Quote from Endless:
It's a trick known as strafejumping, which is present in every id game and best known from the Quake series. The basic idea is to continually jump to maintain your momentum and to accelerate in the air through strafing and specific mouse movements. It's a bit arcane and takes a lot of practice, but it allows you to move very quickly. As for how he jumped high, the stairs are effectively a ramp, and colliding with a ramp causes you to move at the angle of the ramp. Since he's going fast horizontally to begin with, the ramp causes him to go fast vertically instead.
Here's a picture to demonstrate, read it right to left.

Quote from BWoods:
@atomicjo: Rage's ramp jumping is pretty freaking strong, I'd say it's stronger than Quake 1/Quake 3 CPMA's ramp jumping. You can get some pretty absurd height if you can make sure you are getting enough speed going up the ramp. A lot of staircases are built as ramps physically except for a few examples (Sheriff Black's staircase in Wellspring, staircase leading up to Redstone in Subway town.) This is done to keep the number of physical surfaces to a minimum, iD software was VERY selective with what they let you interact with physically in this game. A lot of the game world is much simpler than what you see, unfortunately there isn't a way to draw the world like how we had commands like r_showtris in the Quake 3 engine.

Okayy, I didn't notice he had great speed before hitting the ramp, cause he start running for less than 1 meter before hitting it.
Stalker!
Doing a single segment run might not be the best option. there are plenty of small timesafers you can use in a SS run and the movement cant be optimal too.

i recommend a segmented run

Ignore the previous video, you can't get anywhere from there. Here's another little skip i just found that will save perhaps 10 seconds and a lot of ammo:

Not sure if anyone's still interested in this game though.

Yeah, i'm certain that there are loads of small skips here and there in the game, probably some big ones as well. I will probably do a segmented run in the future.

I do circle jumps at the beginning of each jump. It's based on the same principal as strafe jumping, it lets you gain speed whilst still on the ground basically.

If you're up for doing a segmented one, I'd say we start recording times and then improve as we can.

For checking skips and stuff, I usually load the level via console and then 'killAI' or 'god'.

I would love to get my hands on the unpatched .exe to further explore some console commands.
I think you can find it via an "alternative" way

I have the unpatched .exe, but it would be concidered filesharing/pirating if i sent it to you anyway so you might as well get it via an "alternative" way as atomicJo said.

How do we record times in segmented runs? The in-game timer seems to be the best option imo, that way it's not possible to cut parts out etc.
Another skip, pretty big this time. As many of you probably have noticed, you don't inherit the momentum of the car when you exit it. With this in mind I tried if it worked with vertical momentum as well, and guess what:

This also applies when you die by suicide/enemy with vertical momentum mid air, when you revive the momentum is reseted and you'll survive the fall if you were killed close enough to the ground. This might work in places like the ghost hideout or the jackal canyon.

Will start my segmented run now, is the the pm_noBob command allowed? Doesen't change anything game wise, just something i prefer visually. ID removed all the "cheat" cvars in the newest version but left the noBob command in the game so guess it's not considered cheating.

Edit: If you don't know what noBob is, I use it in this video:

It makes it so that the screen doesen't sway when you walk etc.
So close :/

I have found that turrets are really good in some situations when you have to kill a bunch of stuff before you can proceed:

Can probably be done faster with better placements of the turrets. Not sure if it's a timesaver in the long run since you need to buy the schematics and find/buy parts but I definitely think so.

Close to finding a glitch that basically skips that whole mission. Just have to get to the other side of that train, which unfortunately doesen't seem to be possible.

Edit: The only "relevant" part is the first ten seconds, the rest is just my trying to find other possible ways to bypass.

Another close one, might still be possible some way. 40 seconds in i closed the game and installed the release .exe so that i could cheat and add pm_jumpheight 100 and get up there. Could only load an autosave from when the area was cleared.

This will only work if you somehow could get up there without cheating. There's lots of other interesting places you can reach once you get out from the map so there might be other ways as well.

I have started recording segments now and I'm currently at the ghost hideout. Finally got this route to work:

Fucked up twice in the end though so I need to redo it till I get it perfect.
Stalker!
looks good, at this speed its seems to be kinda difficult to avoid the guy before the cutscene.

how many segments are done already?

I haven't had any problems avoiding him in earlier runs, just need fairly high speed and then go to the right of him. Usually lets you right past.

Three recorded segments before the hideout. Two of them is just to avoid having to watch the intro and the car cutscene over and over again though.
I've watched your work on this game Kitin and you have the skill to make an awesome run out of this, keep up the good work!
Will you be posting videos of the run in progress?

I might if I find something new or if i'm really happy with a certain segment, let me know if you want to see a certain part.

At this rate it will take a while to finish the run though, got loads and loads of school work to do as well.

Edit: I don't get the in-game timer. I got two runs of the first part of the ghost hideout that are equally long, based on the recorded clips so that gives a threshold of 1/60 second (recorded in 60 fps). Yet they differ 2 seconds according to the in-game timer. Guess i'll just choose the ones that are fastest according to the in-game timer even though they in reality are slower.
Haha, found a really fast way to kill all the enemys you have to kill before proceeding at the last part of the ghost hideout.

I will probably use this segment in the run, I could improve it some but the time and frustration wouldn't be worth 0.5-1 sec.

That's incredibly awesome.
If there's a segment I'd particularly love to see, it would be getting into the first Authority base. I have a feeling that it'll be something special.

I'll look into that once I get there and post a video of it if I find something interesting. I belive that I have played around there earlier without luck though.
If your PC can handle it you could also start streaming! Cheesy
Quote from Sebastiaaaaan:

That would be embarrassing. Cheesy I have litterally made thousands of failed attempts and I'm only done with 10 segments.

The weird thing is that I always record the best segment within the first 5 attempts, in all of the additional hundreds attempts I'm just trying to improve that segment without success. It is as though my brain only works when I don't know the optimal way to complete a segment and i'm just going for gut feeling.

Just finished this segment:

The first one is the fastest but I included two others that looks better and faster. Could definitely improve but I would probably develop a brain tumor if I tried again.
This is probably the last I post for a while, too much school atm.
