My feelings on The Demon Rush
Okay to play devil's devil's advocate (or devil's advocate advocate), if people really stop donating as much for the relief efforts after a month or two, then isn't any money donated for the cause even more important?

Even if Japan has recovered in 4 or 5 months (lol no), causes like Doctors without Borders or International Medical Corps. are still very good causes to donate for.

EDIT: Deleted some previous posts because they led to an unnecessary argument and I may have been sounding less sensitive to Japan's situation than I wanted.

Does anyone have anything solid we could do for -present- relief efforts for Japan?

Now it looks like Mercury is having a one-sided argument. Tongue

The closest that I've seen mentioned in this thread so far would be for several speedrunners to sign up for a time and stream from their homes.

I could practice Soul Eraser to be good enough for next week, and I'd be up for gaming for a good cause.

The only problem with doing quick relief stream is the logistics. I know tsg and their community members have done one before, so I'm wondering how to do one.
I was the one that headed up the first of those "quick relief streams" at TSG. Essentially, I just provided hosting on my site, and took volunteers (mostly credible, active memebers) to play games and commentate. The schedule kinda evolved over the course of the thing, as we didn't exactly have time to really set a schedule in stone or even plan more than a couple games ahead at a time.

It was fun, but a bit stressful and a bit chaotic, I do have to warn Cheesy

I'm really glad there's a fixed date already and about the Japan relief effort idea.  It makes complete sense in light of the gravity of the situation and the fact that gamers owe a lot to them.  If this is really gonna happen the first weekend of August then I'm coming for sure.
Obscure games ftw
If the relief stream is this weekend (unlikely from the way the conversation is going) then I won't be able to participate due to:
1. a twice a year, 48 hour board/video game night WEEKEND held by two of the most awesome clubs at my college
2. I won't have time to work out the kinks in my stream
3. catching up on sleep so I'm not late for class on Monday, even though my first class is at noon Tongue

short version: I'll stream if I can, but have a time conflict if it's this weekend

so pro u don't even know
If people are serious about the tsunami relief stream but do not stream themselves (like me), they could try meeting up with someone who does stream that lives close to them. For example, from the SDA google map I know I live close to mikwuyma and TJP both of whom stream.

Ok, just reserved my ticket for the flight. I'm sure I can change the dates if needed but as of now I'll be arriving about 10AM on the 3rd and departing 5pm on the 8th. Figured that's enough time to help set up and break down, and I can push either date back if needed to bonus stream or anything else. I'd have liked to see if anyone else was going to respond to my request to party up, but the flights from Newark are filling fast.

Let me again wish the Japanese Relief Done Quick the best of success Smiley
Waiting hurts my soul...
There's a chance I may not be able to make this date. I'll know more in June. Those looking to carpool with me hopefully won't be too affected as there were other volunteers for driving out of LA. Move me down to a maybe, or possibly, or take me off for now as it's iffy at this point. Sorry.

Sucks man, as unlikely as a Bushido Blade race would've been I still wanted to have a showdown off-stream with you at least for fun.  Looks like I'll have to carpool with someone else but if that falls through I'll just get a plane ticket.  Hopefully you'll still make it!

Not a runner, but I make nice quality custom pins and stuff.  I'll probably do something for you guys to give to both the runners (souvenir) and the donators who win prizes (would just be an extra hassle to mail them to individuals otherwise).

Probably do something based around the promotional art for it when you guys start having that?

I was thinking that since we just did a marathon for Japanese relief (not to mention that TSG and other gaming communities are doing charity events for the same cause), maybe we could consider having the summer marathon donations go toward a charity helping with relief efforts in the southern US states that were affected by the recent tornadoes.

On the other hand, we should also consider different types of charities besides natural disaster relief.  Just wanted to get the discussion going.

I definitely agree that tornado relief would be worthy cause. I think when we were raising money for Japanese Relief efforts in such a short amount of time, we weren't expecting to raise so much (at least I wasn't).

I also could see going for a different cause, but if we do that, then what? Not saying it's a bad idea (it's a good one), but we need something more concrete than not disaster-related

What about Child's Play?
Highly Evolved
Because SDA did very well on a charity related to cancer, and since I'm also a proponent of something based locally with global reach, I propose the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.

http://www.huntsmancancerfoundation.org/

This foundation's sole responsibility is to fund the Huntsman Cancer Institute, a research facility located at the University of Utah.  http://www.huntsmancancer.org/  This place not only researches, but diagnose and treat a multitude of cancers.  I've seen on the news that they've brought people in from all over the world to undergo treatment that no other facility can do or afford to provide.

Everyone and their brother donates to Child's Play.  I'm not saying it's not a worthy charity, but let's spread the wealth, you know?

Also, I greatly approve of cancer related charities.

Damn, I'm gonna be missing this one too! (Interning in San Francisco until July 30th and then taking a one-week family vacation before coming back home).  Ah well.  Hopefully this one will have SDA-official downloads unlike JRDQ?

There'll be downloads for JRDQ, it's just taking a while because we're having to pull files from multiple sources, instead of just one.

No offense, but maybe my contrarian opinions (since deleted) weren't totally off base after all.

If we do not go the tornado route, I would like to again mention autism research or care as a possible idea.

Shouldn't we hold off on the massive charities for the big marathon of the year?

Maybe it's just me, but I always viewed the January Marathon as the big one, anything else as a sub-marathon.

If you figure 50k raised on the January one, and 25k on the internet one, and roughly 25k on a Summer one...yeah probably overanalyzing that. But still. Save the big money charities.

And I still think three marathons a year is too much :x Going to drain the coffers dry, people will take it for granted much moreso than an annual marathon or two.

For a charity...what about Heart to Heart National? Something anyone in the world can get behind.

I personally agree that two marathons is the sweet spot.  One minor, and one major.  In the alternative, I'd rather do one huuuge marathon and no others than try to make an annual tradition of three.  However, JRDQ was a special emergency, and I think we'll be able to survive just a smidgeon of marathon saturation, this once.
