I played around in the fire room of the Canopy with moon jump. Going around the outside of the room (i.e. going to the right before you enter) seems impossible; there's a big invisible wall blocking your way. Going around the left side of the fire also seems impossible because the fire is too big. Going around the right side (while inside the room) seems somewhat more plausible, but the gap and the fire are still pretty big. Even if you touch the green lum and death warp, you'll spawn inside the fire, so you get caught in a loop of respawning and dying until you get a game over. The only way I can see this trick happening is as follows:

1. Get the pirate to spawn.
2. Kill him from afar.
3. Get close enough to start the cutscene.

I've confirmed that the last two steps are possible. Once the pirate spawns, it's pretty easy to bounce shots toward him and kill him. You can then start the cutscene by jumping toward the wall on the right side of the fire. The only thing that remains is getting the pirate to spawn in the first place. I'll try it out.

Another thing I noticed is that there doesn't appear to be a loading zone to leave the room. It seems the only way out is through the cutscene.

Quote from luke100:
Not hitting, but not using first-person. If you're quick enough and don't let the pirate approach you, Rayman always does auto-target the switch, yes, but you must see it being hit. Does that happen consistently when you don't use first-person?

Yes, this happens consistently when I don't use first person. While I am running towards the gate as the shot is going to the switch, the camera is facing towards the switch, so I think that is why the game registers the switch as being hit.

Cheese, thanks for testing the fire room. I'm not sure how we can reach the trigger point for the pirate to spawn. It's a challenge getting to the green lum and I don't see how we can get into the tunnel where the pirate is. Maybe if we jumped into the hall in the wall in the fire room and float towards the pirate's trigger point.

In other news, I came across this weird glitch on the pc version. During the cutscene where you break your first cage, I loaded up the same file to restart my run. When I came to the Woods of Light in my next attempt, this happened.

edit: Fire Room Skip Theory

If only there was a way to hit the pirate while out-of-bounds. >_<
Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
LOL at Globox dancing in the fire. Unfortunately, I don't think there's anything solid down there to bounce shots off of. The pirate is probably too high up for auto-aim to target him.

Our last hope would be to jump over the fire on the right side.

I have a question regarding timing runs for this game. Does timing start on the first frame you have control of Rayman and end on the first frame you destroy Razorbeard?

Yes.

Here is a neat timesaver in the Sanctuary of Fire and Stone that saves 5 seconds. It skips watching the wheel turn cutscene as you progress to the blue orb area. Not sure if it is possible on N64. I found this during my most recent run.

Wheel Turn Cutscene Skip

Also, here is a strategy I use for the pirate in the Precipice. Basically you can get more distance than spamming the shoot button which can create some lag on n64. This strategy is a few seconds faster than spamming shoot or charging up a super shot. There is also a chance for a cannonball to hit him if he is running close enough to you.

Precipice Pirate Strategy

I improved my pb to 2:16:12. Still had a lot of deaths. Everything was going great until I died 3 times on the Cave of Bad Dreams Boss. I also died 3 times in the Iron Mountain, 2 times in the prison ship, 2 times in the Precipice…. and so on. I'm getting better though!
Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
The first one is interesting. I suspect it's PC-only, though, since the cutscenes work differently on PC. For the Precipice miniboss, it does seem faster to shoot less, if only because moving while holding Z is slower than regular running.

Good job on your runs so far. I'm sure your time will go down if you keep playing.

I was holding to the right while I went through the slide on the first trick. There is no load screen when you enter from the boss area back to the lava fall on PC, so I think this is why this trick is only possible on PC. You can also move while coming out of the slide. I don't think you can move while coming out on the N64.

Thanks, they definitely will improve. Once I get a new tv sometime in the next couple weeks, I will begin practicing on the n64. Marshes is way easier on PC then it is on N64. When you crouch while skiing, you can bust through the propellor bombs without detaching from Sam. The lag also makes the area more difficult along with other places on N64. It will be quite an adjustment but it's manageable.

Tomb of the Ancients Pirate Strategy

Here is a nice strategy for 100% runs. Maybe you already knew about this cheese, but I decided to make a video of it. This would be a nice any% back-up lum strategy if you are running low in a run. It takes 15 seconds to get the ten lums in the cage with this strat. I don't think this trick would be ideal cause all the lums I get in any% are directly in my path. I skip all the detours in my current route, so I don't think this strategy can be implemented. Here is what I have so far. I believe this would be the fastest lum collection with no detours. This is the n64 route btw...

