Hi guys,

I am thinking of taking on this game as a speedrun project. Red Alert 2 is my favourite game of all time and I was/am pretty good at it (my best was rank #9 on the 1v1 ladder and in the top 3 on the clan ladder multiple times, all back when the game was competitive).

I'm an Allied player at heart so I'd start with that campaign, and am likely to complete the Soviet campaign too. I'll probably do Yuri's Revenge, too.

Obviously I would play the game on the hardest and fastest settings, but if I recall correctly, you can somehow manually increase the game speed of the campaign so it can then be changed in a similar way to how you can in multiplayer games (the settings are something like slow --> normal --> fast --> faster --> fastest). I assume the campaign is by default on "normal" and was wondering whether I should play at the default speed, or look into altering the game so I can play it at a faster speed. For instance, at the menu screen if you type "HIRES" you can then change your resolution to higher than is allowed by default. I think this is similar to how the campaign speed can be changed. Otherwise, it may require altering the target box of the RA2 file (much like how you add -win to play in windowed mode) to allow one to increase the game speed.

What I'd like to know is whether this would be allowed, or whether such a thing would be refused?

Also, I've had a brief look on youtube for some speedrun videos but haven't found an awful lot with much substance. Anything I do find seems to have pretty sloppy execution, although the tactics themselves may well be solid. I cannot say as I didn't watch them enough to judge critically. If anyone has any info/vids etc I'd be interesting in taking a look. Otherwise I'm more than happy to start from scratch and working on the planning.

Anyway, is there much interest in this? Smiley

When in doubt, use explosives.
I would watch the shit out of this run. Behind you all the way, bro!

I am honestly not sure about the speed switch (I assume you're talking about something similar to like a command line switch that's already built-in for those who found it and want to use it) so it's best to let the admins have a say in it, because I'm not entirely sure if it counts as modding or not. If nothing else, I think it might count as a separate category.

However, if the faster game speed is also reflected on the in-game timer (I think there was such a thing?) then it might not make a difference.

ChickenB0h BOH! :D
yeah i would watch that game speedruned too...

i think if there is in-game timer(i don't remember if there is one in RA2) and this speed slider affects the timer aswell you can probably move it to whatever you like, but if you have to count time manually then idk ask Mike or someone :D. as i recall there always was timer in C&C games and it counted "in-game" time so you probably can change it to faster...
Thanks for the responses. I'm happy to see there is some interest :D!

Yes there is a timer in-game. At the end of each mission you get shown your time. The way the game speed operates is that units/buildings construct and travel quicker. By default you don't have the option to change this in the campaign, but as Chokehold said, it can be increased using a command line or something similar.

If I did the exact same process on game speed normal (ie, build power plant, then barracks) and fastest, I'm pretty sure the game timer would be much less for the fastest settings. This would mean times wouldn't be comparable.

I'll do some research on, and ask the admins like you guys suggested.

Thanks! I'll post any updates, too!

I figured I'd install it myself and double-check. So brace yourselves, the edits are coming.

Also, I think you're thinking of the -SPEEDCONTROL switch. Smiley
Check out previous threads before starting a run of this. There has been a run submitted before and rejected due to not being good enough. I also recall reading that the post-mission timer is broken and simply doesn't reflect the time taken on a mission, that the game isn't suitable for manual timing either because the game speed varies due to lag (notably running faster if you position the camera over shroud), and that the only fair way to time it is to install a timer mod that shows a timer constantly during each mission. I may be misremembering these points though, so I suggest doing some research.

Regardless, I'm interested.
I would also love to see a speedrun of this game! I'm thinking of running the first Red Alert myself Smiley From someone that experienced in the online play like you, I'm sure it will turn out great.

Just a question... do you intend to do individual levels or single segment?

Yes, this is exactly what I was trying to remember! Thank you.

Thanks for your info ExplodingCabbage. I had a read through the submitted run and saw it was mainly rejected due to execution. I didn't see any mention of timing issues, although you may well be correct in what you say. I will have to do some experimenting to find out.

The way you progress through each level kind of lends itself towards doing individual levels, although I would be sure to submit a complete run of every level. However, I could also do a single segment attempt, although I don't think there would be much variance in comparison to doing individual levels (probably just more mistakes prone to happen and little or no change in tactics).

Ahhh, the wonderful search feature.

Yup, in the end the in-game timer seemed to be very odd and a guy made a timer mod which was accepted by SDA to be used. Unfortunately me and rooster lost interest in the project...
So yeah, read that thread, and go for it! Smiley

EDIT: I don't seem to have the runs anymore Sad

Yeah no, I think only individual levels should be posted, and separately too. I'd watch a single segment too, although I dunno how that would even be timed.

Like ExplodingCabbage mentions, the game speeds up tremendously when hovering over shroud. It's like cutting the framerate some slack. Smiley

EDIT: Spelling error. I need a new keyboard.
Yeah, ILs are the way to go. Just remember that you need to complete all missions in a campaign to be able to submit, since it's a new game on SDA.

I would very much want to see this run. I'll have to find videos on YouTube, but I remember someone making quite a few speedruns of the game in hardest/fastest difficulty.

Found the videos, here's one of them:

This guy has 9 videos, mainly for the soviets, so this may help you out. Best of luck!
Not sure if ChristosOwen is still running this game but does anyone have the in-game timer mod? The old link is broken.

It seems I still do have some runs on my USB-HDD. 6 Allied runs (Level 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 12). Don't know if they're outdated or anything, could upload if need be.

The timer mod is attached.

Sure, why not. I will gather a list of all the runs done so far, I'm curious to see how many missions are missing for a complete table. Will try to run a bit myself, but I'm not very good at this game.
I've uploaded them, mind your eardrums for some Wink

Allied 01 "Lone Guardian"
Allied 03 "Hail to the Chief"
Allied 04 "Last Chance"
Allied 05 "Dark Night"
Allied 07 "Deep Sea"
Allied 12 "Chrono Storm"
Here's the list, with video records from YT as well (Hard difficulty). I see none of them use the in-game timer, so I suppose they all need to be updated. I tested Soviet 01... and well, it's an old game Tongue The pathing in this game is horrible, even if you babysit the units. If there are more people interested in finishing this project, I could probably speedrun a few missions, but I wouldn't stand doing tons of them.

Very nice. In Allied 01 he didn't blow up those dreadnaughts in the beginning but just simply ran past them with Tania immediately to the Allied base, I wonder why I never tried that myself... Odd. He also sold the border thing at the bottom of the Allied base, I never knew that was possible Cheesy
I haven't watched more than Soviet 01 and Allied 01 yet but it seems he knows very well what he's doing, I'm curious what he comes up with in the other levels.

Fantastic runs.
Allied 2 seemed a bit slow towards the end, but otherwise I enjoyed the allied missions. Some inventive strats and really neatly done.
Soviets... Holy. That was unexpectedly awesome. Mission 12 rocketeer spam was new instead of Kirovs and way faster.

Some of those levels I couldn't believe you got the winning shot right as your units died. You had some guts to pull these in SS.

Please redo with the SDA timer posted above and submit Smiley
