Lunar has 2 bomb attacks that he uses fairly often... and Tarus tends to either drop rocks or go punch happy so in the end, they'll drop fairly quickly anyways... I know you'd likely be looking for consistant S ranks, but I guess only having 2 boss/miniboss battles out of the whole game that rely on luck isnt so bad Tongue And who knows, in time someone might just come up with that 'heres how to always make it work' strat ^_^

Oh, and I was playing around in Western World (thats where i refill my health >.<) and you can get to the top at the beginning with and extended slide jump and 2(sometimes 3) boost grabs... I get it every time and it might make the level a little bit faster for you... It might not save you TOO much time... but if you can do it consistantly, it might help... In my run, I get up without the extended jump and only 2 boost grabs... and although its a bit faster, its a lot less reliable...
I'll check out Western World when I get a chance. I really do like using the gun though. It's the only time in the run where I get to grab a weapon... well besides missiles and bombs. Cry

Actually... speaking of Tarus... I remember reading something about a one-hit KO that the TAS was going to use. I'll look for the link to the MM TAS topic. It's somewhere in this thread.

hahahaha... your too late... I was looking at it yesterday when I was doing the level... seems the guy wasnt entirely creditable on his discription... oh well...

Although there was something I WAS wondering.... with the worm... I was playing around with the technique a little bit and it seems it works on just about anything... specifically the miniboss in Western World is what i tested on... its like throwing object A into object B while object B is airborne... its like they try to occupy the same space or something... it also only works when object A is JUST leaving Marinas hands...  its really weird... anyways, my point is... it works with two 'creatures' but i dont know if it will work with damage object like grenades and such.... if you see where I am going... im wondering if its possible to OHKO Lunar and Tarus with grenades and Rocks  :-/ Oh well.... just a thought i guess... hahaha

Reik: 2006-08-15 05:58:53 am
Too bad about Tarus... but are you saying that you're definitely able to one-hit KO the boss in Western World in the same way as the worm? ._.

Even if you could one-hit KO with a damage object... I don't know if you could get Lunar and Tarus airborne long enough for you to set it up.

Hmm, but the point in which it happens is when something is leaving your hands... if you remember... the worm can be OHKO'd  by both throwing celes OR throwing the worm... so the rock or the bomb would be airborne... while Lunar/Tarus is in your hands...  Either way, I'm not sure if the trio would act the same as all other enemies or not anyways... they seem to be a little different in terms of how they interact with Marina...

I was messing around with Western World some more, and something strange happened O_o ... I've never seen that before :S

edit: Messed around with tarus and rocks... couldnt get anything except him to fly across the screen >.<

He disappeared? Huh? That IS weird.

Edit in response to below post: Ohhhh... yeah that looked weird too. But it looks like at the end of the movie he completely disappears. Meh.

I can't get it to work with any of the bosses. :-/

Also, I think I'm going to use the gun in Western World. I want to avoid the extended slide jump as much as possible. xD Thanks, though.

He didnt disappear, what I found weird was instead of hitting and bouncing away from each other (which they usually do) the miniboss continually hit the guy I threw up... he was flashin like mad, and it obviously dealt a lot of damage to the boss too :S... oh well... not like it has any real use, hahahaha

Well, I am on Phoenix now.... and I hate him, hahahaha!

Well, I was hoping to finish the game today, but turns out I got an interview to get ready for... I'll play with Phoenix a bit longer but thats all the time I'll be able to afford :S
Cape does not allow user to fly
With the new BGing technique. I have Magma rafts down to 17.11 (thats with overshooting the star and having to BG back).

If I can nail it perfectly I think I can sub 13 this bitch.

Hey Cape, whats your BG technique (controller wise)... although I have a funny feeling you and Reik likely use the same technique Wink

I should be able to get around 11 seconds if I can get a GOOD run on that level where my BG doesnt slow down so much... but obviously I wont be trying until I at least finish the game... speaking of which, I finished Phoenix and got him sub 50... the technique is solid and extremely consistant... getting low 50 high 49 everytime... (looking your way Reik)

The run can be improved, but I'm happy with it for now

I lose momentum instead of gaining when trying the BG technique that Cape shows in his video. :-/

Consistent Phoenix Gamma, eh? *downloads video*

By the way, I just got my total time on my good file under 36 minutes. Grin

EDIT: Nice way to handle the beginning. I'm gonna try it.

Awesome... I remember thinking I'd never be able to break the 37 minute mark... now people are trying to SS around that time Tongue

As for me, my current time is just under 34:45...

