Expert Donkey Fister
im doing a rf run on impossible difficulty.

got familiar with the game and developed strategies for pretty much all tricky parts of the game.
needless to say that my run will look very similar to the one thats already on sda, however, ive found quite a few new shortcuts (mostly using geo) and hope it wont be too much of a copy run.

the time of the current medium difficulty run is a bit over an hour, im aiming for something like 1:30 or less, i cant really say how complicated things will get with HP and ammo reserves though..

running past enemies is pretty much impossible so for example ill have to pick up the tazer at the very start of the game or else i get killed instantly so yeah.. itll be more of a "pass headshots to all enemies as fast as possible" thing

segments so far:

no idea why that guy is shooting 2 rockets at once. almost restarted after i took so long to kill the 9th enemy but kept on recording and in the end it turned out quite good

seg3
coincidentally i found out that the guards start running towards the door if i shoot somewhere near them at the right time, else itd be hard making it over the bridge w/o taking some damage.
no idea why that last guard is blind like that, he will see you if you stand in front of him, i guess he just has a very limited view angle o_O

seg4

seg5
that first guy with the shotgun is a pita to dodge, he always hits you instantly taking like half your hp

seg6
the first guard is invincible until a few seconds after your 2 mates have died, had to restart lotsa times to not get hit by him until hes vulnerable

skipping the boss fight by tunnelling saves about 10-20 secs

i love the sniper in this game, reminds me of the days when quickscoping was still possible in css

seg18
the segment i enjoyed the most so far, i can waste all my ammo as im loosing my weapons a few segments later anyway.
it has a bit of everything, many enemies, all kinda weapons being used and a little geo mod shortcut that saves around 10 secs.
the first 2 pistol shots are for emeny intimidation, if theres and enemy around a corner which hits you instantly in the head almost everytime, i found that gunsound makes them loose it.
the few rounds i shoot after i killed both guards is to intimidate an npc who would else stand right in the spot where i want to geo.

took me a bit to find a fast and secure way to exit the sub w/o getting blasted into pieces, what im doing is jumping and enter/exiting the sub rapidly, by doing this i eventually end up jumping away from the sub so i dont have to use the ladder, i looks quite buggered i know.
2 things might cause some suspicion, first theres a red "damage taken" screen indication even though im not hurt and afterwards the ladder doesnt make any noise as i grab on to it, maybe cause eos is talking.
the damage indication is shared with vehicles, i think. if im in the sub and it takes a hit i get the indication in blue, when i leave the sub its still there but turns red, havent tested it but i dont have to verify my own run, do i

Thread title:
Speed is everything!
I am iterested because I love this game!
I wish you good luck and a good time! Wink
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Does this mean you not up for running RF2 anymore? I guess I'll have to finish it on my own Tongue

I would definately watch this run, I just downloaded the one already on SDA and will watch that soon. I'd actually be keen to have a go at doing this run, first I'd need to buy the game again ofcourse lol, I haven't played it for a couple of years.
I have no solution, but i admire the problem.
Okay, this one's yours.
I've taken a look at the first few levels on impossible and i can confirm what you said, running past enemies isn't possible. But i also thought that the difficulty wasn't as hard as it sounds. With some well-placed headshots you can easily survive.

I'm not an expert on this game, but to me it seemed like the pistol became more accurate when putting up the silencer, while its damage output decreased. That could be something to consider, since you need to deliver a bunch of aimed shots and without the silencer the pistol isn't that accurate.

Anyways, good luck!
Expert Donkey Fister
yeah its far away from impossible, it can get tricky in some of the last levels though (merc base..)

i didnt notice any difference in accuracy while using it with silencer, ive just tested again after reading your post but to me it seems exactly the same, no matter how many series of shots i fire

it doesnt matter that much anyway, i got all the early segments done already so i wont need to pistol snipe anymore (and im glad cause it blows)

y3llow: i wrote in the rf2 thread that i dont wanna run it cause the game is way too linear for my taste, i couldnt find a single geo mod shortcut :/

i dont like the game in general, it seems so mainstream'ish to me, just doesnt have the feel that the first one had. gonna have a look at your vids though Smiley
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Heh fair enough, there's still some fun things to do though, like jumping down the missle silo lol.
I agree the game has nothing on the first one, and everything if far to limiting, even dual wielding doesn't make up for it.
Ahh well, I'll see if I can finish it seeing as I've started it anyways.
Expert Donkey Fister
got 8 segments so far, burned them to dvd but my pc's dvd drive cant read unfinalized discs so ill wait till i have a few more segments done (else id just waste dvd space)

about RF2, one thing ive tested is if you can go faster by bouncing off of walls, didnt do a timed test so i cant say, i think it isnt really faster than running normally but maybe you can jump larger gaps with this, dunno..
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Yea it's got annoying bounce back physics when you try to jump onto stuff etc etc, could be used, I'll check it out.

