----------------------------------

Original post by spikevegeta:

Hey, finished up and sent in my Kingdom Hearts 2 run, so this is the next run I seriously want to get started. I've played through it twice in the last few weeks to remind myself of all the different levels in the game, and to get a rough outline of 550 Lums to collect throughout the run.

From what I can tell, a Single Segment run is just about impossible unless "deaths" are excepted(Not full deaths, just whenever Rayman falls or gets hit by certain enemies and has to go back a little bit in the level). If not then I'd like to do an any% in about 15 segments or so with no deaths.

The way the four doors work is you need a certain amount of lums for each of them,

Level 5: 100
Level 10: 300
Level 15: 475
Level 17: 550

This meaning that no lums have to be picked up in Levels 17 or 18.

Saving would cost almost no time in this game since it allows you to save after every level, and it saves in about a second(about as fast as Super Mario 64 does).

I have not completely ironed-out which 550 to pick up, but I'm pretty close, since in both runs I got to Level 15 with 55x each time. Hopefully soon I can start posting complete level walkthroughs that will outline my path and which I pick up, then anyone with tips on which to get can give me their input.

Well, there you go, I'd also like to make sure if there would be any interest in a run of this great game(One of the best ever on the N64, behind Mario and Zelda).
Thread title:
welcome to the machine
I'd love to see it.  However, I sadly don't have a copy of the game.  I do remember there being places that look almost sequence-break-able though.

Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
I know of a sequence break for this game... But it's in an area that you don't have to go to. <_< Good luck if you attempt this. I might try a single-segment any% some day.

EDIT: Woops, forgot to link you to these:

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I decided that since this was my first free day in a while, I should get back to running this game. I tried doing the whole thing in a single sitting.

I timed the attempt to come out at about 3 Hours 18 Minutes.
That's with plenty of deaths and fuck-ups. Not to mention I wasn't really being that hard-core about the attempt in general. Many times I would die right before a check point lum and I would have to take another whole minute or two just to get back to that point. The Worst part was in the Iron Mountains(Level 17), when I have to get back all of the children while riding the boat. After taking 3-4 minutes collecting all of them, my boat seemed to just spontaneously combust out of nowhere.

Anyways, I'm thinking that a good single segment time would be sub 3:00. I'm shooting for something in between 2:30 and 2:45 in a segmented run, probably a segment per level.

I'm going to post how many lums I pick up in each level in my next post, I ended up with 552 or 554 at the end of level 16, I've already forgotten.

Well, I ended up with 554 lums at the final door.

Also, last night, instead of recording all the lums I picked up last night, I decided to start a segmented run to see how fast I could actually get this last night. Once again I wasn't super serious about the time, I accepted the first attempt at each segment in which I didn't die or have any huge screw ups. My times/lums that I got from each are below.

Note: #'s of lums are numbers used by the top FAQ/GUIDE from Gamefaqs by DWouters. Check his guide if you want to know what each lum I pick up is.

The Woods of Light:
Lums #1-5(You have to get all of them to proceed).

The Fairy Glade:
Lums # 6,7,10(all directly in my path)
# 28,29(Net next to Ly that you must climb)
# 30,31(Must pick up when climbing between two pipes)
# 32-38(Pick up all 7 while falling down the large hole)
# 39,40,41,44,45,47(All at the bottom of the necessary air currents)

Save: Roughly 19:00(Both levels)
Total Lums: 25

The Marshes of Awekening:
I pick up all 49 Lums that are on the path while riding Sssssam. You have to go down the path regardless so these are 49 definites to get. Also, because the bonus level can only be accessed once you leave through the end of the stage, I can pick up the 50th lum when I come back for the elixer later on, then leave through the starting point of the stage to avoid it.

Save: 3:53
Total Time: 22:53
Lums: 74

The Bayou:

Once again, I pick up all but one in this stage, since most all of them are either in my direct path, or are really easy/fast to get regardless. The one I'm skipping is number 44, which is the one stuck in the last cage at the end of the rolling barrels path at the end of the stage.

Save: 6:02
Total Time: 28:55
Lums: 123

The Sanctuary of Water and Ice

Lums # 4-9(On your path at the beginning of the level)
# 10-14(Large Gold Lum right below you when swimming by in the next cave)
#20-23(on your path when climbing the net in the cave)
#24-28(Another large lum in your path right in front of the kegs)
#29-40(Around the room right before the sliding room)
#41-49(Grab while sliding to the Boss)

Save: 8:56
Total Time: 37:51
Lums: 164

The Menhir Hills(part one):
Lums # 6-10(Cage behind door you break with the shell in the first area)
#16, right behind tree in the next area before grabing the shell)
#21-31(Grab all while riding on Shell, I actually missed two of these last night, but it doesn't matter since I have to come back through here a second time after getting the elixer)
#35(right behind door you blow up with shell at the end of the path)

Save: 3:27
Total Time: 41:18
Lums: 180

That's what I've got so far, It might be a while until I put up further reports, since The Cave of Bad Dreams is gonna be pretty hard to get through without dying once, and I'll be moving soon, so this may take another week or two to get to.

