Anyone know if a speed run done on a Retron 5 is technically legal? It uses an actual cart but it is technically an emulation machine since it just creates a ROM from the game cartridge. Has anyone done any tests to say whether it should be allowed in speed running or not?

No Famiclone is allowed for SDA submissions. If you want to do a speedrun of a game for SDA, it has to be on the original hardware or through official emulation like Nintendo's Virtual Console, Microsoft's XBox Originals, and the Playstation Store. Outside of SDA, if you want to speedrun on it, well at best it will be marked separately in the community and at worst discounted all together. Emulator runs from a PC are generally more accurate, as the emulator and its build can be checked to see exactly how accurate it actually is, and is generally more accepted, if the emulator is accurate (which is generally the case for NES, SNES and Genesis games, but this is not always true unfortunately).

If you just want to have fun and casually speedgame, then feel free though. I will say that there is one small gray area that was never adequately answered the last time it was brought up, and that concerns the AT Games Genesis famiclone. It's an officially licensed Sega Genesis, but its a pure famiclone with an official Sega license. So it has all the problems famiclones generally have with sound quality, though I can't speak of how accurate the emulation is because I've never actually played it. You might be able to get away with playing that one Khead, but I will say nothing beats playing the game on the original console (unless the VC version is faster)
