If I am going to pursue a career in editing, I'm going to need to learn how to be burdened with hundreds of clips... To be honest, this is nothing compared to what I'm doing with my video editing class so I'll be ok...  If anything else though, if it wasn't for your suggestions and help, the video probably would be much shorter with not as many highpoints...  still though, I stand by what I say when I said "enough is enough" and that I may stop taking suggestions for clips since I think 50 minutes is plenty and how I don't want to turn people off by it being too long...  Again, after the first draft, more chances will be made still, but I want to make sure that the chances are just few instead of doing something completely new...  I want to make sure the 2nd draft doesn't take as long as the first...

Again, this is still going to be a while before its ready so take your time this weekend, I would however like to be done before MvC3 is released though since I'm sure that game will take out the rest of my free time... >_<

As for the last paragraph, well it is just like the case with xarguas...  The man who I sent the message to is a great speed runner who deserves credit for what he did... and even after all the shit that I talked to him about (although that shit was of course messing around with him... he knew that already, I was there though to give him full support) so I am just hope that he accepts so that we can have a section dedicated to Mike and this guy (who I will say who he is after he responds) to promote upcoming runs... and just to say, it isn't szsk, although it would be nice to include him too, but I think we will be ok without him...  If you are reading this though szsk and want your run to be featured, please tell me, otherwise we will save it for next year...

as for the sonic 3 clips of Mike, alot of great parts, but I am still hell bent on meeting the 2 minute rule, so there will be clips cut... Dead serious on that...  We already have to games over 2 minutes, and that is already one too many...

As for "Keep my suggestions balanced" I am doing that...  If I feel that a suggestion made seems pointless (not that I'm saying vectorman is pointless, but the suggestion made there made me question why is was suggested) then I don't bother adding it...  Glitches in speed runs almost go hand in hand so the idea of having too many glitches featured in the video doesn't seem to be a problem to me, meanwhile at the same we have plenty of clips that have no glitches at all so it does actually balance itself out...

Again, thanks for your concern and all your help...  Let's hope that the first draft will satisfy alot of people, but leaves plenty of room for improvement...

Oh wow, that's going to be your career?  I missed that before.  Well DAMN we picked the perfect person for this!

I completely understand 'enough is enough' as well as the 2 minute rule.  And I completely agree.  I think your decisions are going to keep this thing much more brisk and entertaining.

By the way, for Sonic 2, we might be able to cheat a little bit by cutting some of the boss fights.  All of the clips Mike suggested have boss fights (I think he thought we needed entire levels), and we don't need them.  That could save a lot of time.  So, the question is, do you have any issue about the number of clips from this game even if they all come in under a total of two minutes?  For instance, would you be opposed to five clips that together add up to 1:58 (this is just an example), or do you want to keep it to two clips or something like that?

As for your mystery guy ... was it someone/something from the marathon, perhaps?  You don't have to reveal anything you don't want to, I'm just gathering whatever clues I can.  haha

Well, I don't know what I'm going to do as a career, but video editing could be one... For now though, this is simple practice...  The guy I mentioned though wasn't seen at the marathon, so that should help but the list down in half, again though I'll mention who he is after I get word back from him tomorrow...

As for using as many clips in two minutes. that might be a stretch...  Of course using two clips under two minutes will probably be ok, but using 3-5 clips could be going too far... I probably would like to see how it looks before passing judgement on that, but if it goes how I hope it goes, I think we can cheat a bit to show two minutes of great Sonic 3 action...  Hell that could be at the very end after the credits like a "Surprise preview" or something... who knows, its a plan for now, plenty of time to change it if I need to...
SEGA Junkie
I didn't pick them expecting to need a whole level, as much as those just being impressive fights in their own right. The third one in particular really -requires- the boss fight because otherwise it's just me passing through a wall - about 40 of the 65 seconds of that clip is dead time waiting for the boss to show up. The first clip has my favourite boss fight, abusing the hitboxes in a way that intuitively looks to make no sense. The second one probably doesn't need the boss.
SDA Apprentice -- (3-1)
Alright then, I got word from my mystery speed runner guy and he was thrilled to receive the offer...  Almost immedieately we knew what to use, and I think this clip will be the best way to wrap up the highlight video... again, I might change it afterwards, but for now the clip will be the wrap up clip for the first draft...  Thank you again Mr. Speed runner, if you want to spoil who you are, go right ahead, otherwise I'm going to keep you a secret for a bit longer...

