SPEEDruns not SAFEruns
I'm moving to Texas at the beginning of next year and thought it would be fun to get a "marathon" put together that would be exclusively for racing. I'd like participants to come to the location of the marathon and do head to head races, no donations or anything - just runners coming together trying to best each other at the games we love. Is something like this viable? I'm in the early stages obviously and just want to get some feedback from people. No event like this could ever match up to the epicness that is any GDQ, but I think it could be a lot of fun. It's more of just a community building thing, my only fear is that events like this are becoming to frequent, and they lose some of their luster. Let me know if people would be interested in something.
Thread title:
There's a good deal of runners in the Texas area. Runners that come to mind right away include Garrison, dbx, Lobosjr and Kreichjr. It'd definitely be viable, although you would need a good number of runners to come to Texas (and Texas isn't exactly a central area, being in the far south). Doesn't hurt to ask them.

As to my thoughts on frequency of online marathons, I agree. However, this event is different for the following reasons:

1) It does not have any donation incentives. It is explicitly for fun.
2) It is a live marathon rather than an online marathon. Those don't happen nearly as frequently, and it's nice to see everyone gathered in one spot.

I'd support something like this happening, although I would not be able to attend. Good luck to you!

Thanks so much Doicm, I have contact with some other runners on the West Coast, and hope they could make it down as well. Only time will tell but I appreciate the feedback

This is definitely something that would set you apart from all the other (mainly online) marathons. I would more likely call it a meetup rather than a marathon, much like Edenal's Fake-ESA this February. Judging from the response he got from that (and I think you can compare the location of Southern Sweden in Europe to that of Texas in the States somewhat), there'll be more than enough runners willing to come.
Also, Flip's in Texas, isn't he?
It would be very difficult to do a live marathon featuring races exclusively. Races tend to be rather unexciting if there is any significant difference in skill level, so the chances of getting two people in the same room who are well-suited to race a game are very low. I like the idea of a live marathon though, particularly since I live in central TX. I hope you're able to get this rolling!

Very true.

Brainstorm a handful of games in advance? If both runners are good, but not godlike I think there's good chance that a race could work anyways.
Mix it up with some blind races! I'm sure there are speedrunners on IRC who has big lists compiled already!

I would definitely have things planned far ahead of time, with a schedule and everything set up. I think the prospect of having a few god-tier runners playing against each other would be awesome, but would also like to do it with less over used games.

I will think of more ideas to set it apart from what currently happens, I think viewer interactivity would be really good for this kind of thing. Maybe have something set up so people can have predictions for upcoming races and why and read them prior to the race, like they were boxers or something haha.

I really like the feedback I'm getting so far, and would enjoy thoughts/ideas from everyone. Like I said before, its more in the interest of getting everyone together for the joy of gaming and some competition. If it became a multi-day event (2-3) it would be kind of cool to have prizes to give runners. Could do a poll online for race of the day, or trick of the day, clutch play of the day etc.
Maybe set up some kind of SaltyBet system where people can bet points on the outcome of each race and the person with the most points at the end of it gets some kind of prize.

Thought I would post a small update to this - I'm driving down to Texas tomorrow and will be setting a concrete date for this thing in the next 3-4 weeks, it's going to be happening and I'm really hype for it! I think I may do a day of runs and a day of races, maybe two days of each, really depends on who is interested. It should be pretty rad
