First of all, I wanna say congratz to Seiken for his run, there is 2-3 mistakes but in overall, it's a great run !
I've finished this game 300+ times, and I wanna ask if some glitches are allowed for speed-running this game, I won't say I'm gonna do it as SS or Segmented, because 5000 guys said this, so I won't go in that way.
Okay first glitch, it's called the "Magic Rope Glitch", here is a video from youtube, I am asking if this glitch is allowed, and if it is, will be in a new categorie, or can beat the actual run?
As you can see, with this glitch you can have lot of money from the start, so you can buy Faerie Walnut as soon as possible, so you don't have to level ondine lvl 2 for beating the boss of the earth palace, for example, the bad thing with this glitch, you fuck up an item (like candy, herb, every item can be fucked except the rope), so this is a particular glitch for a SS.
Ok 2nd glitch, you can skip the underground palace, when you got Dryade, just use flammy instead of going to underground palace, then go to ice island, where Nekko is, then save your game, go back to Dryade's palace, then enter in the underground palace, make a reset, load your game, and instead of being front of Nekko, you should be out of underground palace. For this glitch I've just tested on emulator, on NTSC game, and I plan playing on my PAL SoM, so I can't tell if this glitch is really working. I don't know if it's very clear, I don't have a fluent english, hope you can understand the glitch. Same question as before, it's allowed? Will beat the current record or just will be a separate categorie ? (Like warp).
Glitches are fine, it would be a separate category. However if you are using them, then you pretty much have to use the Sword Charging glitch too. That allows for massive damage, though it's tricky to pull off (I know, I've played with it - it's hard to do consistently right).
Well yeah, but there is a problem trying this glitch when you are playing alone, since you have to use a second controller, and I'm planning to do the run alone. XD
But I agree, doing a run using some glitches, it's better using EVERY glitch of a game, but well, the sword charging glitch is particular, and the rope glitch become less "awesome" by using it and as you said, this is really random.
And actually for a SS run, this will cost too much time or reset of the game.
Having played this game for CGDQ, I'm really reconsidering my stance on the charge glitch. The glitch doesn't really change much except make a couple of the earlier fights faster, and you can get roughly the same results by leveling a bit of magic and stun-locking the bosses with it.
That rope glitch is allowed, I don't think it's really worth a separate category because money doesn't really become much of an issue past the beginning, IIRC.
Well about the rope glitch, I'm trying to find a way to cancel it, because this is really hard to plan a SS with an item fucked up. I use the glitch, then I buy 4 herb, 4 candy, 4 cup, 4 faerie [...], so, the herb become the "Blata" glitch, so the herb is the candy, the cup is the candy, etc..., I think you see what I mean, so that's mean the last item you got is fucked up, for example if your two last items are the cup and the faerie, the faerie is the cup... so that's mean, you don't have any faerie that you can use. It's hard to explain for me, but I think you got it.
But actually, I didn't find any way to cancel, trying with save+reset and co, or making the glitch from another way, that's sux.
And of course, if you use the "blata" by error, your game crash.
First of all I didn't find any way to reverse the glitch, so I guess I won't use it at all.
Okay I tried to make the beginning really faster than Seiken's run, optimizing the route and getting the sword level 1. You have to kill 11 monsters to reach sword lvl 1, I managed to kill 6 rabbits before Mantis, then Mantis, and finally killing 4 Goblins to reach lvl 1 with the character lvl 3.
But I've seen a HUGE difference between PAL and NTSC game, when you completed the Water Palace, if you go back to the Canon's Travel south of Potos Village, in NTSC version you can use it to reach Gaia so quickly, but in PAL version you have to go Gaia by your own, because the Canon's Travel is just sending you to Water Palace... bullshit.
With this route I get enough money for 4 candy (required for Spikey), and I've found a trick in Tropicallo fight, with luck I won't use any candy cause of the bombs or RNG, here is a video where I manage to kill Tropicallo really faster, the trick is with the bombs, if you are top of a corner, you can't get any hit !
Of course you need luck, cause if the boss is only spawning middle you have a risk with bombs but by hitting the boss with charge lvl 1, from left or right, instead of front of him, you have more chance to dodge them.
Now I'm trying to reach (and beat...) Spikey without dieing... the nightmare of this run. XD
I think this is like a perfect try at this point, I can't hit him twice in the beginning and I don't know if it is possible at all, then I managed to hit him twice every times, just a perfect battle !