I cant wait to see this run.  it's gonna be so freaking AWESOME.

Well, I cheated tonight and took the time to do two more segments before I went to bed. Thankfully I got them both right on my first try(that is didn't die on either level) Here's the reports:

The Cave of Bad Dreams:
This is where I pick up the 50th lum in the Marshes of Awakening on the way to the level. As for the level, I go ahead and pick up all 50 lums again since none are too far off the path(although there is 1 I'm considering leaving out). This level doesn't have a bonus level, so regardless I don't have to worry about it.

Save: 13:14

Lums # 45-50(I pick up these six while on the last shell)

Well, so far I've completed 7 out of 18 levels in under 1 Hour, not bad so far I guess. For a practice run anyways.

I may have missed this somewhere, but what platform are you playing on? (wait... you mentioned the N64, so that's probably it...)

I've got the game on PC, and I never could get my gamepad to work properly with it.  Even with a separate button mapping program, the buttons kept behaving very erratically for that game.  I feel bad for never completing the game, but I also don't want to have to use the horrible keyboard controls it comes with.

the last level is hellish enough that without a proper controller you probably wont be able to do it.

Well, I knocked Levels 8,9, and 10 tonight, with a about a 30 15 to 20 second fuck up in level 10. Well here you go.

The Canopy:
Lums #1-9(while climbing the spider web, running from the spider).
#19,20(cage over pit after spider)
#21-38(All pretty much in my way throughout the level)
#39,40(On my actual run I'm going to skip these since I get to level 10 with 4 more than I need, at any rate, these are the two in the cage at the end of the level that are only accessible by swinging on the Purple Lum)
#41-50(Once again, pretty much on my path)

#6-17(All on my path)

I also pick up 6 more lums while waiting for the teensie to get to the door

The Sanctuary of Lava and Fire

I'm going to be a little lazy with this level and probably edit it tomorrow. In short, I only pick up 12 total lums in this level, and have found a way to skip a large chunk of this level so I don't pass too many lums)

Well, now I can't even get the game to run on my computer... I've tried "everything" although I know I've gotten it to run before.  I found a disclaimer in the ReadMe for my button mapping software (joytokey.exe) saying that it may not work for some DirectInput/DirectX programs or something...

I'll be looking into ebay for sure - I loved the half of this game I did play once upon a time and am greatly looking forward to seeing a run! I'm sorry that I can't provide more objective feedback - keep up the good work!

Really? What is the trick?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Man, I wish I was able to just make videos and post them online for you guys to see.

Here's the trick(It might be well known but take it as you will)

The trick is in the large room with the yellow orb that I have to throw all the way down to the bottom. When I reach the bottom, I enter another room that has a large strip of Lava that is too long to throw the yellow orb across. At the end of the lava on the other side is a plum. I shoot at in once, which gives it just enough momentum to come all the way back to me then stop in front of the wall. At this point I don't think the game developers intended for you to get the orb across the lava this early(I forget how you're supposed to do it, since I've been using this trick since I started the run about a month ago). Anyways I fall on the plum in front of me, and the orb stays on the plum with me. Now the only way to catipult you're way back to the other side is by turning around and shooting, but turning around causes Rayman to pick up the orb again, so I throw the orb straight up, and just before I catch it, I take one shot, Rayman catches the orb, and I drift all the way back across the lava. This trick skips many rooms, including a very hard and annoying shell segment.

This trick probably saves me 5-10 minutes by itself.

Hmm, I think that's what you're supposed to do. I might check it out later.

Random thought... would you like a PC copy of the game?  I could send you the PC copy (which is worthless to me now), then you can get a completed save file from gamefaqs, then you could record videos of tricks on PC.

Far-fetched, but I don't care, I'd rather offer than not.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Psonar, that's really nice for you to offer, but unfortunatly, I never play PC games. I have a feeling that using the keyboard to play the game would just cause me to have more of a learning curve. For that reason, don't worry about sending it to me(for now anyways). I'm going to probably try and just get a DVD Recorder soon.

I did level 11 last night. This level actually has plenty of lums right in front of me, so that was good.

