My feelings on The Demon Rush
This is mostly the same as previous marathons, with only a couple of additions. As always, the additions are in bold. If you don't want to spend time searching for the additions here they are.
1. No cosplay on camera unless if it's related to the game at hand.
2. We expect you to use the gaming pc we're providing if you don't have a laptop with working hdmi out.
Games
-Do not try to add or remove games without Mike, Romscout, puwexil, or Murphagator's permission. We are running on a schedule, and it is best we follow it.
-Be prepared! Don't bother asking if it's okay to gather your stuff and get things ready for the next game, you were already given permission when your run was put on the schedule. Make sure you are ready with game and controller in hand at least 10 minutes before your game is up. If you're not sure when your game is up, then ask someone.
-On that note, we should have a space where you can place equipment for the upcoming game, so you shouldn't have any excuses for not being prepared.
-If you're going to a restaurant, make sure your game isn't coming up within the next 2 hours. If your game is coming up within that time period, make sure someone fetches you some food during a food run.
-There will be q-tips, rubbing alcohol and other cleaning supplies by the consoles in the marathon room. While you may use these to clean your stuff, you cannot take them out of the room. Also, marathon-related cleaning takes precedence over cleaning your stuff.
-Challenges are generally permitted, but only if they're requested by someone in the chat. If a challenge is going to make us go over the allotted time in the schedule by 5+ minutes, then ask Mike, Romscout, or murphagator about it.
-Bidding wars should end when the game is powered on at the title screen, unless if the bidding war ends during sometime in the middle of the game.
-Naegleria rule: Don't barge in and steal the show during someone else's run unannounced. The focus is on the gameplay and the runner's commentary, not desperate ploys at attention. The one exception is if you have the runner's permission and have it cleared.
-The Carcarian rule: Once the game is running. DON'T TOUCH ANY OF THE WIRES OR CONSOLES. There is a good chance you could screw something up. If a long run is going to start, then make sure you've moved all of your stuff out of the console/computer area beforehand. We're just lucky Yoshi Island auto-saves, and only an a/v switcher was hit during Chrono Trigger, but much worse can happen.
-The Fire Emblem rule: If your run is bad, it will be mercy killed. There is no objective way of determining whether a run is bad, but there are a few that deserved it, and one of them was Fire Emblem this AGDQ. By the time it was mercy killed it was 20 minutes over estimate with two missions still remaining. So there's your guideline. If people are unsure, romscout, puwexil, Murphagator and I have the final say on mercy-killing. The Raen rule addendum also applies to mercy killing.
The Raen rule: Practice your entire game, because the final stage/dungeon/area is just as important as the others.
PC Games
-We expect you to use the gaming PC that we are providing, it's a i5 4440 with 8 gb of ram and a gtx 750 ti. If you would rather use your laptop, it needs HDMI out. I have a displayport converter but I don't know how well it works.
-If we can't get your laptop working with our stream setup, then you play on the gaming pc, no exceptions.
-We expect you to bring a copy of your game so we don't have to spend time downloading it.
Stream
-Speaking of streaming. Don't stream during the marathon! If you're wondering why this is a rule since we have ample bandwidth, the ample bandwidth is a lot less ample if I let everyone stream, and there are at least 300 people staying at the hotel. If you want to stream using 4G/data plan, then be my guest.
-No cosplay on the couch or front two rows unless if it's related to the game at hand. The cosplay was out of control sometimes at AGDQ 2014 and was very unwelcome during certain games. If you want to cosplay something non-game related, then don't sit at the forefront.
-People take priority over stuffed animals and dolls. If the dolls start taking too much space, then we throw them off.
-No large hats or anything that obstructs people from watching the marathon. While it might be nice to wear your tallest, finest top hat, you need to consider the people behind you.
-We're using a movie theater-style format here. Unless you're the runner, designated couch commentator, or donation reader, then you shouldn't be talking. I'm not saying no laughing or reacting, but the event is big, and if I let everyone talk, then it will be a mess and everyone will be talking over everyone else.
-Laptop warriors and Smartphone sentries get lowest priority on the couch and front two rows. You might be doing a good job of tracking the chat using a laptop, but you're not doing a good job of paying attention to anything else. The only exception is if the runner has notes on their laptop and wants someone to check the notes for him or her, like UA did for Rane during FF4 in AGDQ 2011.
-Be aware that you are being streamed live in front of thousands of people and your actions not only reflect upon you, but the marathon as a whole, so be careful what you do on camera. It only takes one jerk to screen or video capture something embarrassing.
-If you do or say something embarrassing and/or obscene enough, like a racial slur for example, then you will be taken off stream and not allowed in the marathon room.
Stream Machine/tech station
-No food or drink anywhere near the tech station. The only exception is water (and preferably bottled) to keep yourself hydrated.
- If you mess with the stream layout I am going to throw you out of the tech station. If you really need to tweak a layout for some reason (and you'd better ASK FIRST) then make a new one, do not touch the existing layouts.
- The streaming machine is going to be pretty heavily taxed the entire time (streaming at 1280x720p at 60fps isn't easy) so don't do any web browsing on it or anything like that. OBS, WSplit, the AGDQ text tool, Fan and temperature-checking programs, and the 3DS capture software when needed. NOTHING ELSE.
-Don't bother cropping the underscan. It would need to be tweaked for every system change and the final videos aren't going to have cropped underscan anyway.
Audio Mixer
-If you don't know how the audio mixer works, don't touch it. Period. This includes the cables. The FX system is not a toy.
*The following should be obvious to anyone allowed to use the mixer, but I'm repeating it here anyway:
-The faders are marked and tested for where they are. Please don't mess with them. If you think (and you better have a good reason why) they need to be changed, tell CoolMatty or UraniumAnchor. The only fader that should ever be touched during the marathon is the one for the game, and only by people who are trained on the mixer.
-If you are going to mute the game channel when switching game consoles, don't forget to turn it back on. If you think you'll forget, don't do it at all.
-If people complain about audio, DO NOT IMMEDIATELY READJUST THE THE AUDIO. Use the headphones to check and see if the audio is in balance. People complain about audio all the time and the best way to test and see if their complaints are valid is checking yourself.
Microphones/Donation Station:
-Do not touch the room mics or their stands. If they must be moved for some reason, let whoever is running the audio equipment know. Moving the mics can (and probably will) make LOUD NOISE on the stream if the audio guy doesn't mute that mic.
-Do not breathe on or otherwise abuse the microphones. They are extremely sensitive, especially to moisture. They are not the type of microphones you can manhandle, unlike other microphones you may have used in the past. This is ESPECIALLY important for the donation station microphone, which will be very close to the donation reader.
-Donation reader is allowed to adjust their microphone to move it close (no closer than 6 inches) to their face, for best audio quality. ONLY move the microphone using the stand base or by gripping the shock mount (the circular cage around the mic). As always, the rule is, if you're not 100% confident in moving it, don't touch it.
-Donation reader should speak directly into the microphone through the pop filter in front of it. You do not need to yell.
-Keep in mind that this year we are using a far more complex audio setup. The microphones can literally hear a pin drop. Don't think that just because you're whispering, the stream cannot hear you. If you don't want to be heard, move very far away from the microphones. The microphones picked up people in the hallway right outside the main marathon room, and that was at least 10-15 feet away from any microphone.
