everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
I never really noticed it until recently, but you really are like this to everyone all the time right? Heh, wonder why. I guess in my case you know I don't mind. Also it's funny you say that because we agree on just about everything anyway. Like there's not another person who comes nearly as close to having the same opinion on everything as you do.

I have something else actually important to tell you but well, it's something I really have to say "in person." Well, I'm talking to Rane and other SDA guys right now actually.

DT: Yeah, I know about the game being originally developed for the Sony CD addon. I think it actually helped this game to have a bunch of it cut out, I think this way for games in general when they're rushed. Adding more stuff doesn't change the game itself, and there's all these neat quirky things now like that town that does nothing, and all those random places you can fly to that do nothing. As for glitches, every Square SNES game is this glitched, and cutting stuff out wouldn't really affect that anyway.

I am just watching your Dark Lich fight while writing that.

If you have to use a walnut during one of the later boss fights, this seemed to have caused some trouble because the boss was able to attack rather freely.
You can easily prevent that by abusing a spell with a very long animation. Like that slow down spell from Gnome, Dark Force or you can make the girl cast an attack spell. Preferably a fire one, as they don't use much MP.

Also it might be an idea to try killing the first boss on the sunken continent (the onion like thing) with magic. With a high MP Drain level it's no problem just sucking him dry at the very beginning of the fight. You don't have that, but if you cast Ice at the very moment the fight begins it will hit him before he can cast Wall. Then just keep him locked and you're done with him.
IIRC he reacts quite well to ice, meaning he will go down fast with it.
It's amazing how many boss fights you can win in SoM with just magic spamming. I already recommended that the guys doing the run should use the Midge Mallet Magic Spam trick, but said they would only use it in case of emergencies (though with the luck you're having I would suggest using it regularly Tongue ).

Doesn't the midget mallet take forever to get?

It's not on the way, but far from forever.
You need an item from that really small and boring island, where only three houses are. You bring that back to the city in the dessert and after some talk you get the midge mallet.
I can't really estimate, but maybe two minutes.
Ummm... no you don't... You can get it from the Elder at Gaia's Navel before going to the Upper Land.
The trick I mentioned is shown in this LP by HCBailly. Just view the segment starting at around 0:40

You do this trick repeatedly, and it spams spells fast as hell.

Oh, I am sorry. I thought Midge Mallet was the name of the other think that mutates into one of those funny creatures.
And I didn't know about this trick  Shocked

Yeah, Moogles.
I played the game in german way back in the good times. And the translation is nowhere close to the original. That's why I lack the names of so many things in the game.

And I second the idea to get Midge Mallet for chaincasting. With 3 players you can't remotely control the Sprite to raise cast speed.
Yeah localization in the 90s didn't really preserve any "original lingual value" in videogames. Translators would butcher scripts, change names at a whim, and include lots of censorship as required by Nintendo of America. And sadly, most foreign language translations were usually based off those faulty English versions. Sad

The smith in the german version is called "Berti", instead of "Watts".
I remember that the Club Nintendo magazine at that time praised this as uncommonly cool and witty. The trainer of the national soccer team at that time was "Berti Vogts"  Roll Eyes

The names of the magical spirits are also translated... just ASS!
"Frosta" instead of "Undine". Frosta is a brand selling deep frozen food here. But at least "Frost" can be the same as "frost".
"Rocky" instead of "Gnome". We have the word "Gnom", which would be the direct translation. And heck, Rocky is a role Stallone played, nobody here connects it instantly with rocks - as a ten year old.
"Elektra" instead of "Sylphid". Meh
"Vesuvio" instead of "Salamando". The "Vesuv" is a vulcan and I guess this is the source for this unblievably creative name.
"Nocturn" instead of "Shade". Though this exists as a latin derived word in german, I refuse to call this a translation.
"Laterna" instead of "Lumina". Laterne is lantern. Hence this crap.
"Lunatic" instead of "Luna". Yes, laugh about it.
"Harzinger" instead of "Dryad". We have a region called "Harz" whose name is derived from the ancient term for "Bergwald" ("Mountainforest"). I guess next to nobody knows about that. Harz also means tree gum, which is probably the better association. But unfortunately "Harzer Käse" (Harz cheese, refering to the region) is well known.
AND THEY GAVE THAT SPIRIT A BAVARIAN ACCENT!