Mike89: As I said earlier, your Knuckles run is too good...  To try and pick a specific part and say that this was that game's highlight would not be doing your run justice...  Still, I'm going to play around with all the clips suggested and see what I can come up with... Probably what I might do is make your Knuckles run feel like a trailer, showing multiple parts within the two minute time frame since we are going to be showing a run that has not been officially released yet...  I'll figure something out, but all the same, your run is probably going to have the hardest choices I'm going to be making for this whole entire highlight video...

As for Baten Kaitos, I'm still stuck on which one to choice... Both suggested clips are good in their own right, but since I never played the game, I can't say which one is more impressive...  meanwhile I don't think RingRush is someone that can be reached but all the same, I will see if I can send a message to him and see if he responds...  Meanwhile I think I'll do the same for the person who ran Metroid Prime 3 since I've had about enough trying to figure out what to do with that as well without knowing what to do with it...
Haven't been following this topic, and I'm quite surprised BK:O even got mentioned.

Anyways, one worry I have is that seg 72, while a fast and climactic fight, it a spoiler for those who haven't played the game. I'd go with either 73 or 67 (it is around the same length as 73, only it is a boss instead of a normal enemy, and showcases the devastational power of Apotheosis, As you said, they both have their own merits, and either would work, even 72 if you really want it. I'll leave the decision up to you.

Thank you Ringrush for responding to the message I sent you an hour ago...  Baten Kaitos is a classic gamecube title and for you to pull off an RPG speed run in just under 8 hours (literally... 7:59:50) is a feat that is worth mentioning, although you have Mucky to blame for the mention if you want to thank anyone...

Personally when I view or watch speed runs, I know that I'm going to be spoiling myself, and I'm not going to sugarcoat anything...  I can understand that segment 72 can spoil the story for those who haven't played, but at the same time it was still an awesome part...  meanwhile I did review segment  67 and that was also impressive (although I don't know who is harder to kill, this boss in this segment or the Golem thing in segment 73) but either way the way you use "Apotheosis" deserves an honorable mention...

I'll think it over to see which segment looks the best, but I do thank you for replying to my message and to give us your two cents of thoughts...

EDIT:
After RingRush's recent post: Alright then, noted... We will fall back to the previous idea of using either 72 or 73...  I'll probably say which ever one looks more flashier or looks like much more work was put into either fight will be the one I'll add...  Currently I'm in class right now, but after I get out, I'll review both segments one more time and come up with a conclusion at that time...
On second thought, after I rewatched segments 72 and 73, I think they would both be better than 67, simply because there is a lot more involved. Seginus is pretty much just throwing out 3 damaging combos, while Baelheit and Cicada Golem have a lot of more complex MP building strategies (things like Guillo throwing out a random combo because I knew it would be cancelled due to danger in 72, or an enemy knocking Milly down so I could build her MP but not watch her attack animations in 73).

*comes out of the ref box*

After reviewing the play, number 72 did fall within the goal line, therefore it is an automatic touchdown...

But seriously, I feel that segment 72 is the better segment since it's not only a flashier ending, but it felt that this was much more difficult than the fight against the golem...  If anyone disagrees with this, please message now or forever hold your ideas until the 2nd draft begins...

Also until I get word from the runner from Metroid Prime 3 (paraxade) I decided to use the final boss fight for the game...

So that just leaves Sonic 3, which i'm working on right now, TJ&E2, Mucky will be looking into that, Dawn of Sorrow, which will be done once I can figure out how to split dual screen, and Shadows of the empire, which I need to edit still...  I already added my mystery runner to the list and while his clip will be going over two minutes, that is because I'm going to use a bit extra of his run as the ending...

