So this is the game I decided to do as my first serious run.
First off, magic mode doesn't seem like it'd save too much time -- maybe magic management might be better, but given you have less hits to work with (for plowing through enemies instead of avoiding, etc) it probably doesn't make up for it. It's essentially hard mode vs normal's normal mode.

Now, there's a mini-speed guide int he FAQ on Gamefaqs, but this version is a bit different. Most notably you can warp to anywhere, not just in pairs of spots. There's also a quick 100 jewels you can get by talking to the guy at the warp squip of the Pumpkin Patch before talking to the mayor -- you need to activate this warp anyway (it's a LOT faster to detour to activate it than to walk all the way back), so it's essentially no time loss.

Then there's 100% (get all maybe items), which is what I spent all day routing. Even this is pretty streightfoward, except for one big thing -- money at the end. It's easy to get through the game and get everything, but buying the last few items prooves problematic. Even with my extra wandering around (I still stuff well out of order trying to FIND the order) and not being overly efficiant, not to mention the ~four and a half minute 2nd trip into Hypno Tower right after getting the magic jam for 120 jewels, I was way short on the last couple items.
The only thing you can 'save' money on is potions You pretty much at minimum need a couple magic potions for the two trips into Battle Tower, and more is helpful. Plus health potions allow you to plow forward in some places (especially the boss of hypno tower).

Here's my initial route up through getting all the items. Only real changes outside of places to farm money I can think of MAYBE would be  some of forest items if it's slightly more efficiant (based on where the jump plates are)
My route also relies on resetting until getting 50 from the initial battle -- the Storm Puff makes the first boss go VERY quick (~30 seconds). In fact even grinding the last few and going back might be faster (the FAQ suggests warping from the forest but I'm pretty sure that would take just long enough to be not worth it)

so yeah, no glitches or anything. Also, always press select (or equivilant) to skip all dialogue.
Any ideas on money grinding would be appreciated. 120 in 4.5 minutes is pretty good but if there's any better would love to hear it.
Also pondering moving attract magic earlier which should help get some money, I'd thinjk.
Thread title:
Not too interested in picking up the game for running, but there's a glitch to kill the final boss quickly that I somehow managed to trigger when I played through the game. I had the Mega Pike Ball equipped and got charged by the elephant, and the boss fight ended immediately. I tried to reproduce it, but I didn't have any luck.
Yeah it's been posted about a couple times on Steam, and no one seems to know exactly how its triggered. It'll likely be patched out soon enough.
I was considering picking this game up for speedrunning, but I'd hoped there to at least be some speedtech to work with. Guess I might just have to find it all myself.
i completely agree with Magic Mode pretty much just being "Hard Mode". very rarely do i have problems with magic management while playing Normal.

I've been doing any% so I can't really agree or disagree with your magic jam routes.

I've been dealing with not getting the 50 gem start by activating the squid in lilac field, killing enemies in the forest while collecting the dog from Rotty, and then using the forest squid to go back to the fields. It is a pain in the ass, but it does cut down on resets until everything else is smoothed out.

As for the quick kill I've gotten it most when she jumps up in Mermaid, I stand under her and let her fall onto me.

There is also a safe spot in the autoscroller in the bottom left. Sit there and mash fire and you can't be hurt. It avoids the blades and everything.

Doing more testing, I'm pretty sure my forest collect-a-thon is optimal as far as where the teleporters are, but not positive.

Attract magic earlier (after first dungeon) is VERY helpful and pushing magic refil to the next shopping trip (after elephant but before monkey bullet), The three magic potions should be more than enough to last until then even with liberal usage.

For any% no resets I'd wager it might be optimal to go activate the pumpkin patch squid while killing nagas at the beginning and skip the 100 gems bribe, as one gets plenty of money with only a slight bit of wandering in the squid dungeon (using my route above, skip magic fill...though as I said I replaced it with attract magic). Also, I kill all the demon guys in the forest that are along the route as they are pretty much guarenteed 5 every time.
Where does resetting effect any%?

Getting the Pumpkin Squid is ~30 seconds out of the way and for 100 gems that's not that bad. Plus activating it right after Lab 1 allows you to teleport from Polyp Bay to the Pumpkin Patch after getting the deed, which saves a good chuck of time (I haven't exactly timed it, but it's like 6 screens.)
No no, what I was saying is, if you are not reset spamming for the 50 gems, then do this:
-Go out to patch, activate squid. Kill nagas until you have 50
-Go buy storm cloud
-Afyer coming back from dungeon, go directly to mayor, then warp to patch

Also, I noticed the speed FAQ seems to avoid getting the elephant stomp, which is needed to get one of the squids. Was this changed from the DSi version?
Totally Radical Awesome Game
If you crawl into a 1 block space and whip your hair, you can cancel the whip into a backdash. This causes you to stand up and either zip or go out of bounds. Enjoy.
So I had a revelation. If resets are allowed, then you can grind that spot in the hypno tower by saving and resetting. Which is a LOT faster.