And this is only a small subset of what they messed up. If they would have made all names funny with geographical references or such, it wouldn't be THAT bad. But for some they chose to do that, others got latin based names, others refer to all day terms. A wild mix of bad and worse.

To close that rant: Phanah has become Heidi.

You see, your assumption of it being bad was kind of wrong, because it is way worse than a sane person could have expected Wink

I think that's the best one. I hope someone mistranslated that on purpose because if not, then that's just sad.

Too bad i didnt saw marathon ;'( Congrats for Secret of Mana and the other games ! I gonna to watch it Smiley

I'm going to take down the practice run this weekend, so if you want to download it, do it fast.

Also, the actual run itself is here: http://www.archive.org/download/ClassicGamesDoneQuick/ClassicGamesDoneQuick_part14_SecretOfMana.mp4

Think of it more as a comedy than anything else. Tongue

I'd watch it just to see Uyama chug some Hot sauce!... that and well; its sorta.. never mind. The run itself is kinda boring if only cause... I dont know where the hell i was going most of the time.. But if you want to skip to the end.. We were well coordinated for the Fortress!.. it rocked and rolled!

Hehe, I can remember they really tried to make the german localisation as funny as possible. I remember when you first meet the girl, the tribes people leave the cauldron because they say they need to watch a certain German Daily TV show, while in the English version they just go prepare something.
What's that gemma?
@ the midge mallet thing allgedly speeding up spellcasting:

The lag time after casting a spell only applies to if you are controlling the spellcasting character.  If you watch for example Sieken's speed run, you'll notice that spell spam is done by commanding an ally to cast a spell, and the allies can be commanded to do that as soon as the first spell is out.  So, the time allegedly saved can already be saved as it is.

Thanks for mentioning, but we already knew.
The discussion in here is mostly about the three player run during SDA's marathon, which happened already. And with three players there's definitely someone controlling the casting character Wink

But the main point of the trick is not to decrease the lag time between casting, but to reduce the animation length of the actual casting. But that only makes me think that casting spells using a pygmytized ally will increase the chain casting speed even more.

EDIT: I've just tested this out, and pygmytizing the ally you plan to chain cast with (Popoie, presumably) does slightly improve the ally casting speed, since it shortens the animation of the spell. The only downside to this is going through the process of pygmytizing the ally and then doing chain casting, but I think the overall result makes up for the lost time.

i have a question in the classic games speedrun how do you do the leveling trick in the dark palace is that possible with one or two characters.
The video feed for the secret of mana MAGfest marathon run doesn't seem to work.  The other runs seem to work fine.  Are there any issues with it?

It's easy. You attack an enemy that has wall, which repells magic. Your magic gets repelled at your party and you get a lot of EXP for killing such a high level "monster" Wink

You can also do it with just one player. With less than three characters it should be impossible, simply because i can't think of a situation where you do not have all three in your party and also can face an enemy that casts wall. AFAIK it does not matter if someone in your party is dead, though.

But i think it doesn´t trigger in the pal version i don´t know it and i think i upload this on youtube and you can see why it isn´t work.(sorry for bad english).

I'm still not sure if it's only due to PAL/NTSC differences, but I couldn't get the glitch to work either (on real SNES with PAL game)

Come to think of it, someone should try both versions on an emulator to see if it matters (because they you can be sure that you're performing the same sequence of actions on both PAl and NTSC) Smiley

Hmmm back to the wall glitch.... am I doing something wrong or is there a version difference?

Boy starts with 204064 XP
Girls starts with 197871 XP
I have 1-player control over boy
I let the sprite cast fireball on a knight with Wall
Spell is reflected, killing (only) girl in the progress
Boy still has 204064 XP
