The marathon planning staff has been looking at potential SGDQ charities for a little while now, and after contacting several of them we have narrowed down a list of four worthy candidates. The final decision will need to be made soon, but it is important that this choice is made with community input. I will lay out some details about the four charities still on the table and will attempt to do so in a completely unbiased manner. I welcome everyone to openly discuss which charity they feel is the best option or to ask questions about each one that we can either answer immediately or ask directly to the organizations during my further correspondence with them next week.

There will be no poll, so you will at least need to post your choice if you have no other input. I will keep this thread running until the end of next week so that we can begin correspondence with our SGDQ beneficiary by no later than April 8th. Obviously, you shouldn't do anything stupid like make extra accounts or make extra posts as a guest to try and increase the tally in favor of any one charity. We will catch this, ignore your posts, and punish you appropriately. Also remember that this is not a thread to suggest charities outside of the choices given; there are several great causes to support out there, but we have worked hard to present the options we felt would best appeal to our community for the upcoming event and need to focus specifically on these now.

Here are the choices:

Organization for Autism Research

This is a group dedicated to funding research studies for autism and applying that research to benefiting those both directly and indirectly affected by it. They have been the beneficiary of SGDQ for the last two years and have had SDA choose which studies to put the donations toward after the marathons. They are also by far the smallest charity out of the four options and theoretically would benefit the most from a major fundraiser.

Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières)

This is a large international organization working in nearly 70 countries and providing medical aid to those most in need regardless of their race, religion, or political affiliation. Whenever disaster strikes somewhere, whether it be because of war, an epidemic, a natural cause, or a number of other reasons, medical staff is mobilized to help with the situation immediately. There is a constant need for groups like this to be around, and money is always going directly into action.

amfAR (American Foundation for AIDS Research)

This is a charity dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research. HIV is one of the most dangerous health threats in existence and unfortunately there seems to be no reliable cure/vaccine in sight as of yet. There is an extremely high need for research to continue being done in this field so that there can be hope one day for such a treatment to exist. Just recently there have been some breakthroughs in understanding the virus (see this article), so now is as good a time as any to be putting money towards the cause!

Habitat for Humanity

This is a large international organization that makes use of volunteer labor and donations of money/materials to build and repair homes for people. This is done both as a response to disasters and simply to help fight poverty throughout the world. Homes are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans. Needless to say, there is always a need for this type of service to be done, especially with a global housing crisis taking place. This is another charity choice where money is constantly being put into action immediately.
Thread title:
HELLO!
OAR seems like such a safe choice, and is already familiar to SGDQ viewers due to the previous stuff.

I would like to see SGDQ stick with OAR.

Call me biased, but I'm the type who would prefer to donate towards people who directly go out to help others, rather than promoting and helping research indirectly. OAR and amfAR are "more indirect" than the other two options, and I personally see support for mobilizing medical staff to be something different we can support and also a charity that is put into action immediately, as opposed to supporting long-term research (which, to be blunt, has been supported for quite often in recent marathons). I do agree that OAR is the safest choice, and of course, all of the charities are for great causes, but I guess I'll be the first odd one out to not vote for OAR (and probably be completely outvoted haha :P)

Doctors Without Borders
Feudal Family Lord
OAR is something I always support, as a person who knows people/is on the spectrum.

OAR for SGDQ
Yes, my name is Pooping.
I'd say either OAR, or DWB. The concept of DWB sounds wonderful and seems like something the world really needs, especially with a lot of the things that've been going on in the past few years. Though, I know people that have autism so OAR is something that has a personal link for me. I'd happily support both if I happen to run into any money. (I 'spose I'm not really much help with picking two.)
I would suggest Doctors Without Borders out of those four, though I would choose amfAR as my second choice.

Doctors Without Boarders is an amazing charity and one definitely worth supporting so I would throw my support behind that one in particular. I love that the money goes directly into action and worldwide medical care is something I believe strongly in.

Organization for Austism is a good choice but i'm gonna side with American Foundation for AIDS Research.  Really touch choice between the 2
Not a walrus
Splitting would require a pretty large reworking of the tracker, so I don't think that's going to happen.
I've always loved the concept of Doctors without Borders, DWB for me.

I really like Doctors Without Borders, so I'm throwing support behind that.

My feelings on The Demon Rush
So just wanted to say something. You can't choose two charities. Yes, these are all good charities, but at the same time, you don't get two votes.

EDIT: If you chose two charities, you are allowed to edit your post so that you only choose one.
SEGA Junkie
So, this might not be the best rationale for this decision but I've noticed in past SGDQ chats that autism research doesn't seem to resonate very strongly with our audience. I don't know if it's just me that's observed this, but that's what I've seen.

I would probably choose MSF just to hear you guys try and pronounce it on stream, but I'm happy to roll with whatever you choose of course.

OAR for my cousin Steven.
Doctors Without Borders.
Doctors Without Borders
Totally rad
AMFAR > Médecins Sans Frontières > Habitat > OAR

inb4 Arrow's Impossibility Theorem
Gets the cake.
I won't be attending, but I'm most in favor of Doctors Without Borders. I echo mike89's reasoning on OAR, if I'm honest. SDA has done fundraising for DWB before, so it should be easy to get hooked back up with them again also (I would think).
My vote goes to amfAR.
Sea of Green
I'd support amfAR.
Doctors Without Borders.

Initially I was going to go with OAR, but seeing amfAR as a choice, I'm going to go with that.

I've been a big fan of Final Fantasy Radio for a number of years and have spent time talking with its founder, Tebian. Tebian was an awesome dude who provided a fun service - streaming radio, other related Final Fantasy streams and such. The man unfortunately had AIDS, but did live a decent life with it for a long time (I think I remember him saying 25 years or so), before passing away last year to it. While the site suffered a crushing loss (its original .net and .com addresses pretty much died with the creator), it's still around with the streaming radio at least.

The reasoning I gave may not be important to others, but I felt it was important enough for me to discuss my reasoning.

I've noticed this too, but I couldn't think of an appropriate way to bring it up.

Tebian was one of the first streams that I started watching when I got into streamwatching, and I never knew that he had those problems.  That's really sad to hear, and I think amfAR, like all of these charities, would be well worth supporting.

It was something he kept hush hush about until the end, when his health basically failed. He did send out a newsletter and posted about it on his Youtube channel (and there was a post about it on the site, now gone) a couple of months before he died. So yeah, understandable if you didn't know.