The Echoing Caves:
Lums#1-10(2 large lums that are in my way in the first area.
#16-20(another large lum at the end of the first area.
#21-23,29-38(grab all of them while flying with the barrel)
#40(In front of you after killing a henchman)
#41-50(also grab these while flying on the last barrel)

There is another large lum worth 5 that's not too far off the path in the first area that I'm considering, however I feel like I'm doing pretty good since almost everything I've picked up has been either in my way or directly in front of me, but once again it's a possibilty.

Good god, Level 12 took wayyyy too many fucking attempts. It's way too easy for teh A button to just not respond when trying to jump across the platforms. Many times it won't jump as high, or the worst, roll instead.

Went a little crazy tonight and finished my practice segments of levels 13-16. Here you go.

Top of the World:
Lums#1-33(throughout the first part where you're riding on the seat) (I only picked up 31 of these, and I don't know if there is any way to actually get all 33 without dying and going back through it. I don't think I'll need those though, since I'm still overshooting my 550 lums by the end of level 16).
#34(on the path)
#35-37(1st cage, behind enemy)
#40(In room with Teensie)
#41(when climbing over the pit with the Teensie)

The Sanctuary of Rock and Lava
I'm honestly looking at the end of the Gamefaqs guide right now and I can't remember which ones I skipped so I'll just say I picked up 47 lums, which none of these were too far off the path, but I have to admit there were some slower ones in this level than usual. I still think all of these will be kept in the final run.

Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
I played through the game again and found a couple useful tricks:

EDIT: More:

Single segment runners should take the slow route in this section or else this might happen:

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Hey, thanks for all the videos/tips. I actually knew most of those, but the Baby Globox skip in the first level was enough to make me restart the run altogether. After 5 tries today, I was able to get the first level successfully recorded with the Baby Globox Skip. My time was 7:13 When I saved. My only real mistake was missing the first lum once, so that probably cost a second. Everything else was fine though, and like I said I got the skip.

Now that I'm starting back up on this run actually, I have set a goal for myself. Sub 2 Hours 30 Minutes. I'm pretty sure I can get it, as long as I don't settle for any crappy segments.

The run will have 18 segments, 1 for each level, besides levels 2,3(which will be put together in 1 seg.) and Level 6 will have two segments, since you have to do Level 7 in the middle of 6.

Now the reason why I have to do Levels 2 and 3 together is because of Trick #2 on cheese's video. I already knew of this, but watching that video convinces me that the community will expect me to be able to skip that tutorial. The problem is that, while I'm able to skip it before level 2, if I don't automatically move on to level 3 before saving/going on to level 3, he will give me the tutorial before I can move the cursor off of level 2.

This can become a bitch because Level 2 is long(10+minutes) and Level 3 is one of the easiest levels in the game to fuck up(mainly because I HAVE to get all 49 lums while surfing in this level, and there are two particular spots where I can easily fuck this up and miss one or two). But, I save 20-25 seconds due to this trick, so I have to do this. It just might take me all weekend to actually pull this bitch of a segment off.

Thanks again for the videos cheese. I'll need to learn how to do a few of them, but they will all be in my run for sure. If you find any others they would be much appreciated.

I was actually about to post this, but I see you've already realized it. Good luck with that segment; it will surely be one of the hardest in the run. Some assorted tips:

After the Cave of Bad Dreams, fall in the swamp and you'll respawn next to the entrance to the Marshes of Awakening. Saves maybe ten seconds (rough estimate).

Make sure to take the fast route in Tomb of the Ancients; once you get to the first (I think) barrel flying part, don't follow the Lum trail to a passageway; instead, get the Lums, then take a right. You might have to go to the area to see what I'm talking about.

For the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire (level 10, IIRC), find the fastest route... The level is pretty massive, but only part of it is necessary. When I went through it, I got six Lums, but you said you got twelve, so maybe we're taking different paths.

These:

Well, somehow I was able to finish that segment on my first try last night. It also looked really good. I probably had 5-10 seconds worh of mistakes in the whole segment, which included Levels 2 and 3(The Fairy Glade/Marshes of Awakening). My biggest mistakes were that I was kind of slow when I have to fall down the long cavern near the end of The Fairy Glade, and in Marshes of Awakening, my only mistake was stopping on the bridge with the two lums after jumping off the ramp mid way through the level. But that was probably only a second or two, while all my mistakes from level 2 amounted to maybe 10 seconds. In a 13+ minute segment, that was annoying as balls, that's more than acceptable.

I also finished Levels 4,5, and the first part of 6. My current time is 37 Minutes 39 Seconds. I currently have 181 lums(missed one in The Menhir Hills but I have to come back here anyways, so I'll just get it next time).

Also, cheese I have still used all of your tricks for the segments so far. The Murfy skip in the Menhir Hills was useful, however in the Marshes of Awakening, you can actually jump straight from the first lily to the last one, you don't even have to touch the second one. Still, keep the vids coming if you got 'em.
