We did stop G4 from doing it.  Well, continuing to do it.

G4 makes advertising money off our runs when they sell slots during the "Cinematech" time slots, although I seriously doubt they make much money, if at all.  G4 is no longer showing any speed runs, even older ones they aired, because they failed to secure a written contract for use of our content - something we could have sued them for.

How do I know?  I called them up and explained I work for the press/media and I know how it works and they need to either stop airing the episodes or work out a contract with SDA/Speed Runners.

As for eBay auctions, it clearly states in the rules you can't sell items infringing upon other's intellectual property.  Auctions in the past have sold items using fan artwork of games - and nearly all of them are taken down if they are just reported.  eBay is a lot more strict and on the ball than G4.

The auctions are ending without winners, so I doubt they'll get caught in time to stop them now, but you can bet the seller is getting a Trade Violation notification from eBay, which could result in their account being suspended.

But the mere fact nobody is buying them should speak volumes for how un-desirable our runs are as a form of  pay-guide or pay-entertainment.

He's selling 'walkthroughs', not speedruns.  I wouldn't buy them either, and I'm a speedrunner.

You have to actually read the listing to see the 'done in the fastest time' part, but I highly doubt one person did until we came along.

I did say "pay-guide ".

When? And who did you talk to?
...out of curiosity, do we have any proof that this really is one of our own runs? Has someone actually attempted to purchase this to see if he actually can be sued or not?

Notice the screen shots.  If you scroll down on the ebay site you will even see that they are the same size.  What are the odds...

Yea, he also sell a castlevania DVD and OOOO HOW WEIRD castlevania 4 is not listed in it.
Sleeping Terror
Ahahahaha... it's silly when people sell things that are freely available, and even sillier when people buy them. But I don't see any bids on any of them yet.

He didn't take any of mine. Maybe I should do runs on some more popular games. Then people would steal my runs, too!
like cranky kong, but not as nice
it seems fairly certain these are downloaded from sda then burned to dvd... he even lists the zelda games in the same order as the sda game list

i'm unclear, however, as to the exact standing regarding copyright law: the games themselves are copyright nintendo, etc, but the runs should be the intellectual property of the authors/site (copyright is generally assumed once something is 'made'; the arguments come from providing proof of when something first 'existed'). however, a lot of the runs are hosted on archive.org, (the halo levels, for example) and that site is public domain, which makes his actions immoral but not necessarily illegal. (don't take this as gospel, i'm not an expert).

having just watched the superdemoworld run from biqwit's site, it might be worth radix and nate putting some sort of sda title screen on the runs to protect against exactly this sort of thing

Everything is hosted at archive except a few small things like most quake runs.

However archive's stuff is not all public domain, only if you say it is, and I don't.

We were planning to start, but a small title screen doesn't prevent someone from downloading, cutting off the first few seconds and then claiming/selling that.

Is there an easy way to maybe stick a small SDA picture in a corner, and have it stay there throughout a run?

Watermarks suck. We shouldn't start putting them in because of a few ebay *expletives*.

something or another
Looks like the miscreant got to SnapDragon's PoP runs too... rather conspicuous that he's got SoT and WW but not T2T, KIND of like SDA, hm?

Maybe a watermark for 10 seconds every 10 minutes in the corner?
King of hearts
I encode my runs myself.  To add a watermark would be re-encoding the run and further reducing quality.
No the Quail is not riding the Q
Are these your runs? I might be interested if they are different than the runs available on certain internet sites.

^ Asked this on the Question & Answer section.

Um, I just wanted to bring this to everyone's attention. I was on wimp.com a couple minutes ago, and look what I found: http://www.wimp.com/finishing/

This may be cause for concern. Although I'm not really sure if it should be, because that record was shattered by like what, 3 minutes legitly? Tongue

(Comeback and smash that record, LeCoureur :()

EDIT: Perhaps the possible magnitude of this situation hasn't completely gripped me yet. Maybe it's because I just got done watching that Voodoo Magic Trick video Lips Sealed

I think might be possible to prevent movies from being edited  or something. I am pretty sure their is a protection option somewhere.  If so then you could put an SDA intro at the start.

Nope. AVI files are simple things.

The only thing that I can think of is Macrovision, and that's only possible to create on a writable medium itself (like Nate's DVDs).  And then you have to pay damn Macrovision royalties, damn you for shutting down DVD Decrypter  :-X.
