I'm currently running a game (Ultima Underworld 2) where I've found a save / load glitch. Normally in the game there is a forced 3 second delay between using items to prevent you from sending a constant stream of missiles at an enemy, however, saving the game does not persist this 3 second countdown. As a result you can do this to abuse it:
* Use wand
* Save game then load game
* Use wand
* Save game then load game
* ... repeat

There is one point in the speedrun where I have to spam an attack spell 5 or 6 times to kill a difficult enemy. Would it be acceptable to use 5 segments here (each less than one second) to abuse this glitch? It would potentially save around 20 seconds in the run. I'm aware that it would incur a 0.5 second penalty per segment but it's still faster to use the glitch.

Just found another quirk - momentum is preserved when loading a game. This means that you can do something like this:
* Jump to max height, save at peak
* Jump again but immediately load game (at max upward momentum)
* Momentum is preserved, giving an extra boost upwards immediately after loading game
* ... to jump to any height, repeat over again

Acceptable?

Edit: This Youtube video demonstrates the glitch (maybe a little too quickly) in a place where it would save a lot of time in the speedrun
That is perfectly acceptable. Segments can be as long or short as they need to be.
Waiting hurts my soul...
Save penalty is the only obstacle to using these save/load glitches. Good luck with the run.

Awesome, thanks guys

On the jumping bug, you'd need to include the time doing extra jumps before the load as well, correct?  I'm sure it's still faster, just pointing it out and thinking out loud. Smiley
That's correct Rakuen

ok... so really instead of having three segments, it would be like a single segment with some saving and loading in it? Sounds like this would prevent massive abuse of this type of glitch - I like it better that way. Otherwise, you could potentially load a completely separate character which has all the items in the game and all the spells and the effects could carry over to the speedrun.
To give an example, in my Alpha Protocol run, it is single segment, however I use 2 re-loads.

The time counts against me in the pre-loads, the load times, and for everything that happens, but it's not a "new segment" as such. (At least as far as I know!)

Gets the cake.
As previously said, for the quick-attack trick you're fine. Segments can be as short as you need them to be.

For the jump bug, if it's a segmented run then it would go like this:

1. Segment begins, you go to where you need to do the trick.
2. Jump for the first time. Save at the peak.
3. Land, jump again and load. <- At this point, the first segment actually ends. As far as I know loads will not be included, since this is a PC game. The second segment begins.

From there you would just rinse and repeat steps 2 and 3, basically, if I'm understanding the trick correctly. Again, load times would not be included, but the time it takes to set up the jump AND the menu time it takes to save the game would both be included.

On the final thing you mentioned, I'm not certain how the mechanics of this game work, but if you're loading items or spells earned in another save file into the speedrun save file you would have to include the setup of the first file in your run time. It could be a seperate, newgame+ category depending on how it's done, however, so you might want to PM an admin with details on how it's performed and ask them.

Thanks for the responses guys - I'll definitely avoid having two separate characters going as it feels way too much like cheating. Haven't decided whether to include the jump trick yet, but it does save a fair amount of time so it probably will make it in.

Wait, he can also load another save, where he's standing, jump and load, right? To avoid the time waiting to fall down and land.

Yes.
What you could do is during a segment, save the game to slot 1 while on the ground.

Then, when you want to perform the glitch.
1. Segment begins, you go to where you need to do the trick and jump for the first time.
2. Save at the peak of your jump to slot 2.
3. Load the save at slot 1
4. Jump and load slot 2.
5. Repeat steps 2-4.

I'm not sure if this also means a double segmenting penalty, but even if it is, it would still be faster. Maybe not for the first few jumps, but it will definitely become faster the higher you go (and the longer your falltime will become).

The save in slot 1 doesn't necessarily have to be made right before you attempt the trick. Ideally it would be a save from another segment split. Just make sure that 1) You're on the ground, and 2) The save was actually made during your run, and not in some other playthrough.
