhere?

Anyway, it's nice to have an achievable goal. I could probably trim 33 seconds off just by not grabbing the extra heart container and playing it better.

As far as I'm aware I should be available, though I can't guarantee that I'll be free of interruptions by other people in my house. Will still try to be here for it though and hope nothing messes me up during it.
Hey DevlJoe are you around by chance?

Yes.

How I race?

That Guy
ngl, if I a. didn't have to sleep and b. had more confidence in my familiarity with the game I'd join you all in this live race, because I am actually somewhat interested in learning to at least casually speedrun this game (any% specifically)!

For now I'll stick to watching, if anyone wants to hook me up with a stream (realistically I won't be asleep for a while anyway :/ ).  I've only been through once casually. EDIT: Found one 8D
DevlJoe go to this link

as for streams Garlyle the race url is http://www.speedrunslive.com/race/?id=9rqvz?
itll have all the streams
Today I learned a valuable lesson about saving your game during races.

RIP me
WR get

Here's the highlight on twitch. Unfortunately the sound balance is kind of messed up so the music drowns out my voice mostly. I also messed up my splits so I don't have a non-in-game time, though I can time that later off the VOD. It's definitely new WR though. yay.
Congrats dude. I'll watch through the entire run in a bit. It looks like your time is around 1:18:06ish. Any big mistakes?

I fell into the water twice during the long room with the spike platforms in lab1. I also missed the first hit on Risky2 because I wasn't expecting her to have nice RNG. Other than that nothing huge, though obviously there's still room to optimize.

So... About that world record...

Here's the VOD. I actually messed up a fair bit this run and was paranoid about not having enough potions, but I can improve it later. I'm pretty proud of finding this out, so I just wanted to do it immediately. I'll make an image or video or something explaining the wrong warp soon. I'm going to have to do more searching for wrong warps to see if there is an earlier one too. The one I found is in a perfect spot though, as it is immediately after you get pike 3, so you have a good amount of resources to fight the final boss with.
It's beautiful. Can't wait for the explanation so I can start doing attempts. Great find.

So. I got 2:04:42 in  game time, 2:07.32 in my timer
I had some issues with live split so I had to split the run, plus it was really bad anyway. Running tires me out on top of a having both a killed run earlier in Hypno Dungeon, and a run killed right before this one that ended in Squid Dungeon.

Still, I've never seen anyone claim any 100% times (all items, all chests is my definition, though I can't imagine skipped many if any chests). The proof is in the pudding, as it were:

Incidently, the wrong warp trick could still apply to this run, given that it's certainly much quicker to go to that cave than sit through the shooter section.
