Hey, just found newmnsage's Ratchet and Clank guidelines... its old, but it may have some useful tips for sure...

I think I'll update that now.

EDIT: Updated.

EDIT2: It's not available anymore now that my geocities site is gone.

I forgot you'd have the TELT, so yeah, if you can clip through the wall.
Long live SF64!
Has anyone else attempted the Ghost Ratchet Glitch that I found a while back?

There's a link to it in this post...

...also wanted to make sure folks saw that post, which is a bunch of links to stuff I posted a while back (shortcuts, decoy glove stuff, etc.)

I really think the Ghost Ratchet thing combined with a death abuse (at the end you get stuck) would be an awesome way to shortcut almost all of Quark's Headquarters, including the boss.  It wouldn't have been allowedin an actual run until the new rules which are more lenient on Out of Bounds... that and HalfMillenium's run already has death abuse, so it wouldn't be out of place there.

[hr]
on a side note, I don't think I was ever able to clip through the wall on Veldin, but that doesn't mean it's not possible.  The Decoy Glove is all about patience and luck in difficult spots, so almost anything is probably possible.  Once you start really experimenting with it, you'll curse the fact that you're only allowed 20 gloves at a time... unless you hav the PDA I guess, so nevermind...

I read that, yes, but only a few days ago, not included in the run, sadly.

I surely hope you can get through there, save maybe 2 minutes overall.

That's ok though, because it requires death abuse to be used to the fullest, and your run doesn't abuse death thus far, so there's no need to break that trend now.  I think there is potential to use it without death abuse though if you fight the snagglebeast and finish the level like normal.

I do abuse death on Veldin for a health refill.  Would not a savewarp be more effective with the glitch, anyway?

It doesn't use death abuse. What are the two shortcuts in the first third of level? If one involves jumping onto the rocks after the first swingshots, that's impossible on my version. Also, does the glitch mean you don't get Qwark's ship, so you have the Novalis courier ship up until Gemlik Moonbase?

For the hoverboard races, my best time on Kalebo III is 1:38:XX.

The ship changes whether you fly the green one or not.

Here's a little video I made of me messing around with the Ghost Ratchet glitch... it's not exactly stellar gameplay, but it gets the point across.

Ghost Ratchet glitch video - enjoy!

[I've also got it on youtube now...]

I'm going to try to make a better demonstration video of it or a run of just that level for youtube if I have time.

(if anyone has downloading difficulties, I can host it elsewhere - I've been trying out a new hosting site...)

Just thought I'd inform everyone that I was able to find the tape that I recorded my 1:46:10 practice run on so I went ahead and captured/encoded it.

Again, due to lack of hard disk space I had to separate the vid into two parts; the first part is here and the second is here.

I want to point out that I had done this run before I discovered such things such as going counter-clockwise in the force field room on Blarg Station, Nebula G34 (the room before the Alien Queen fight) among other things so if you see something that I should have done but didn't, that's probably why.

Segment 11 lost to my god-awful DVD recorder.  Luckily, all that was on the ruined disk was segment 11 and the failed attempts.

Haven't been excited about running since that.

Ah, man, I'm sorry to hear about your lost DVD.  Technical setbacks are really depressing.  I'm sure you'll get up the drive to keep going though.  You've had a lot of momentum through the first half of the game - it won't take you too long to do the second half, especially since its segmented.  Just take it one step at a time.  If you're burnt out on playing for now you could always upload another segment Tongue

[hr]
Anyway...

Just to refresh our memory... here's the segment list:

Quote:
I think I'll restart.  New route:
Seg 1: Veldin and Novalis
Seg 2: Metropolis and Eudora
Seg 3: Aridia and get Grindboots on BTS
Seg 4: The rest of BTS

From there on, the route stays the same.

The rest of the route is...

Quote:
5) Rilgar
6) Umbris
7) Battalia+Gaspar
8) Orxon [clank]
9) Pokitaru
10) Orxon [ratchet]
11) Hoven
12) Gemlik Base
13) Oltanis
14) Quartu [clank battle]
15) Kalebo III+ Quartu [Drek's Fleet Infobot]
16) Drek's Fleet
17) Veldin [through clank battle]
18) Veldin [final battle]

So... if this is still the plan, that means your segment 11 is the Hoven segment right?  I just watched the Hoven portion of newmansage's recently posted video to get a feel for his take on the level.  Obviously you'll need some different strategies since you don't have the suck cannon, and I don't think you have the devastator yet either do you?  Were there any particular spots that you most often had to reset at?
two rows of links on main page pretty nifty
Yes, it is the Hoven segment.  It wouldn't be so bad, but this will be the third time I'll get a finalized segment of this part of the game.  Once, I decided I needed to do more bolt hoarding.  Then the DVD.  Uhhh...the worst part of Hoven is falling in the water right at the start.  (I go behind the buildings, kill the blarg, get the bolts, go on platform).  I also go around all of the cave-tunnels with the aforementioned longest jump (jump-wait-flip-wait-thrust pack-hyperstrike) because it looks cooler and has to save some time...but it's easy to fail on the second tunnel.
I don't have devastator yet, either, I use blaster to kill the helicopter.

