If you are thinking of doing going commando I say don't buy any weapons except for a couple of your favorites because later you need a certain amount of bolts to access some areas(like for an objective to go to the next planet you need 10,000 bolts). i've beaten the game in less than 5 hours(game time) where all I did was use the lancer, the wrench and the gravity bomb(plus their upgrades).
One thing I've always had to spend a lot of time with in the second game is the space battles. It's not that it takes a while for me to finish them, but it takes a while for me to get the Raritarium to buy the upgrades. I've noticed that once I buy the Fusion Lasers, the space battles take much less time then before. Did you try to earn the Raritarium for the upgrades, or did you figure out a way to finish the required battles quickly without upgrading your ship?
