Yeah the first game is pretty simple, but walloper=long range?

You definitely need the remote controlled (forgot the name) weapon to destroy towers on a particular spacey station, but other than that avoidance is easy.

Just practice the final boss, I never found him particularly challenging.
You don't need the visibomb for the towers on Otlanis Orbit. You can use the Devastator as he said he already uses. As for the Walloper, I was confused about that being long range also.

I wasn't saying that the walloper had long range, I was saying that I use the Walloper a lot to charge through the levels and the Devestator was my long range weapon of choice.  I didn't think I'd need to explain that.

The space station you are talking about can be finished with the Devestator and there's no difference outside of having to go four or five seconds out of the way to strike one of the towers near the end.  It's the one that is positioned directly behind a force field and there's not enough room to back up to reach it, so you go around a way to where the Gadgetron vendor is and turn around.  There is a window with a clear shot at the tower.
give me your eyes!!!
Ah yes, I again completely forgot about which weapon the game intends for you to use at that point.

I'll stop talking now or go buy the game again...
It takes 17 Devestator Missles to take out a section of Drekk's health.  Otherwise, you're gonna be using the suck cannon which quite frankly sucks in this fight...  The Gadgetron P.D.A. is going to be required, unless I manage to work for a Telsa Claw, though I don't know what kind of damage that does to the boss.
yeah for one I'm just not good enough to plan out an entire normal mode run of the first ratchet and clank, since you have to figure every bolt collected, without the normal run I don't think the challenge mode file will be accepted. I bet somebody could do it but I'm just not dedicated/skilled/too lazy to go through with a normal mode run  :-/  But another reason I quit doing my challenge mode run is that my little siblings erased the file  :-/  If anyone is going to try to run this I could give em some tips.

It turns out that I'm not going to have TOO much trouble staying ahead of bolts if I make it a point to smash crates as I see them, but granted, I'm still going to be pushing it tight for the Devestator.  A runner will need to pick up the Blaster though for the sake of time in Quark's Obstacle course with all the mines and turrents that otherwise slow you down too much or are INCREDIBLY difficult to pass with a wrench only.

So, with Novalis Infobot (500), Al's Upgrade and Swingshot (2,000), the Blaster (2,500, preferably by the Blarg Space Station), the Grind Boots (2,000), that's 7,000 bolts right there.

What's very discouraging, really, is that besides the fact that I'm going to be scraping by to see Quark, Quark's Base isn't really loaded with bolts and I'm going to be needing to pick up the Walloper, bribe a deserter, and have a chance to get the Devestator in the next two planets after that base alone.  I'll naturally get the Walloper since I'll get a ton of mileage out of it and try to get the 10,000 bolts ASAP.  Getting the 2,000 bolts to bribe the deserter isn't too hard in Batallia what with the warehouse right near the Gadgetron Machine with a good thousand bolts right there.

I'll need to get the 10,000 bolts within the Ocean Resort and Hoven before the Oltanis Orbit (Edit: I can hit Oxron over too, but Clank stages don't normally produce too many bolts) then if that wasn't enough, I need to get a good 3,000 bolts for the Oltanios stage (Making sure to do Quark first if possible, there's a tricky shortcut that can cut 20 seconds if you can perform it right).

From that point on, I'm going to just be trying to save bolts to afford Devestator Rockets in the Drekk fight.  We need 17 Devestator Rockets a chunk, that's 1,700 per segment of Drek's health past the first one (Which will only be half that to fill up).  Drek's about on par with other Ratchet and Clank end bosses, really.  You just don't have the bouncer on hand to completely destroy the punk like in 2 and 3.  D'oh.  So, 1700x6, I'll need 10,200 bolts just to afford the ammunition for the boss fight.  It's gonna be cutting it close for 3/4 the game, which means the runner WILL have to slow down a lot at times.  It's gonna be a FUN game to run....  (Rolls eyes)
*Insert witty comment here*
k, i decided to register cause i think i have some relevant input to help on this run. there is a sort of cheat in the game that i don't think is well known if known at all. now i haven't played this game in a good while so i hope i can explain this good enough.