But I died like a noob against werewolf, and I think this will cost me a lot of reset to get this perfect battle again, damn you SS with this RNG game. I am playing on emulator to find the perfect route atm, but it's depressive to see how much reset you need to get a good luck. xD
Okay after 50+ reset I think this is just impossible to do a decent SS run, you need too much luck, and Spiky is really a run killer.
So I got few questions about a segmented run, I can make how much segments I want? This is not limited?
And, there is a FAQ about making segmented run? Because I don't really understand, you make a good segment (segment 1), then you stop recording the segment 1, and you're recording another segment, so if you fail, you just re-record again starting from the point 1? But how do you "save" segment ? Using multi-dvd? xD
I'm sorry if my questions are stupids, I didn't find any information for segmented in the FAQ (or I'm blind). ;/
The concept is Musashi you generally "back up" your saves everytime you make an attempt. So Segment 1 would be Start to your first save. Since you dont have to 'copy' the start since the game auto starts there is nothing to worry about. Just keep recording until you get what your happy with...
then when you start to attempt segment 2 you take the save file of the first segment (the one you were happy with) then copy it and then try segment 2 until you get it where you want it. It might take multiple copies, or if your game doesn't let you copy, you have to be sure when you save you want that segment.
DVD's just record what was played. So find the matching "recording" and keep those for later submission.
hope that makes more sense.
BTW, segments are generally more = better. but beware about being too segmented when a game costs time to save (i believe SoM has a 3-4 second penalty on saving cause of how slow the menus can be).
Yeah I understand about multiples segments, but what about recording? This is the unknown part, I don't know how to be very clear. ><; Okay first I never used a DVD recorder, so this can be stupid asking without trying one. xD
But, you are recording every times, even if your segment is bad, right? So you have to reset your record from the start of your segment? So you need DVD-RW? Or the DVD recorder can ignore a bad segment? Like an emulator with save state? xD (Dream on).
if you're using DVD-R discs, you'll probably burn through them too quickly, so use DVD-RWs. DVD recorders with a hard drive may cost more up front, but they really save in the long run.

Seconding this statement. Hard Drive recording = Instant Win.

Yes, make as many segments as you feel is necessary for a good run of the game.
Ok thanks for your advices, tbh It's not very clear about how recording a segmented (yeah I'm a bit stupid about it...), but for now it's not my real problem, I have to plan the run, but as I said in my first post, I don't know if I'll make it, I won't say "Hey I'll bait Seiken's run", there is 50 guys saying that in this thread. xD
Okay I am trying a crazy thing, doing a segmented run with this rope glitch, so I have to manage my item, this going to be really hard, as I said, the glitch is fucking up an item, so the trick I am thinking is, I have to buy the item I want to drop away in the latest.
So I'm planning doing something like: I buy 4 candy (this is really required for Spikey, even with saving, you just can't beat him without taking any damage... RNG ) then I buy 4 Cup, 4 Walnuts, and finally one herb. Okay so now, my walnuts are the cup, and the herb is the walnuts, so the plan is to never drop at 0 cup or 0 walnuts because if you buy a walnut when you have 0, so this will fuck up this item... understand ? xD But yeah, I have 3 "chances", because I can include the chocolate, barrel and royal jam.
I think you got it, so the plan is trying to use only 3 walnuts or cup during the entire game (but I can have pass it three times), for the walnut it's not a problem till you get Luna, since you have mana drain, and the girl can resurrect later too.
What do you think about this idea?
About how much segment, I don't know atm, for the beginning I was planning like:
Segment 1: Intro - Gaia Segment 2: Beating Tropicallo with huge luck and Power Wrist (so 7 hits required, I think I can beat him 1-min sub) till haunted forest before Werewolfs - Not sure at this point, because I am respawning at the beginning of the forest, so I am losing 10-12 seconds, but I have to perfect Tropicallo + Werewolfs + castle until the prison... risky. Segment 3: Werewolfs + Castle in the prison Segment 4: Beating Spikey + getting Undine Segment 5: Underground Palace, with free Walnuts I don't need to level Undine, should be a massacre, but cause of the RNG of slime / spawn saving is better. Segment 6: Ruins of Pandore (again RNG...) + Gaia + Water palace + Cleaning the Moggle's Village Segment 7: Earth palace + Flammy + Meka 1 Segment 8: Ice land, maybe Fire Palace, I don't know, depend if my Ice palace was fucking good, I think it's better saving at this point. Segment 9: Ruins 2 + Emperor Castle + Meka 2 Segment 10: Dark palace Segment 11: The Golden Tower + Luna's Palace + King's Palace + Doppelgangers Segment 12: Dryad's Palace + Mana Palace (never remember this name xD), with the little trick at the corner, maybe Dryade's Palace again, beating Meka 3. Segment 13: Pure Land Segment 14: Leveling... I am not sure at this point, but I'll have to level Dark and Dryad's Magic, but still finding a way beating Mana Beast without Dryad, but I doubt it's possible so... Segment 15: Mana fortress
So I guess the maximum is 17-18 segments, if I plan to cut it (beating 3-4 dungeons in a row is risky, if you have bad luck ^^).
