Why be good, when you can be lucky?
Schedule/Games
I really enjoyed the schedule this year. The finale run was really, really strong. My only regret is that all the runs I wanted to watch were happening while I was at work
Venue
I feel like this is something that is said often for RPGLB, but the stream room felt so empty almost all the time. Is there no way to make it appear more "filled", as we often see in GDQ with zooming camera in on runners/couch? I heard from some onsite people that it was just impossible to see in the stream room from the projector, so this could also be something to think about depending on budget...
Chat/Website
I really appreciated the work the chat mods did this year. I know some people say they'd prefer memes not be banned so much, but to some extent I actually appreciated it -- so that I could read what people were saying…
Particularly at the end of the marathon, while the finale was going on. In comparison to last year, due to the growth of people watching, there were far, far, far more incideous and rude comments about “get on with it” and “shut up” while people were pouring their hearts out. Thank you so, so much to all of the chat mods for being on top of that. RPGLB is the one marathon that I enjoy having chat open for, because many of us are not the typical rabble of twitch who prefer to troll. But for amazing runs, as FFIX was, we attract lots of people. So thank you again chat mods.
Incentives
I was really looking forward to a few early-week incentives that did not get met, so I was a little disappointed at that, but not incredibly so. I think that they are either fine as they are, or that they might be scaled down a liiiittle bit.
That being said, the end of the week incentives and the bonus ones added at the end of FFIX after repeatedly hitting the “last” one were all really great, and it was extremely tempting and hard for me not to donate myself – seeing as I had already donated far past my own limit throughout the marathon.
Social Media
I was one of the few people on Twitter duty. Sometimes I was kind of nervous about what to tweet, and how often. It'd be nice if we could have some "set" tweets we do about the charity/donations amount/incentives/etc that we could do at "x" minute intervals if there's nothing to retweet. I tried really hard on my end to pick up some good points from the runs and tweet about those as much as possible.
Interviews/Pre/Post-Marathon
They were great, I loved some of the questions that were asked and I enjoyed them thoroughly.
The finale, as always, left me in tears. What I PARTICULARLY liked about this year was that AFTER all of the finale comments that everyone sang together. It really felt like the marathon was "closing up". Based off of the popularity of FFIX and Melody of Life, I don’t think that this is necessarily something that can or ever will be repeated. This being said, the decision to do all of finale speeches and then have everyone singing together was really, really harmonious. I could go on for hours about how amazing this was, but what is really important about this it that for people – like me – who were at home singing together with everyone… It gave me a feeling of togetherness with all of the people of this community, and knowing that there were many like me, at home, singing together with those of you at the venue all at one time… It was very special for me.