Where can you go OOB with it? Testing it it seems to always put you right next to the opening....
Totally Radical Awesome Game
You can go oob in almost every crawlspace. The only exception being the ones that zip you instead. AFAIK there is nothing useful to be done oob.

Also, a decent spot to grind is right before the squid baron. Just climb up to the pots before the save, break them, and reload. This will allow you grind up enough for whatever upgrades early game.
Ah I see, I'll mess around and time some things over the weekend if I get a chance. What are your 100% times looking like?
I haven't done much practicing and have only beaten the game twice but I've got ~1:45 RTA any% and I don't remember what IGT was but I think it was a little less than 1:30.

Also thanks CavemanDCJ, I saw that in the iOS run on youtube but I couldn't find a way to recreate it so I just assumed it was some weird iOS only glitch.

I don't think there are any version exclusive tricks, but I am unsure what the fastest version of the game would be to run.
dsi can start with 1000~ gems through Mighty Flip Champs/Milky Way and not having to pause to switch items.
Steam has the very nice warp system which makes certain parts very easy and magic mode (use magic mode.)
ios is lol
yeah. iOS does have some easier platforming and stuff, but I don't see it being faster than the other two once someone actually gets into it.

I like the Steam version because of controller mapping, and not having to constantly hit the DSi's shoulder button for backdash.

I haven't actually finished a run yet since I had the gem issue. Plus I suck so any times won't be great embarassed My second run which is up to the final shopping trip (though not ALL due to lack of gems) is at 2:53. I've already made some improvements, such as going to the squid's cavern before deliveraing the babies (since you don't need a bubble for that jam).
As for grinding early, not sure which ones you mean. The big ones in the first room are only accessible from below which take a long while to get to. There's like ones right before the save room at the top of the chains, but do they grant enough to justify a save-reload cycle?

As for "use magic mode"....not sure why you say that. You take more damage for the price of having a better magic meter. It might make the game a bit faster but you have to be more careful (i.e. a lot less bowling through areas and using invincibility frames)...you're not stronger after all. It'd be a different category just like most games, anyway.

Magic mode gives you more magic, which is your primary source of damage. As you lose time every time you use a mana potion, there is no reason not to use magic mode. It being harder or whatever should be of no concern in a speedrun. As for magic mode being a different category, sure, as long as that category is called "any%."

After trying Magic Mode, I think it will probably end up being faster, but I think running on normal until you're pretty comfortable is fine.

Also, I have a bad habit of health management anyway so I don't want to amplify that quite yet.

Well no, you're wrong. Metroid Zero Mission for instance has "any% normal" and "any% hard". This is the same. And yes there's a reason not to use magic mode -- it's called "being able to complete the run".
Just completed a normal any% run.

Got a 1:27:32 RTA from Selecting Normal to Cutscene after Evil-Shantae.
Was a 1:26:54 IGT.

The run was kind of bad too because I switched controllers and I have now learned that the deadzone on this one is ridiculous and I walked back through doorways many many times. I only had 49 gems after the first fight, so I lost a chunk of time there. Then I wasn't paying attention to my gems and wasn't able to buy the Mega Pike Ball before Hypno Baron so I fought him using only the Super Pike. Had a couple wrong warps from not paying attention and didn't get the quick kill on Evil Shantae.

It's a good starting point, but its far from over.
The doorway thing screwed me over because I accidenly did it in the desert before a fall warp and had to walk a lot further on the way back :/ Wish there was someway to fix that...

I'm currently messing with this. I think I've found a spot where it is useful. Using it here seems to cut out a backtracking section in the hypnobaron dungeon by allowing you to get to the chest with the second half of the skull key before getting the mermaid dance. Saves probably 45sec-1min or so? Haven't timed it or anything. Also don't know if it's been found before.

Yeah it'd definetly save time in any run, as you could go directly from the other skull half to the boss.
Very nice find. Will be adding it in my runs from now on.
I just took a couple attempts at any%, not sure if i even have a good route, and got 1:38 (real time). If you guys are talking about IGT, is that the time after the credits or the time of the save file? Because those are way different for me, save file being the shortest by far (i think it was sub 1:30).

Also, the dialog options defaulting to "no" are a serious hazard for me, any advanced strategies for that?
