Hi everyone, first of all, sorry if I'm in the wrong section, hope I'm not.

So I had some speedrun related questions on crash bandicoot 2 and didn't see someone else talk about it here. To begin, I'm wondering when do I have to start my timer, for now I start it when I hit the start button on the main menu but I saw some guys start with ofr example -12s at this moment so the timer hit 0 at the moment where we can play.
So here's the first question, when does the timer start?

My other question conerns game versions, I know that NTSC and PAL are generaly separated but I wonder if the different consoles are different categories because of the loading screens and all that stuff.
So second question, if I run on a Playstation 1, will I be in the same category than a runner of the same game but on Playstation 2 or other?

Thank you and have a good day !

PS: sorry for my bad english, I'm french so I sometimes make some mistakes =D

For Fun! For GLORY!!
I think this might get moved to Older Consoles, but until then:

When I TAS it, I go from the moment I get full control of Crash in the first warp room. That may not be the proper time to do it, but it never lets me skip a scene or two of the opening cutscene, so that's when I start.
As for version differences, I can't tell you for sure. All I can see is that THE fastest time is from the PAL version, but that could be because it's the only one that can do that skip glitch. If I'm wrong, someone correct me.
Obscure games ftw

The timer starts at the first moment of control, in the warp room.  There's a glitch you can get on the first frame called walking while talking involving taking an action (a spin jump is what I've seen) on the first frame of a cutscene to move during it, mitigating a slight bit of time at the start.

Generally the runs will be compared bar loads in that case.  PAL is faster for this game in all categories I believe, those glitched any% *may* be faster on NTSC.

Both NTSC and PAL can do the "snow go abuse" run.  PAL has faster slidepsinning though due to changes made to not slow Crash down in the PAL version (go naughty Dog, making a game playable in both regions!) and PAL body slam being outright better, in addition to a glitch involving the flame guys in the jetpack levels.

Ah so PAL is better all around. Might need to remember that.
Thank you guys for your answers, that help a lot =)

Sorry I don't really understand what you're saying x)

However my question was more about Playstation 1 vs Playstation 2 than PAL vs NTSC so I'm still a bit at a loss Wink I want to run on PS1 but will I play in the same category than PS2 players? Maybe you answered me and I didn't catch correctly your words and I'm sorry ^^

The simplest solution is to compare the times of completion and ignore any load time differences.
The fair solution is to time the runs without the load times and compare those (so if the PS1 to PS2 gap is 5 minutes for a game, and you got a 45 and someone on a PS2 got a 41, yours would technically be faster).

At SDA the latter happens, though in individual game communities usually the times are just put together.
The Spyro/Crash/Ape Escape community have leaderboards here so you can see what I mean.
Yeah I saw those leaderboards, that's what confused me in the first place ^^
Anyway thank you for your time, I think I have all the elements I need to begin my fabulous speerun Grin