So yea, 4 games left so that means that the ending material could be around 55 minutes...  not counting the four games I just mentioned (besides the two TJ&E2 clips I have on there already that one still needs to get cut out) we are looking at 49:05... so if we add three more clips and if they are 2 mins each, then we got a 55 minute video, plus who knows how much longer it will be after the title, transitions, and ending is added...  Still, we are coming down the wire now, and I'm very excited that this project is starting to come down to its closing...

Once again, thanks to everyone for their suggestions and assistance to still make this video happen, even after magfest...

Edit: After reviewing Shadows of the empire and what I suggested, I believe that I made a slight mistake on my planning...  It would be a bit pointless to show the same move three times, so instead I'm going to just feature the end of that segment since it shows the glitch twice...

One down, three to go... Current time: 51:08

If anyone knows how to cut the Castlevania video in half to use both the top and bottom screen, please tell me...

What did you mean by cutting the video in half to use both the top and bottom screen?  Is that a DS game or something and you want to have two clips going on at once?

Thanks to RingRush for giving his input on Baten Kaitos!  Also, thanks to Mike89.  I didn't mean to discredit your boss fights.  I did think they were impressive.  I just thought that glitches would catch more attention.  I'm completely fine with the inclusion of a boss fight; we just need to monitor how much time we spend on one.

Btw MAS8705, did someone ever finish that intro?  I can't remember.

Here's the plan I have for dawn of Sorrow... Show the gameplay footage, then show the map, and the back to game play... In better details: Show the part of gameplay to the part where the player leaves the screen... Then Show the minimap to show what exactly is happening... Finally back to the player once they go back to the game...

Because it is 640x960 instead of 640x480, that would distort the video... Therefore if there was a way to split the top and bottom screen so that they are two separate videos, then we can make it happen... Otherwise we might not be able to get it added due to technical difficulties...

As for that introduction... I think chrno never finished it since the magfest video was cancelled... Granted that since that was said, I haven't heard from him...  Still though, again this is a WIP, so all I care about is just getting the video out there, and then on the 2nd draft, add the intro, transitions, and ending...  I will still at least add who did what... As for explanations I'll hold off on it and if they are needed, I will add them later...

If anyone else wants to take up doing a title for me (or a fancy transition) then that is still open...
A Crab
Thanks for putting this together. The highlight reel is a fantastic idea since there can be a lot of "downtime" in runs.

It's been a good two-three weeks, but we are nearing the end of the wait...  Of course, I can't take full credit; the only thing I'm doing is just picking up the scraps of what was previously worked on, and adding a few more things...

Anyway, I posted on yahoo answers about splitting the video in half and got the perfect answer that I was looking for... Camstudio...

As stupid as it sounds, I tested it and it works... Just going to add a bit more editing and I'll add it in the main video...

After that all there is left is to figure out what to do for Sonic 3 and just wait for you to think about TJ&E2 Mucky...  After we get those last two clips, I'll post what I've done up to this point...  Again, the first draft will be somewhere about 50-55 minutes long...

As for the splitting if someone does not post in here with how to do that, you might want to post in tech support (edit: nevermind).  Speaking of which ...

Nate might be good for a intro.  It could be something simple such as here, here, or here.  Of course, if you REALLY want to talk intro, check out this sexy beast: here.

To be honest, I don't know what to do for an intro... It could be simple, but I would like to see if it could be something a bit more than just the still image... Granted though that is how all the speed runs start...  Again I'm not going to go through the immediate hassle of an introduction since the video is much more important right now...  Once we get the first draft done, I'll go ahead and start focusing on the specific details... until then I think we can have this ready by this weekend...

Again, it is just going to be a v1 and it will suck, but that is why it won't be the official one...

You know what?  I want to make sure that this is going to working... I'm going to post what I've been working on for DOS...  I can easily manuver it however I need to, but I want to make sure if this is ok to use and if we need to change it around, we can...

Cut down the beginning, cut out part of the ending, shorten the top screen... whatever needs to be done...

Nice to know that much works...  Anyway here you go... Some of my fancy editing in action... isn't much but it is a start here...

Again please tell me if I should Cut down the beginning, cut out part of the ending, shorten or extend the top screen (the map)... whatever needs to be done...

I also added a bit of annotations to express my thoughts... I'll take it down later...