OK, so Cape doesnt use the slide thumb then? Then again, I can gain momentum from a dead hault by sliding my thumb too.... but its keeping a really fast speed that I cant do...  :-/

If Cape actually has unlocked the true form of the boost grab, then I would expect quite a few times to be dropping by quite a bit Tongue

Hrm... I don't think the Phoenix Gamma strat is consistent because he doesn't always stay in place long enough after his first charge. Your strat did help me improvise one of my own though, and I'm getting around 52 seconds consistently.  Smiley

just move a little out from the wall... he moves away or stays in place relitive to your distance from the wall (after he charges) if thats the point in which your talking about?

also, he isnt going to charge away if you are down by the shield... he needs to be close to you ^_^

Also, while I was messing around with him, you can grab him while he is doing his fast poke move... just grab at his feet... not that it really matters if your taking his lance from him so quickly anyway
Edit history:
Reik: 2006-08-15 10:14:05 pm
Yeah... nevermind. I just got it.  Tongue

EDIT: The trick is moving just the right distance away from the wall while going for the shield. Cape, if you use this strategy in your run you can probably S-rank it even with the gold gem cutscene.

No vid.

I need some help doing it consistantly.

The Gamefaqs S rank strat:
*3-3 "Missile Surf" S=0:50:00
First off, don't get on the missile until you have to, the straighter it's
flying the faster you can finish the level.  When you do get on, be sure to
keep it as horizontal as possible.  Proceed through the stage as normal,
until you get near the entrance of the ^^ shaped tunnel.  I swear, this
level alone proves that the game's level designers were evil.  Before
reaching the tunnel, take the missile down off of the screen, so that it's
only barely not exploding.  You not only have to keep it down there, but
you must line it up *perfectly horizontally* and jump off of it into the
tunnel.  You see, like in many other side scrollers, they didn't bother
putting solid ground down there because you can't see it anyway.  So, the
missile is going to end up flying *under* the land and tunnel.  Good lord.
Anyway, once things are in place start slide jumping through the tunnel(be
careful not to get hit by the missile clancers).  If you didn't line up
the missile perfectly, it'll likely have blown up by now and you'll need to
restart.  When you reach the end, slide jump onto the platform with the
bullet-shooting tank clancer.  Slide jump off of his island and onto the
next.  Slide jump again(and possibly jet) and grab the miner clancer on the
first missile.  Immediately toss him away and land on the missile.  Slide
slide jump from there and do the same thing to the last clancer/missile
pair.  Then slide jump to the missile with the clanbomb on it and grab the
bomb.  Slide jump/jet towards the red blocks(don't let the missiles hit your
bomb!) and toss it.  Use your up jets until you can get through.  Then as
soon as you're on land again slide jump over to the exit star and leave.
(works for me, and gives me extra time).

I can then BG to the gem.

I just need a way to line up the missle consistantly.

Congratulations, Veysey! I doubt I'll ever be able to match some of those times, especially the ones with BGing. Excellent job. Grin

I had a bunch of suggestions and theories for level improvements, but I'd have to watch most of them again to remember them all. Here's one though: At the end of Snowstorm Maze, don't jump up to the platform. Take the pot all the way to the right and set it up against the wall. Then stand on top of it with your back to the wall. Now, when you take kids out of the pot, you won't slip backward. I can pretty consistently beat your current time using this method. Wink

I'm glad I waited until your runs were (mostly) done, because I've learned a lot of techniques from watching them. I just learned to shave at least a second off of the Final Battle by adapting parts of your strat.

As for my run... I'm attemping to follow the FAQ and figure out all this recording quality stuff. I swear, this is the hardest part of it all. xD

After I give up in frustration I'll post here asking for help. Roll Eyes

And LOL at Cape's Cat-astrophe strat.

EDIT: Forgot to say that I've completely revised and finalized all of my strats for every level. The difficulty of the run has increased a little, but I think I can handle it.

Unless something new is discovered, I'm ready to start the final run. I'm estimating the time on a perfect (and somewhat lucky) run to be very close to 37 minutes.

EDIT 2: I just calculated my estimated times with no mistakes and perfect situations for random bosses, and figured out that my time would be a little over 36 minutes.

Know what that means?

This run is going Sub-37, baby!

Yeah, I dont know if my videos are of acceptable quality or not... it doesnt help that everytime I compress the audio it needs to be compressed at a different rate because of some stunned reason it decides to fail...

37 minutes would be sweet... I swear if I could do ANYTHING consistantly, I'd likely try a SS myself (and possibly give you a run for your money)... but even asking me to run the first 3 levels in under 50 seconds just isnt gonna happen... soooo I guess I'll sit back and let the big boys handle it ^_^

Cape, that was sweet ^_^ I really cant wait to see your run Smiley

hmmm.... I think I want to get my total below 34:30 before even thinking about submitting anything... and even so, if it looks possible, I might even shoot for sub 34...