Also I'm going to buy Red Faction 1. Partly because it's a great game, I also want to have a go at beating the current run time that's up on SDA, and possibly have a go at impossible.
I found a couple of extra tricks that I think weren't used in the run, although I was playin on ps2, so we'll have to find out eh.
I have no solution, but i admire the problem.
Why don't you continue running RF2 y3llow? It's not a bad game and it could still be interesting to run. And l2ebel seems  so be the right guy for doing the impossible run. Of course you could try to improve some RF1 runs later.

l2ebel, buy DVD-RWs. They save lives.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Mleh we'll see, I've played it over so many times that I can't get into it now cause there's nothing to improve on. Hopefully I can get it done in my holidays.
Mum's the word.

excuse me for recording the game only on 800x600 but on higher resolutions im having a hard time to see the crosshair (its really thin)

anyway, got the first 8 up:

im showing the options screen before every save to make verification a bit easier since the game difficulty can be changed anytime

recorded up to segment 17 tonight, gonna convert and upload tomorrow i suppose
Speed is everything!
Very nicely done! Shocked
Awesome! Grin

In segment 2 where the that guy shooted 2 rockets at once, I think he sooted two rockets bacause you've saved the game after he had shooted one and then when you've loaded he sooted the second.

And you've written the wrong link to segment 8.
You've written http://speeddemosarchive.com/yabb/]http://files.filefront.com/RFimp08avi/;7677410;/fileinfo.html

I wish you good luck for the next great segments!

im kinda confused atm:

Quote:
Red Faction - Impossible - $200

Requirements
- Beat Red Faction on Impossible using the latest version.
- First person to complete this run collects the bounty.
- A maximum of 50 segments is allowed. Points where the loading screen occurs count as a segment.

im now 1/3 through the game and have 25 segments already, surely the game has more than only 50 loading screens? i need to ask Pweisger before i can continue..

I have no solution, but i admire the problem.
Err.. you do know that you don't need to start a new segment after each loading screen?
You should probably restart your run with longer segments. That way you can use shorter segments at the end of the run. Also, with longer segments the run will be much more interesting. How about ~3-5 minutes per segment? Of course you could also try to continue the run with longer segments.

You haven't read the whole text: Points where the loading screen occurs count as a segment.

Not by SDA rules they don't. It seems really arbitrary that pweisger would set it up so that loading points count as segments, when load times are removed when timing PC runs and it takes at least 5 seconds which is counted to save each time. Talk to him about it, because it is definately going to waste some time saving at each load point like that.
Expert Donkey Fister
yeah it was annoying me too, especially when theres segments where i only need to run..

oh and wasnt that a 0.5 second penalty for each save? 5 seems a bit much

i can only hope pweisger is gonna show up soonish cause im hella bored
Speed is everything!
I've looked it up and the game has exactly 66 levels.

Think of how long it takes you to press menu-save-are you sure-yes or whatever it is. That is definately at least 4 or 5 seconds. the 1 second penalty only applies to games that have quicksave shortcuts(obviously if this game has it, use it).

Sda timing for pc runs eliminates load times, but the timing goes from the moment of first control to the moment you confirm your save (unless there is an in game timer). i know this 100% for sure because I timed part of the GTA3 100% run and that was the rule i was supposed to follow.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Just out of curiousity, if the timer starts when you first gain control, does it mean full control? In RF2 at the very start your sitting in a helicopter thing and you can look around, but not move or shoot or anything, like in fear, is that counted as having control?

I think not. For example in the Half-Life run the timing starts after the train drive.

wth someone told me timing would stop when i hit esc

doesnt make much sense to me to time how long it takes for someone to write a save name..

do you happen to have a link to a topic where all these rules are listed? id like to have a read cause everyones telling me different things
Speed is everything!
Here are all rules listed. Wink
Expert Donkey Fister
"timing stops at the first system-dependent activity. Usually this is the actual saving."

looks like ill be using quicksave from now on, even though its messy cause i like to back up my saves

the rules need an update as they dont state anything about time penalties when saving