Woods of Light: 5
Fairy Glade: 20
Marshes: 49
Bayou: 49
Sanctuary Water/Ice: use orb skip, 41
Menhir Hills 1: 17
Cave of Bad Dreams: 48, plus 1 from marshes
Menhir Hills 2: 8
Canopy: use globox text skip, use flower skip 41
Whale Bay: use walk underwater trick, 33
Sanctuary Stone/Fire: 11
Echoing Caves: grab 5 lums in beginning, 34
Precipice: 49
Top of the World: 46
Sanctuary Rock/Lava: 48
Beneath Rock/Lava: skip cage tunnel,  37
Tomb of the Ancients: 13, or whatever amount you need

Backup lums
Menhir Hills: 1, behind busted door
Cave of Bad Dreams: 2, on platforms before orange orb
Canopy: 2, near first pirate, near fallen pole
Sanctuary Stone/Fire: 1, in lava fall section before rotating wheel
Echoing Caves: 5 near beginning
Top of the World: 2, near the keg section
Tomb of the Ancients: 16, six around perimeter of first switch, ten in cage in pirate room
Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
Nice strategy. I have the golden fists there in 100%, though, so he dies with one charge shot plus one regular shot, which seems faster than using barrels. But the barrel strategy may be useful in any%. Also, your spot for throwing the barrel is a little faster than mine; I make the throw from just below the left side of the bottom of the stairs. That spot works pretty much every time, but I'll have to test your spot.

This is very interesting I like this route, there are a few things to question though,

Cave of bad dream: Are you skipping the lum in the top right corner of the climbable wall? http://gyazo.com/f4572994ba9f8067ad456bd963e6cf6c (Click mp4) I also skip the lum to the left, but if you swing more left I think it would be worth it.

Tomb of the Ancients: the 3 lums you would grab seems very slow there, they are great back up lums but idk about being in the route.

I find it pretty cool you were able to skip the wind tunnel 10 lums and the Whale bay 12 lums though, good job

Mano: Ah, I forgot about the golden fists in the optional area. (optional for any%) That spot is pretty consistent for me. You may be able to hit the door from even further back, I haven't tested it yet.

Yoshi: Yes, I do skip the lum on the top right of the wall but I grab the lum on the left by swinging towards it. Also, those 3 lums are very slow in tomb of the ancients I agree. There are an extra 2 in echoing caves you can grab that have a 3 second detour right before the second barrel after you break the first cage. We could also pick up an extra lum on the net that is to the left of the pirate in the second flying barrel section of echoing caves. This lum route is very precise but we do have some backup lums to work with.

Btw, when do you stream? I saw you recently recorded a pb and wanted to catch you when you run this game again.

I will be ordering my tv and easy-cap (i lost my old capture card while moving >_<) sometime this month so I can begin running on n64! Smiley

Hopefully your internet will be done crapping tonight.

I updated the lum route. It seems I already included that lum on the net in the Echoing Caves I was talking about next to the pirate. I also added another lum in the Canopy I forgot about. So I added 2 lums to the echoing caves and 1 lum in the Canopy. This excludes the 3 lums along the perimeter of the first switch in tomb of the ancients.

I also included some backup lums under the route in only levels I feel will be optimal. When it comes down to it, the tomb of the ancients is where you will find the most backup lums. There will be 16 backup lums including the 10 in the cage in the pirate room. I say as of right now, this route is pretty well optimized. Now, we need to execute.
Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
For the golden fists in 100%, this is what I'm doing. After Top of the World, I beat Rock & Lava and Beneath Rock & Lava. Then I go back to Rock & Lava and do Walk of Power, giving me full golden fists. Then I do Tomb of the Ancients. This route adds a few seconds of Hall of Doors navigation, but it saves much more than that in Tomb of the Ancients. The golden fists save time in the 1000th lum area, the last pirate battle, and the Clark battle.

Here is a timesaver for the 1000th lum that skips the second round of pirates. There is an area that is submerged out of the swamp that you can jump on. This probably would not be worth it since it's rather risky for a single segment and you would have a higher chance of loosing your golden fists. I played on emulator, if someone could confirm this on console that would be great.

edit: Here is a strategy to skip fighting the sleeping pirate in whale bay. I can consistently get this on emulator but it can be risky.

Btw, does anyone know if there is a way to save after completing a level without having the game send you back to the woods of light on the next time you load up the file? This happens on PC to me, but maybe it's different on n64, I don't remember.
Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
Nice stuff. I'll try that 1000th lum trick soon. On N64, you load at the same place you saved.

I did a 2:38:42 today. There were no deaths, but I lost time in other ways. It's hard to say how much I lost, but sub-2:38 is definitely possible. I think that'll be my goal for now.

