It's time to use the HEALING TOUCH
Has anyone tried this game? I'm planning a run for the future but I realized I know very little about this game save for playing the PC version when I was younger. If anyone knows of good strategies/tips/playing techniques, has a great guide to completing this or if any videos already exist that'd be appreciated.

Aren't you making a TAS run of this?
It's time to use the HEALING TOUCH
yeah I will in the future, and I'm familiar with the game but not with where everything is, and I'd like a good reference/s for when I eventually start it

I don't think there has been a thread for this before so here's the gamefaqs guide for it.

Thanks

now I just need to find either an Adaptoid Nintendo 64 USB to PC Adapter or figure out Nitsuja's TAS plugin, I got the plugin into the right directory but the analog stick screen doesn't show up.

You do realize that such a run wouldn't be accepted on SDA, right?

of course, I was just curious if anyone here had any familiarity with the game and could offer help.

And quite frankly, this game is nigh impossible to do single segment, a 4-5 hour run where it is highly likely to miss a few/many Lums. A segmented run might be possible, if anyone wants to try individual levels while I make my TAS and contribute ideas/tactics that'd be fun

You don't need every Lum. You need less than half of them (I don't know the exact requirements). Also, if you skip all the cutscenes, it'd probably be closer to three hours, not four or five.

EDIT: I have some videos up, BTW:

Razorbeard Battle
The Iron Mountains

Thanks, those vids are nice, I don't know what cutscenes are skippable and what's not but any cutscenes requiring input will be skipepd very fast. (Frame Advance.)  I'm pretty sure a lot of N64 games have skippable cutscenes once you've played the game before (StarFox 64 for example) but not this game, as evident by the 3 minute introduction. I'll look into the minimum requirement of Lums and make it any% to save time, and in the very far future maybe 100%.

Edit: Hmm, I can't quite find the minimum requirement... Hopefully there's a minimalist walkthrough but so far all I can find are full guides, none with Lum requirement to procede to the next level... I'll keep looking

When you find the minimums for each Teensy door thing, post them here. They'll be hella useful if anyone decides to do a run. Smiley
Good luck making the run. This was one of my favorite N64 games, and I've been waiting to see a run of it Smiley

I can't find them myself  :-[ I tried emailing all the peeps who wrote FAQ's but no success whatsoever. I might just do 100% if I cannot find it, and I'll try to find a way to post the minimum required Lums to procede to the next level as I play them.

Well, what I would do is get very few, and if it's not enough, get ten more. Just keep doing that until you find the range of 10 Lums required. After that, narrow it down to the exact number.

Alright, I've got the first practice glade done so at this point it's not too late to do any% or 100%. Though the any% tactic you described would take a phenomenal amount of rerecords to go to replay every level many times- this is TAS, and I don't have a controller to plug into my computer so I can't do fast test runs of each level over and over until I find the minimum number of Lums. Too bad the Teensy's at the end don't say what the required amoiunt of Lums are like they do in the practice glade, that'd make it very easy.

One of the guides on GameFAQs that I looked at has amounts in there (100, 300, 475, 550), but I wouldn't trust it... Instead, get 99, 299, 474, and 549, and if those aren't enough for each door, get one more and hope it works. After that, use my other method.

Out of curiosity which guide?

First on the list.

Aha, I thought there was a level per level requirement but I guess not. My thinking is the numbers are legit, he's a Walkthrough author and he must've done research into it. So any% it is, now on to the extremely difficult Lum planning. Just the easiest ones to get, if anyone remembers the game well enough to know which ones are easiest that'd be great.

I would check his numbers just to make sure. You wouldn't want to do your run and have someone say, "hey, you got an extra 25 Lums there..." Plus, you really don't have to put a lot of research into a game to write an FAQ; you can skimp by some of the time.

As for which Lums to get, you'll obviously want to get the ones that are along your way as often as possible. I'm not sure about specific ones, though.

EDIT: Don't worry about barely meeting the Lum requirement each time; instead, consider the areas without regard to each Lum door, then worry about the Lum doors later.

Alright thanks for all help. I'll be working on this as well as 3 other runs at the same time (I multitask like that) and if anyone wants to follow my progress give me a PM and I'll send the files and stuff needed to watch. Hopefully I can also record AVI's. And of course I'll be posting my progress here and asking for help when needed.
I rented this game a few years ago, so I don't remember enough to provide any help or tips.  But I would greatly enjoy seeing a speedrun of it.

The only "tip" I can think of to give you is that I noticed the framerate is smoother (and faster???) if you choose the low-resolution option.

Oh yeah, great videos, Manocheese!

Positive? I'm starting a second run from scratch to see if indeed setitng it to low resolution helps, it doesn't even lose 1/2 a second in the menu to switch to Low Res, so we'll see
Speed Running Joy-bringer
I got a question I'm wodering. Is there any major differences between the Dreamcast version and the N64 version (like loading times, level changes etcetera)?

I was thinking of doing a run on this game myself. I remember playing through this recently and thought about it, but I still have the other game I'm working on.
Existence as you know it is over
From wikipedia: "Entitled Rayman 2: The Great Escape, these three versions are very similar. A few of the differences are: The Dreamcast version has several minigames, the Playstation version had the characters to talk english instead of blabber, and numerous changes have been made to the world map and final battle across these versions."
It's time to use the HEALING TOUCH
yeah not a lot of differences at all, I'm using the N64 version, even though I played the PC version when I was younger.
