I hope this is the correct subforum.

Hello folks. I've recently started speedrunning mmx up until the point I do 37-38min runs on an emulator. Now this summer I want to switch from that and I was considering importing a super famicom from japan with mmx to sweden(europe). Then something crossed my mind, I remembered that I have a wii lying around and then saw japanese people speedrun mmx on it.

I guess my question is:

Is it possible to launch MMX (japanese version bought from the japanese eshop) on a european WII (virtual console). I have no clue if rules such as PAL vs NTSC (50hz...60hz) apply on virtual console and I dont have the luxury to test it myself for a week or so(my only wii controller is at my little brothers place).

In the end if its possible and playable I'd save atleast 200$ by not having to import a super famicom and paying that shipping fee from japan to europe.

Tips and thoughts what the best solution to speedruing Rockman X and what system would be much appriciated.

This doesn't answer your question so much, but just an FYI, look at the picture attached. Apparently, it can be even cheaper. (¥3880 is about $40 USD).

Yeah. espesially on ebay I can get away pretty cheap. Problem is bidding war and ship costs. Only decent actual site ive found has been japangamestock which does it for around 30$ for the console, 10$ for the cables and about 40-60$ shipping(games not included)

Then ontop of that since i live in europe i need an AC converter
Ac converter+console(with shipping)+mmx+x2+x3 adds up to around 200 bucks

Short answer: Yes, you can launch Rockman X on a European Wii. It involves the homebrew channel and region changing but it is possible. The rom is 60hz, so you don't have to worry about that, and the Wii being from Europe wont hurt it at all, since the Wii is just a really lousy computer.

So all in all running the japanese rom on a european wii is possible. That's awesome news. I will give it a try later this week once I pick up a controller for the wii. There's no x3 on the virtual console sadly but I can always play that on a computer emulator for the time being as I dont speedrun it yet.

Ps, what is homebrew channel?
Fucking Weeaboo
Homebrew Channel is basically a channel that you install via exploits (which one depends on your Wii's system menu version) that allows you to install WADs/homebrew.

First you need to find what system version you have. The version number can be found by clicking on the "Wii" button in the System Menu, and then choosing "Wii Settings". The version number is displayed in the top right corner of the screen.

Depending on what system menu you have, you can use the following exploits:
4.2 or below: Bannerbomb - http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Bannerbomb
4.3: Letterbomb: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/LetterBomb

You use this with Hackmii - http://bootmii.org/ to install the Homebrew Channel. This will allow you to do various things. The first thing to put on your SD card is Multi-Mod Manager, which allows you to install WADs, such as Virtual Console Games.
MMM: http://filetrip.net/wii-downloads/homebrew/download-multi-mod-manager-134-f13015.html

As for playing games of other regions (like Japanese VC games on PAL Wiis), install Priiloader - http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Priiloader and use the hacks_has.ini file to disable region locking on your Wii. (Also take that time to disable locking save games, so you can copy any Wii save game, even ones that normally can't be saved like Brawl).

Hopefully that helps get you started. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions. I'm trying to do all this from memory.

Thank you so so so much for all this information. Will be very handy indeed! <3

There is no need to import the console yourself. There are usually plenty of cheap Super Famicoms on Tradera (Swedish Ebay). Otherwise contact Japanspel (www.japanspel.se), he usually sells them.

I think you can find a SFC with Rockman X for about 60-70$ inc shipping. If would at least not pay more!

Mr.K and Hurblat wrote something about the Wii-VC version of Contra 3 had a different framerate. This could be true for other game too?

Im 99% sure VC MMX doesnt have any effect on gameplay since most japanese streamers use their wii to speedrun mmx.
Yeah I might message that guy @ japanspel later this summer thanks for the link m8. Picked up my wii remote and gonna try to put mmx on there and see how it goes. the wii is 4.3 and has a chip. Not 100% sure if I have to softmod with a chip but hopefully google is my friend today!
Fucking Weeaboo
You will need to softmod in order to play install WADs and play VC games from other regions. Installing a chip only allows you to play backup discs.

Since you have 4.3, you need to use Letterbomb in order to install Hackmii. For this you will need the Wii’s WiFi MAC Address.

You can get both items and have it set up w/ your MAC Address here: http://please.hackmii.com/
This will save you some trouble. After that pretty much just dump it on your SD card and follow the rest of the instructions on Wiibrew.
Thank you for claryfying good sir. Dont have wifi in my apartment though. Hooking LAN up and checking mac address should work fine I suppose
Fucking Weeaboo
You don't need Wi-Fi itself, just the MAC address of the Wii's built in Wi-Fi adapter in order to activate Letterbomb.

Thank you all for every piece of information it's highly appriciated. Giving it a go as we speak, carefully with guides~

edit: I was able to install as boot2 (le brick safety #1) and backed up my nand on sd card!
Fucking Weeaboo
Awesome! Now make sure to install Priiloader and the hacks_hash.ini file and you'll be golden.

In order to set what hacks are running, you need to reboot and I believe hold reset on the Wii as it's starting up.

One last thing im not certain about. Everything is installed and completed. priiloader, checked region free hacks and etc that I wanted.
Is it safe to completely format my SD now and put wads such as mmx on there for install, or is there a file/s I should keep on the sd card? I backed up NAND and those files are on my computer.

Sadly I have had zero luck finding a japanese mmx wad so I'll try to access the japanese eshop and buy it there later
Fucking Weeaboo
Once you've got Priiloader and it reads the hacks_hash.ini file once, then yeah, you can get rid of everything, since you've backed up your NAND to the computer.

If you want to use any files for Homebrew Channel, make sure you create a folder called "apps" on the root of the SD card later. I personally recommend getting Homebrew Browser (look it up on Wiibrew), which makes finding and installing other Homebew apps really easy.
Currently trying to figure out why my screen goes black and wii locks up when i run US MMX and JP mmx2. I can hard reset the wii fine but cant run those VC.
Fucking Weeaboo
Some NTSC stuff doesn't like working on PAL and vice versa. MMX could be one of them. I really don't have experience with PAL Wiis, so unfortunately I can't help you much there.

I got it to work in the end. Both my american MMX and japanese x2 VC games. Had to use regionchanger app to change from europe to japanese and from pal to ntsc

color aswell so luckily enough the tv is ntsc compatible. Looks kinda terrible atm though, looks like the game is stretched out to 16:9 or something instead of its regular 4:3 (tv is widescreen)
Wii doesn't add black bars to the side for widescreen output for VC and GCN for games that were meant to be 4:3.

inflames90: 2013-06-05 01:05:45 pm
yeah. i changed my tv setting from 16:9 to 4:3 and it looks better. completely playable/enjoyable at least.

After deleting my swedish shop channel account I was able to get into the japanese one and download mmx.
Now to add to my to-get list. A pro controller and capture card :P. my gamecube controller works with VC games btw.

Many big thanks to everyone that helped me get this wii to this state!
Im guessing that I would follow these same instructions to play Paper mario 64 japanese on a Canadian wii?

Afaik all you need to do is the softmod with homebrew channel+priiloader installed. I can run both NTSC-J and US games on mine currently. Default in europe is PAL(used anyregionchanger)

oh and get an APP that can install wads for you