the only thing required to do this is the Taunter "weapon". in Blackwater City there is a spot where you go down a pipe, hit a switch, and then the water level starts to rise. get on the small platform, but instead of hitting the switch turn around and aim the taunter back up the pipe you just came from. invisible boxes will start breaking and you'll get a steady stream of bolts for holding down the fire button (not sure the rate since like i said i haven't played the game in a while).

looking at 1 of the walkthroughs for this game i saw that this trick is possible in other places, but i believe this is the earliest spot in the game that it will work. however once the switch has been hit to make the water rise this trick won't work anymore until you go through the game a second time. it's up to you guys to decide if it's faster to do this trick and run through the game or to build up the bolt total along the way.

hope i've been some help to you guys. i enjoy watching all the runs.

P.S. sorry for not capitalizing. that's just how i type on the internet.

I use the bomb glove or suck cannon to smash big stacks of crates for bolts. It saves a lot of time that could be wasted breaking boxes with the wrench.
I'm thinking of having a go at a "New Game +" Run of this game myself (probably Single-Segment). The PAL Version, to my knowledge, does move at a different speed to the NTSC Version, having compared videos of the two Versions running together, so it will probably take longer than an NTSC Run of this type would.

I suppose I could go for a New Game + 100% Run, which might be intriguing.

The primary reason for me holding off on doing a normal Run can be summed up in one word: Drek (without the "Ultimate Supreme Executive Chairman" bits). He takes absolutely yonks to defeat without the R.Y.N.O or the Tesla Claw (I have done it before, however), and without the Gadgetron PDA as well, he takes far too long for a Speed-Run.

The best thing about a Single-Segment Run of this game is that all of the difficult platforming bits, for me, come within the first half of the game (save the Mission to locate Captain Qwark in Gorda City, of course). The three locations at which I regularly struggle are the cavern entrance in Torbruk Crater (timing the rest of the Stage plays a big role, as well), the second section of the Training Course in Metropolis (again, timing is everything), and the flooding tunnels in BlackWater City (which are basically a case of rushing through them).
give me your eyes!!!
Normally a proper run needs to be done before new game+...

I'd ask Radix before commiting yourself.
I know. That's why I'm waiting to see whether or not someone else is going to go ahead with a normal game Run first. If not, I'll have a go at that, as well.

I might just do one. It won't be pretty to start, but it should be something. I have played that game an awful lot.

hey I'm gonna do this...eventually...........probably  :-[
Sub-Terrania!!!
I had been debating for a while whether to make my own topic or to just go ahead and revive this one.

Needless talk aside, I must say I'm rather disappointed that there hasn't been a (normal, first time through) run of this game yet. Especially considering that this topic was made back in 2005.

I've been wanting to do a speedrun of this game for a while, and last week I finally got around to doing one. I'll not go into detail, but my final time came out to a horrid 3:14. Since then I've been tweaking my routes and collecting bolts more efficiently, and today I just finished a run with a final game time of 2:29 (I saved right before hitting the final switch to get this time). Not exactly excellent, but not bad, either.

From what I saw playing back the tape, I made about 5 minutes worth of mistakes, excluding not memorizing the Trespasser puzzles which would be another minute or so, as well as collecting more bolts than was needed which accounts for 1-2 more minutes. As of now my goal is to create a single-segment run of under 2:30; possibly lower as I practice more (I'm a bit out of practice as I have not played this game in about a year); however, with certain levels requiring a little bit of luck (namely Orxon, Gemlik Base, and Veldin), I may end up splitting this into 2 or 3 segments.