But yea, this is a warping glitch that literally allows Soma to go flying around the map several times over...  When he lands, he is practicably finished... I mean, the run is only 2 minutes 32 seconds...

Still, I like that idea of fasting the map part though since that is actually a third of the run (a minute)... So anyway, I cut the map down by about 10 seconds (so now it is 50 seconds) and I'm going to see what it will looks like if you show the map part fast forward... Let me revise the video really fast and let me see how it looks...  I might update the video shown depending how it comes out...
Visit my profile to see my runs!
Nice work on the splitting.

My immediate impression is that we don't need that much of the map ... glitch? Warp? You could probably cut that part down to less than half.  Or, you could do a fast-forwarding effect.  But if you don't, I would just jump to the last third or so of the map view.  But that's me, and because I don't really like Castlevania games, I really have no idea what's going on in the clip aside from the description in the first post, so I can't appreciate it as much as the average viewer probably could.

EDIT:  You could also fade-out to show the progress of time, skipping the middle half or two-thirds of the map section and going straight from the start of it to the end of it.

alright last post for now...

basically take what you saw for the map in the last video and replace it with this... saved about 30 seconds with this... five seconds to show the speed at the start, 10 seconds of fast forward dashing around the map, and 5 seconds to slow down again and then we go to the menu... other than that, that's it for me tonight... I'm out of energy now...

Definitely better.  Nice work.

I think I would cut the start-up and slow-down to 2.5-3.0 seconds. It's totally up to you of course (that goes without saying, but still).  Also, when we actually start finalizing the draft (I know this is only the first draft, just noting for future reference), we are obviously going to want to put some kind of text over that, like "Fast Forward."

Yes, get some rest.  I'll probably look into TJ&E2 Saturday during the day, by the way, so I'll post sometime that night.
SDA Apprentice -- (3-1)
*sigh*

Alright, after spending all day on the video, I have set up the order of the videos...

The videos will first be listed (somewhat) in a related fashion...  So to speak like systems, gameplay, series, and etc... not going to be hell bent on keeping the same order, but during the v1, I would like to see for feedback on the order that is shown...  Near the end, it will feature both the Commander Keen and Spelunky speed runs in their entirety and we will run the credits (don't know if we should have just a black screen, something in the background, or even one of my edited MM9 speed runs just to have something)... After that it will conclude with the "Coming Soon" section that will feature Mike89's Sonic 3 Knuckles speed run, Zeupar's Sonic Advance Knuckles speed run (Knuckles is going to get alot of screen time in coming soon), and will end with the mystery runner I mentioned earlier...  After watching the segment he suggested, I can't figure out of a better way to end this year's highlight reel...

I'm not going to go off saying about transitions, openings, ending, or TJ&E2 since that has already been said several times over and I don't want to keep mentioning it, so I'm going to just skip to it...  I can't figure out how to do the Sonic 3 part of the highlight reel, so I decided that to do what any other fanboy would do in a situation like this...

Turn Sonic 3 into a trailer...

In this case,  I'm planning on making Sonic 3, three minutes long instead of two and I also would like to see if we could add background music for it...  Whether if that is a Knuckles theme or something else, it would probably be easier to make a montage of Sonic 3 moments instead of picking a specific one for now...  Of course if we should take another route, I'll drop the idea, but this is probably the best way to handle this game...  Once I figure out how to do it, I'll post it on this page again...
Visit my profile to see my runs!
I like the idea of a trailer; I keep envisioning little mini-clips piled up at the end as a big, flashy "did you catch that?" kind of trailer to leave the viewer thirsty for more.  You're Sonic trailer sounds good too, though.  However, I'm not sure about adding music to it.  Music tastes vary so greatly from person to person, and external music can be pretty distracting, so my fear is that we will make the video less enjoyable for viewers.  Also, Sonic 3 is filled with fantastic music.  Finally, it would be weird to have one and only one run that was accompanied by external music.

Anyway, I also like your idea to have a [loose] pattern connecting the videos.  It was either that, or showing them in chronological order, which might as well look like random order to laymen.  Though, this will also require some delicacy. We probably should not do it by system, because then we'll be ending either with a bunch of new-generation stuff, while I think most of the clips that people will remember are older generation, or with older consoles, but then showing newer games BEFORE older games would look a little silly.  Gameplay might be best, showing transitions from platforming to shooting to glitching to miscellaneous or whatever.