Awesome looking forward to the final run! Sounds like you are getting close to something that can be submitted. Smiley

I was talking to CloakedYoshi and we discovered my timing for the walk underwater trick in Whale Bay was inaccurate. It's only a couple seconds faster if that to skip those 12 lums in Whale Bay. Basically, it would not be worth it to use that trick. So now, I have updated my lum route again!

Woods of Light: 5
Fairy Glade: 20
Marshes: 49
Bayou: 49
Sanctuary Water/Ice: use orb skip, 41
Menhir Hills 1: 17
Cave of Bad Dreams: 49, plus 1 from marshes
Menhir Hills 2: 8
Canopy: use globox text skip, use flower skip 40
Whale Bay: 45
Sanctuary Stone/Fire: 11
Echoing Caves: 27
Precipice: 49
Top of the World: 46
Sanctuary Rock/Lava: 48
Beneath Rock/Lava: skip cage tunnel,  32
Tomb of the Ancients: 13, or whatever amount you need

Backup lums
Menhir Hills: 1, behind busted door
Cave of Bad Dreams: 1, on webbings
Canopy: 8, six on webbings, one near first pirate, one near fallen pole
Echoing Caves: 6, five near beginning, one on net near pirate
Top of the World: 2, near the keg section
Beneath Rock/Lava: 5, before breakable floor
Tomb of the Ancients: 16, six around perimeter of first switch, ten in cage in pirate room
@Unreal: you have to save while in the Hall of Doors. Not while exiting the level, but when you are actually about to choose it. Press Escape and save. Then it should put you back where you left off in the Hall of Doors. Kinda dumb, I know.
Daily Speedrun Streamer
This seems weird why am I only coming up with 32 lums instead of 37 for under Sanct. of R & L, skipping the the 2 cage 10 lums, Also one thing realized now is when skipping those ten, it allows you to pick up an extra free lum you wouldnt normally be able to get! so its only skipping 9 lums
Edit history:
Manocheese: 2014-04-02 11:06:31 pm
Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
Maybe the difference is the five lums above the floor you have to break? They seem borderline. If you get them fast, I think they take about five seconds, but they can take a little longer if the fuzzballs don't cooperate.

Yoshi, I grab the 5 lums mano is talking about. I skipped the 6 lums on the webs in the canopy, so I needed to pick up some more lums else where.  If the fuzz balls don't cooperate that's a 10 second detour which is the same amount of time to get the 6 lums in canopy. What I usually do for the 5 lum in beneath rock and lava is I charge up a shot just outside the fuzzball trigger zone so I can break the floor without killing any fuzzballs. That trigger is right after the yellow lum, so I hover where the yellow lum is and proceed forward after I break the floor. I can do this pretty consistently so I grab those lums instead of the canopy lums.

Edit: So I did some timing.

Extra 5 in beneath rock: 13
beneath rock no 5 lum: 6
Canopy extra 5 on webs: 9

Basically, if I get the 5 lum in beneath rock/lava and the fuzz balls cooperate, I can save like 2 seconds. >_> In the long run it is safer to get the lums on the webs in the Canopy compared to the 5 in beneath rock/lava. I could use that 5 lum as a backup lum.
Daily Speedrun Streamer
Ok then Im finalizing my lum route as the same as your except that I get that 5 lum aswell in under sanct R & L,
and that allows me to cut a few stragglers I find slow,
Cave of bad dreams: 1 lum (On snakes platforms)
Echoing caves: 2 (after first barrel, on netting, is the two Im assuming you grab)
Top of the world: 1 lum (last room, on top of the box, in far right corner)
Under Sanct R & L: 1 lum (flying part before floor break, there are two lums on platforms, on is left and one is to the right, I avoid the right one)

These five lums should add up to a fair bit more than the 5 lum by the floor break, but Id like ot hear your opinions aswell.

If the fuzz balls don't cooperate that could cost you close to 20 seconds total for that 5 lum in beneath rock/lava. Also I grab the 2 lums that are behind the first cage in Echoing Caves. If you have seen luke's pb, those are the two lums he grabs. I have decided not to grab those 5 lums in beneath Rock/lava cause of the risk of the fuzz balls not cooperating. I have my final route above. Those are lums you decided to cut are a good choice. You got me thinking of cutting them as well. It's hard to say if it is faster to get that 5 lum in beneath rock/lava or not. Out of the ones you cut, how much time do you think could be saved? Have you timed it? I think it's finally getting to the point where we can decide on the most optimal lum route.

Also, I ordered my capture card and tv and everything should be here next week! Cheesy