Anyway, is anyone still interested in a run of this game?
MGS for PS1 forever.
It would definitely be cool to see a run of this game.
give me your eyes!!!
Hells yes!! I'd love to see a run of this game, I probably played this one the most out of the three despite all the extra stuff in the sequels, and knowing that one has actually been done is awesome. Good luck in your single segment; I can't remember quite a lot of it so I can't think of any particular trouble spots, but I don't mind segmented or ss, any run would be great!
Sub-Terrania!!!
Oh, there are plenty of spots where I can potentially have trouble at:

Novalis: From the start I go to the path to the plumber. If I go at full speed I should be able to reach and grab onto the first shifting platform just as it ascends. This is early enough in the game to where should I miss, I reset.
Kerwan: The obstacle course should be completed in about 1 minute, 10 seconds. Falling off a platform at anytime results in a reset.
Eudora: I perform multiple Stretch Jumps on the floating platforms right before the final bolt crank on the Swingshot path. For some reason I've become less accurate with the jumps which sometimes results in death...and a reset.
Rilgar: I have to make sure I have 4,000 bolts by the time I reach the bouncer or I have to reset.
Gaspar: I'll need to have at least two nanotech if I am to jump into the lava and boost myself up to the second turret (of course more would be preferred).
Orxon (Clank): I have to make sure the Gadgebots stay with me and don't get destroyed, especially at the part right after where I get the Magneboots.
Orxon (Ratchet): Sometimes when I attempt to stand on top of the Magnestrip I fall through and die. If this happens more than twice I reset.
Gemlik Base: I need 10,000 bolts by the time I reach the second vendor so I can destroy the fourth tower. This usually isn't a problem for me anymore.
Kalebo III: This planet and Veldin are the slowest points of my runs. Also from this point on I sometimes have trouble staying alive. I need 2,500 bolts for the Pyrocitor (plus 120 for ammo) which helps destroy the test bots quickly. Also, while not a big problem, I must take care not to make a mistake during the Hoverboard race.
Drek's Fleet: Not that big of a problem anymore, but the guards still sometimes discover me and hit the alarm button before I destroy them.
Veldin: I use a very specific pattern for Veldin which gets me through alive about 75% of the time (I really should practice this level more...). The fight against Drek is somewhat luck-based; I need him to shoot out mines/send out bots to quickly eradicate him. 9-10 minutes would be ideal for the final fight; longer than 12 would be bad.
give me your eyes!!!
Woo.... but you seem very well prepared, this should be good! I'm looking forward even more to what you can come up with!

You might already know this but there is a way to skip the bridge that gets bombed part at novalis when going to see the mayor of the planet or whatever. To do this head towards the river and jump in right northeast I think of a raised platform-ish object. Then once in the creek there is a rock you can jump on. Can't really describe but you'll find it if you mess around. Once you find it you just jump over to the other side...saves a few seconds. At aridia during the swingshot part you can fall down early to the next part (with the three big pipes in the construction room, leading to skids agent). At (the raining war-torn planet?) you can skip a big section of the magneboots path by waiting until you are exactly upside down and falling of to the left side i think, from there you will land where it straightens out again saving a few seconds. Finally i think I heard somewhere you might be able to skip all the towers at gemlik base, but I don't remember for sure, If anyone else knows that could be useful.
Trust the pigeons. Or ELSE!
So the run is back on. Sweet! I love the R&C series and can't wait to see this speed run. Which reminds I need to finish watching the UYA one.
Watcher
YEAH! I luve R&C series. And speed run will be sth nice to see (game for speed running is a hard nut). Good luck & can't wait for movies Cheesy

So how is the run coming along? Smiley
Sub-Terrania!!!
Yeah...sorry about not responding for like three weeks, but I fell ill with a skin infection. Unfortunately this occurred during Spring Break which was when I was planning to work on this. I don't have a lot of time normally due to work, college, and church, but rest assured that I'm not going to give up on this run.

I already know about the Novalis shortcut but am still debating whether to use it or not, as using it causes me to skip valuable bolts (although on my last run I had about 600 more than was needed at the first critical point so I should probably be okay) and will require that I get it right the first time (my success rate isn't 100%, sadly). I don't think I even go anywhere near the other shortcuts you mentioned (excluding Gemlik Base).

I should have time to work on this over the weekend.