As for another segment...I've been putting that off for a while, now.  I'm considering waiting til SDA launch or at least send-in (except I'll probably end up encoding anyway...) the VOBs.
Long live SF64!
Just a random tidbit, I was able to completely skip the water tanks on Umbris using the Ghost Ratchet glitch.  When I've arrived at the top of the long ladder where the pools are, I head left instead of right, over to the ledge full of boxes.  I then stretch jump through the wall there and float all the way to the boss chamber.  It has to be done with full health, because it takes 2 or 3 bounces on the lava to reach the nearest island, but I was able to get the Batalia infobot by jumping from the pools down to the boss chamber, so it does work.

I've yet to time myself on the portion following activating the glitch to compare with newmansage's video, but I'm sure it saves a good amount of time since your skipping all the hydrodisplacer stuff, fish killing, walking and swimming, and of course, the entire Snagglebeast battle.

Segment 11 rerererecorded.

I think the DVD problem was an eventual good thing.  I managed to go from 52 to 51 minutes on Gemlik Base, with even more bolts.  Can realistically hope for 1:00 on Drek's Fleet.

Awesome work dude! So are you back to working on it regularly?

I've got a full load of classes for the summer so I won't have real time to play Ratchet and Clank until the Fall, but I figured you might have time this summer to finish your run... does that sound likely?

Good work on segment 11 - Good luck on Segment 12!
two rows of links on main page pretty nifty
Yes, with summer here I plan on finishing all the runs in my sig. I had forgotten how engrossing speedrunning is, so I've been putting it off, but now I'm excited again. (and backing up the disk each time I finish a segment :p )

Note to anybody planning a R&C new game run: At the beginning of Veldin 1, go to Ratchet's house for ~1000 bolts. Very stupid for me to have missed.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
There are only about that many bolts in the level. It's not worth going there unless you can't get a few extra bolts from elsewhere.
Long live SF64!
Dang, how could we miss this!

From my playthroughs, I think the extra bolts at the beginning would lighten the stress on getting bolts at the Blarg Tactical Station so that I can at some point get the blaster before paying off the guard on Blackwater city... as it is I'm occasionally short on Blackwater city and find myself hitting up the first room on the path to the right (the tank and the metal boxes) for several hundred extra bolts.  I think everyone agrees that it's essential to have the blaster for Quark's Headquarters to quickly handle the floating mines and the rotating artillery.

From my perspective, while it may not be absolutely necessary (to grab those bolts on Veldin), it serves a better chance of speeding up later levels by reducing the amount of small side-tracks needed to have the 2500 for the blaster and 4000 for the bouncer.

Just my thoughts though - my playing is probably a bit lax and bolt-heavy compared to more dedicated speedrunners.  I'd rather focus on getting a darn good run completed than getting a perfect run planned and never completed.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
The Bomb Glove is enough for beating Qwark's HQ. I'd advise not buying any weapons until Batalia, then getting the Devastator. You may lose a few seconds fighting the floating mines, but it's quicker than bolt collection.

About hoverboard races, on the Rilgar course, I've achieved 1:33:00. I'm aiming for 1:32:XX before I submit.
two rows of links on main page pretty nifty
Would you buy the blaster later for ammo spawns in the Drek fight, or some other weapon?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
The Blaster is the cheapest, so presumably. It's also reasonably effective against Drek.

Segment 12 probably recorded. It's going to be a scrounge for bolts from there on, but I can manage it quickly. Oltanis is high in bolts if you take out the tiny bots.

Double post...

In the slickest of luck, I decided to do segment 12 again. On my second re-attempt, I collected 300 more bolts than the last segment 12 in less time! I'm getting times of 1:01 on Drek's Fleet but I collect too many bolts (wasting time) so 1:00 might be manageable with some bolt manipulation.

I also have a deadline of July '08. That originally meant by July '08, but then I spent yesterday redoing part 12 instead of doing seg 13. So with luck I can get by July, but realistically July 5th or so.

Triple Edit:
Segment 13 finished. Segment 14 is difficult to gain some real sense of speed because the mission is slow and tedious. Played through the rest of it, saving at segmentation points, and got 1:12. 1:11 is reality, 1:10 is my goal. (saving mid-rocket thrust on last button for final time)
Long live SF64!
So, how goes the Ratchet and Clank awesomeness?

I've been studying away all summer and haven't been on SDA much, but I thought I'd check in on the run to see how it's going. Anyone still actively working on it or hoping to work on it?

In the fall, I may have time to try at it some more - I can never tell these days.
