Resident Evil knife only run in progress. [locked]

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!

I've already spoken with Radix and I'll try and get the run prepared as soon as possible.

It will be a Resident Evil (psx directors cut) knife only speedrun with Jill (no regards to endings). Currently my best time is 1hr 22minutes but I expect to get it down to under 1:20 (at the very least).

mkm has a time of 1h15m15s at TG... so i would aim to come close to that or even beat it... i was getting 1h20m times on psx...but i gave up... and decided to wait till i got ps2... along with alot of other runs that are pointless on psx/psone

I guess Mike's time is pretty close to the max though, considering all the time he spent on the game. But sub 1h20 would be pretty impressive. Keep us updated Smiley

Kniferun...you're not going to tell me anything I don't already know.:-p I've been going to twingalaxies longer than you have. Wink

The only reason I set the goal at that is because it should be fairly easy for me to do. I do plan on getting close to it but I didn't want to make a statement that I would go for a sub 1:16 and end up with 1:17:12 or something like that and not want to send it.

I plan on playing through the game a few times over the next week and even more over the few weeks afterwards.

and tyranix says mkm's rocketlauncher run with chris isn't that impressive...which means it can be beat...so im im sure his knife runs can too...

MKM's rocketlauncher run was beat; the new record is 59:50. And I don't recall tyranix saying it wasn't that impressive. In fact upon examination of his PAL record when compared to mkm's record; which tyranix made around April of 2003 it was determined that he wasn't even close. Robert was the ref that examined the efficiency of each run in many different segments and concluded that tyson's run was less efficient in every area. It's possible that tyson has improved since then (After all it was over 2 years ago) but I haven't heard about it since then.

I have a list of the checkpoints for RE:1 which show the path to victory on the 59:50 run and I can't even touch it; it's definatly high class material and mkm's time is only 8 seconds worse. I can only assume that his knife only time (1:15:15) is fairly close to what can be expected to be possible.

he was saying this in the last year... he was talkin about sub 59 minutes runs.... only reason he didnt send it in... was it was burnt....

and now thinking about it... if i remember correctly... mkm does not get touched in his knife only run...

Mike Morrow has said somewhere on TG that his knife only with Jill is not nearly as perfected as his Chris RL run. so maybe your times will be lower than you expect?

I know what you're talking about now. Tyranix achieve a sub 58 minute run using the modchip on his PAL ps2 in order to play the NTSC resident evil. He did send it in though and it was 2 years ago (I still have the pm's saved at twingalaxies from back then) and the ref who judged it (Robert I believe) determined that it was actually an inferior run in every segment he compared.

It was this example that first sparked the debate on modchips effecting game times.

Perhaps I will be able to achieve a 1:15:xx run. I'm going to practice it alot and I'll post results as soon as I can.

The 1st snake fight doesn't bother me; it's the second time we meet that bugs me.

Anyways from the bit of practice I've put into this game thus far it appears that my first "goal" of a sub 1hr 20 min. knife only run is extremely easy (borderline pathetic). It's been so long since I played the game knife only that I wasn't sure how I'd do...and I'm a much better gamer now than I was over a year ago (the last time I've attempted a knife run for RE:1).

I'm not going to give too much information about my run yet as I still have alot of work to do. Regardless my new goal is to beat the current world record held by Mike Morrow of 1hr 15min and 15 seconds. As of now I believe there's a very good chance that I'm going to break it.

I don't let him bite me that's what i do.:-p There is a way to get through that area without getting bit...I don't know if it works 100% of the time but I've had enough success with it to try it each time...if it ever fails me (which so far only happened when I screwed up) I can just restart.

It's hard to explain it here...you'll just have to wait for it to be online...and then spend 36 hours to download it. Shocked

I'm working on the boss fights now. The idea is to get past the 1st Snake fight, spider fight, and Tyrant fight untouched. The plant-42 fight is an oddball fight as without the V-jolt being used (wouldn't make much sense to use the V-jolt in a speedrun now would it) the plant-42 has more tenticles and is more aggressive. In certain cases I've managed to beat him without getting hit...sometimes I get hit only once...and other times he pummels the crap out of me. Regardless it's not that troublesome of an area...however the 2nd Snake fight is easily the toughest in the game. In all I can expect to get nailed a good 7 times in this fight (having to heal twice). There's no real strategy that I've found that works well (MKM's biggest trouble spot was this fight as well...he believes he healed twice but couldn't remember exactly as it was so long ago).

As for the total run, when all is said and done, I expect to have to heal between 3 or 4 times. I'm hoping for 3 times in all (meaning I'll probably enter the Tyrant fight in either caution or danger) and I believe that with practice I'll achieve it.

i cant remember exactly...but theres a place to stand on the plant fight where you dont get hit or maybe once...

and mkm healed on the 2nd snake fight... i cant exactly explain where to stand... but its a place where his downward stike wont hit... in the inside of his bodies "U"... i remeber not getting hit here...

i always get hit by dogs thats my problem spot... dogs on the way to the gaurdhouse...

im sure you can do it with less heals... im going to try running through it again... i stopped before because speeding was pointless on psx... but now i have a more reason... tactics....

There is no spot on plant-42 where he won't hit you. It's just that there are times that you can beat him without getting hit; even several games in a row can be played without him hitting you more than once. Try fighting him 10 times in a row and see if you don't get hit any of the times.

There are areas of the snake where he'll coil up and miss you as he strikes...but he's not going to miss you all the time as he's constantly moving. MKM said he believes he healed a total of 4 times in his run.

Right now I think 3 heals is as good as I can hope for (unless I can beat the snake better as I use 2 on that fight alone). If you find a way to kill the snake without getting hit feel free to explain.

boss fight tactics is my thing... so i'll play it tonight and try to figure out what i did before... aslong as the first snake doesnt bug me and make me turn the system off...i'll be fine... and will try and help you

I'm a newbie on this forum. I am a long time RE player, and i have just discovered these speedruns. I want to give it a try.

I am amazed by the times i have read (i thought a was a good player ...).

Is it possible to find anywhere videos of knife runs ?

I can beat the 2nd snake fight in 1 heal (though at the end of the fight I'm in danger...however on the positive side the zombie in the kitchen doesn't kill you when he bites your foot when you're in Danger...so it's like a free hit). I expect 3 heals to be what I end up with though I see 2 is possible and even 1 heal is theoretically possible though you'd be in Danger from the Snake fight onwards.

Anyways I have a report on my latest achievements:

I have successfully beaten Mike Morrow's world record of 1hr 15min and 15sec. Last night I completed Jill's scenario with only the knife in a time of 1 hour 12 minutes and 58 seconds. This was a single-segment run in which I healed more often then I would have liked but I'm not giving up yet.

For any of my knife runs in this game I use the storage chest a total of 1 times.

As for what I believe to be possible:

I know for a fact that I'll eventually beat the game in under 1:12 and with enough practice I believe I could get it under 1:11. I also believe that it might be possible to achieve a knife only run in under 1 hour and 10 minutes.