The reason why I suggest adding music on top of the video is the same reason why my edited MM9 videos are easily fake... It is the idea of mixing music from several stages together and could get a bit messy...  I'm going to see how it matches up and if that doesn't work, then it will be just using the sounds from the Sonic 3 run...  Since I'm planning on posting the video trailer before posting the actual highlight reel, it will assist in getting some feedback to see if different music should be used or just use what we have...  I decided to add three clips myself from what I saw in the Knuckles speed run (which makes it 3 from Mike, 4 from you Mucky and 2 from me... 9 clips to work with and since that comes up to about 6:15, its going to be fun cutting it in half... Smiley )

3:31- He takes off to the left to start attacking the boss, even before it shows up... Then once he finally lands, he is taken out in one hit...
7:38- Something that you had suggested earlier, but I missed what you said in that post but I saw it myself when I reviewed it... Another game flyby glitch...
14:00- Again, the execution on this fight was excellent... then after the first part of the fight, he takes off and juggles himself on the boss to death...

I will probably review the clips again today and I'll see what can be shorted to make the 3 minute mark... I would make it 4 minutes, but we already have two full length speed runs already, so I would like to avoid that...
Visit my profile to see my runs!
Oh wow, I didn't realize you were considering so many clips!  Okay, that's a different animal then.  Glad to hear it, too, I might add.  By the way, when you look at that other Magfest video I posted a bit ago, you'll notice that it's 45 minutes long.  So, we aren't doing that poorly.  haha

For some reason I thought you were talking about overlaying non-Sonic 3 music, so I'm not nearly as worried now.  Yeah, we'll just see how it comes out.  In any case, I'll be anxiously awaiting the trailer.  Oh, and tomorrow I'll be digging into TJ&E2 finally.
SDA Apprentice -- (3-1)

Alright, spend a good amount of my time figuring out how to do this, but it is finally ready...

The music is a Genesis remix of Pumpkin hill by a youtuber...  I added some of the sounds to keep it from being just music, but overall, I think it came out ok... Still this is the best I can think of for Mike's Sonic 3 run...

Hope you enjoy...

Okay, so I went through the 100% run of TJ&E2, but I sadly did not find something that really would have worked as a standalone clip.  Because the 100% run features heavy use of super jars, there is not a lot of tension when capturing earthlings, and the effect is that most of the cool moments are very, very brief.

So, I started going through the segmented run again.  I think a decent clip that features traditional platforming, as well as panic buttons and hill-sliding, is at 00:13 - 1:42 of the second segment.  I have not re-watched the entire segmented run, but I think this is good for now.  If nothing else, we can ditch the hyper funk zone clip and replace it with this, and then maybe end the section with the funkvac clip.

As for the trailer:  AWESOME.  The clips were fantastic of course, and we have Mike89 to thank for that.  By the way, if we go through with this trailer thing, we should definitely note that these clips were still performed in 2010 even though they may not be published on the site until later this year.  But anyway, probably the coolest thing about your trailer is that you connected each clip via gameplay, and it looks almost seamless.  Though, just so you know, the transition at 00:38-00:40 was so seamless that it might confuse viewers into thinking that whatever glitch was just used somehow transported him to another level.  Anyway, this was honestly very, very cool.  Good use of dem editin' skills!

Now, my only issue is with the music.  Honestly, it's probably just me. Maybe others with disagree, but A) I don't think the music sounded much like trailer music, and B) it was clearly external and will make this section really stand out in the video to the point of it probably making viewers forget what the point of the rest of the video was.  That probably sounds really harsh, but I don't mean it to be.  These are just connotations in my mind, but I think they're accurate.  Perhaps instead of a remix, could we try some music from the game itself?  Like, what about the final boss music?  The Super Sonic music?  If not something epic sounding like that, what about maybe something catchy like Metropolis Zone from Sonic 2, Spring Yard Zone from Sonic 1, or Sky Fortress Zone or Death Egg Zone from Sonic 3?
