Salazaar can't be killed with the knife along other bosses i assume. (Been a while since i last played it) Also breaking Ashley free from the locks needs a gun and other areas such as moving the planks of wood in the tower.
If could still be done though, excluding areas where a weapon is needed. Would still be very impressive.
What WOULD a minimum percentage run entail? If using a handgun is at any time REQUIRED (Which it is in several places like Salazar's Castle when Ashley is turning cranks and such) then using it at any point wouldn't count against the player. I think no upgrades at ALL (Including yellow herbs, tatical vest, brief cases, weapons) or any optional but findable weapons like the Broken Butterfly would count under that. Of course, ammo conservation would be a MAJOR theme, even more so than in an Any % run due to the fact you're limited to only one type of ammo. Green and red herbs should be allowed though, they have no permenant effect on Leon's stats.
Low percent run, well I've done a run without using the Merchant on Professional, maybe I could do a low percent run, just the handgun, no upgrades, no other weapons, etc. Would grenades be allowed though?
Use knife only except where long range is required. Then use the un-upgraded handgun, minimum number of bullets. In one case that doesn't work... the regenerator holding the key to ashley's cell. Buy a rocket launcher, or take the one in the glass case and save it for then.
Can't the regenerator with the card key be killed with handgun bullets? I know 16 fully-upgraded striker bullets will kill it.
There's gotta be a way to get a swipe in on it with the knife somehow. Maybe after you dodge the attack, you could run behind it and get a swipe in. Or use the window in the next room to your advantage.
I would be very impressed with a knife-only run. But I doubt it's feasible.
How would you do the double-garrador room with just a knife? And Verdugo? He's just so quick.
Also I think the melting room with the swinging ball would be interesting with just a knife.
Also, some places where you'd need to use a gun would be: -setting off the traps in the swamp -on the cable cars -with the trucks (in 2-3 and 5-x) -with the catapults (the one that fires on the lever should be allowed) -obviously, Ashley turning the cranks -probably the red zealot with the gallery key -(freeing and protecting Ashley) -the dragon room -getting the 2 cultists on the drilling machine -the knights' room (I don't know how you could get the 2nd three plagas with the knife, as they can kill you in one hit.) It would be impressive though. -and a lot of others...
All you have to do is shoot the thingys inside the regenerator to kill it, right? So why wouldn't the basic handgun work for that. It'd be tough guessing where they are and usually very ammo consuming but possible i would of thought.
I did start a low% run some time ago. If i remember well i took 45 minutes to get to the castle, but i just gave up after that because it was just getting ridiculous. I took something like 10 minutes to kill the garrador with only the knife (and this was on normal).
Good luck with your run, i'll be really impressed if you can pull it off on pro
Well I can't do it if I have to kill the Iron Maiden with an unupgraded handgun and a knife. You really can't hit it as it goes over the window because it jumps while lying down.
I'm going to try the run, just not for speed right now, and I'll come back if I think I could do a decent run on it.
The one who went by 3 letters of the alphabet and never gave his real name (did some metroid prime runs, maybe you know who i mean) claims to have done what I listed on pro mode.
If you're talking about Kip, I'd believe he can do it. I think that's like Michael Jordan playing video games and he doesn't want to give his name. That would be awesome to watch.
I found out that the 3 knights room with a knife is actually harder on the first 3 knights than the 2nd three. Those plagas just keep whipping around. (The part of the plagas that swings around can be hit for damage though, I believe.) I myself would consider a flash grenade to be ok there.
And Radix said you could use the rocket launcher on the regenerator.
Woody: According to the programming, I don't think the plagas 'exist' unless you equip the infra-red scope.
A good thing about doing a low-percentage run: you'll save 8-10 seconds by not having to go into the house to get the shotgun.
So if we do a knife run, do we start it as a 'new game' or a 'load game.' (ie. with healing items ready.)
I was doing a knife run tonight and it was really fun. I only did it up to the cabin fight. But I think it was the fastest cabin fight I've ever seen (barring chicago typewriter and RL). I just stayed at one window and knifed them as they tried to come in and Luis shot them all. I have no idea why it was so fast. I seriously thought I was about half-way through when it ended. Anyways, it was really easy.
And el gigante wasn't that bad at all. There are 3 trees that you can hang around, and you can get a lot of extra hits in with the knife while he's pulling them out, and an easy dodge, then some more hits. Also, you can hit -both- of his legs at once for double damage. Once I figured that strategy out, I didn't take much damage at all.
Also, the knife should be required on the cable cars (except for the 2 guys on the left, who would jump on the car and knock it down), because you can knock away the axes with the knife.
Also the cable car in 2-3 (knocking away the axes with the knife.)
Someone on gamefaqs said they did a knife-only run and killed the regenerator with the card key through the window. I haven't done that part with a knife yet, but my best guess is that he wouldn't be able to grab you through the window (as with other ganados) and you can knife him then. I could be wrong though.
For the healing items, that would be for a knife-only run versus a low-% run.
Also with low-percentage, does that include no yellow herbs? (sorry I'm new to speedrunning.)
"knife run" is just the common term for what you do in Reisdent Evil for what SDA calls low% in a generic sense.
The goal would be to minimize both bullets used and health used. Yellow herbs would be off limits. F.aid sprays and green/red herbs are OK, but you'd want to minimize them. With low%, collecting fewer items but going slower makes a better run!
Okay, then how would competing runs be judged? Say runner A used a rocket where runner B didn't, but B used 3 first aid sprays more than A. Wait, I know! Add up the sell value of everything the runner used. Not sure if this is too balanced, but it's quantifiable (sp?).