Any suggestions? If you had the patience to read everything.
I'm trying to beat the game with the rope glitch, but I had a weird bug in the Spikey fight, I made a video of the fight as you can see at 1:47, the hitbox is fucked up, someone alreay noticed that? Never had this bug, so I don't know if it's cause of the glitch (this is my last candy so maybe the game tried something, since my candy has the cup skin...), or emulator related.
Since I've used my 4 candy, I only have chocolate, jelly and barrel left for the bug, if I can't beat the game I'm thinking using 3x candy and 1-2x chocolate for Spikey's fight, should be easier !
At this point I am 2mins faster than seiken's run (for the first 35mins), we'll see by using Walnut asap. ^^
I haven't really been following this, but I noticed that you mentioned Spikey being a problem. I hate to shamelessly plug, but I'd strongly encourage you to use this method to take him down. If you have a multi-tap (or use the Virtual Console version), this is the way to go. It's hard to do by yourself, but I know for a fact it's possible.
Definitely helps that you'll have a save right before that though.
Well yeah, but if I use this glitch for one boss, I should use it for every boss, and tbh the problem is this is really random to do it, and playing alone with 2 controllers is... roar. xD
I still continue my test run, I'm at Poleira, and I am 15mins faster than Seiken's run, atm I can keep my Walnuts, and I didn't use any cup or bought new healing item, still strong run with only the girl's healing spell, but this is easy with save state, if I see I can beat the game just with the rope glitch, I'll go to a real segmented run on emulator, then I'll see.

yes you should do this trick if you practice it with two controllers you can do this easily but idk if it is allowed because if you do the trick with two players at the boss fights you must switch the second player off if you running from dungeon to dungeon use it only at boss fights
my best is 5:25 with the trick with the second controller you should definitly go for sub 5 hours
and a tip place the second controller in front of you on a table then hold b on your controller with one hand and with the other hand you can switch the weapons and if you switched go with two hands on your controller sry little bad english
Krabbe was talking about a bug against the Mana Beast, but he didn't mention it, it was the weapon glitch I guess? Because I can't find any bug for the last boss. :[
Btw I won't use the weapon glitch, this is random, and when the bosses have more than 999 HP, you need two characters at the same time to be really better than magic, include the randomness, well, it's less random in a segmented I guess, but I doubt I can use it in an effective way. With my rope glitch I am 20-25mins faster than Seiken's run, if I find a way to beat mana beast without leveling, you can add 20+mins, not that bad.
I think with the weapon glitch I can be faster using a lot of reset, but I don't know really, in the TAS of the game, the guy is using another method for the weapon glitch, he's using the weapon level menu, then switching through them for both characters, since the comments are in japanese, I don't know what is the difference, if anyone knows?
Well, finally I've watched a speed-run from a japanese player, he made an awesome 3h19 single segment, using rope glitch, and he was able to make the glitch working in a better way, like having 20 walnuts (lol), and cancelling the glitch, got some techniques, but that's hard, he also played with the weapon glitch. But I doubt you can have a better time then 3h10-15 for a single segment.
The bad part is, the leveling glitch, by killing your characters isn't working on PAL version, so I don't know how it will be going.
Stay tuned for more awesome SoM Speed-Run news ! (Ok ok I do too much. :D)
Is it possible to switch sides on Mantis without him doing something stupid like jumping into the air? Being forced into the corner and parrying his attacks doesn't seem to take any more time than stepping away. But, if he connects and knocks you down, then it'll actually be slower.
Obviously it's early in the run and so not much of an issue, but just a thought to make it more of a sure thing.

yes the leveling glitch doesn´t work in pal version thats right
but you can do this without the trick its extremly hard especially in the gold city gorgen bull can kill you so hard but with practice and good position it will work if you want i can do a video of the fight
the only problem is that you have less mana with the low level and Dryads magic costs 4 points
