I hope that contained at least some sarcasm... I personally didn't find it that interesting either, and by saying that I'm certainly not meaning "disrespect to my elders," I'm just making an observation as a watcher.

No it did't, that demo took 6 months to achieve this perfection, iirc.
Do you know someone who would have tried that much around here.

It just seems like most of the people who give a flying flip about Quake (enough to watch or make a run) already know about it, and already know where to go...making the shameless plugging seem out of place.

I've already received a few messages from people thanking me for the videos in the update and saying that they never knew about Quake runs/never had means to watch them.

And e1m3 EH took Peter 'only' 3 months. Of 6+ hours a day playing. On a single minute level. Safe calculations say he restarted the level about 100000-150000 times. I know many people (before you ask: both Quake runners and people who have never even touched Quake in their lives) who consider it the run closest to perfection on the entire site. Obviously, many people will see it differently - some people don't even like fps runs etc. Opinions are different, and that's fine. However, saying that the idea sucks because you think the runs are a 'waste of update space' is ridiculous. If anything, more updates means more money that helps SDA and more visitors.

And groobo, I would love to have a choice in the matter, but we receive less and less id map runs in recent times. The ones currently up are usually pretty hard to beat, and there aren't that many runners that can beat them. Obviously, id demos have a priority in an update, but I have to expand the videos posted past that. As such, the custom map runs will still be added to updates, although obviously I'll be choosing only interesting maps/runs to capture videos from. The 'odd' categories are mostly a relict from the times before Other Games section on SDA existed, demos on those are practically never submitted anyway. Smiley

I didn't say this in my previous posts, but I also like the idea of giving updates on Quake. I don't think more people would start speedrunning Quake though, here's why:

Quake popularity is diminishing. This may be because it takes a lot of practice to beat the current map records, but also because people who want to actually get involved in the Quake community see that the biggest forum on Quake speedrunning is dead. I mean, the only two posts of October are bumps. How can we respect our elders if they never show up at the forum?

Most of Quake conversation takes place on #qdq on Quakenet, I guess that's why. I guess I should mention that in the next update :).

I agree that this would be a good thing to mention in the next update, because I (as well as others, I'm sure) assumed Quake runs weren't really happening anymore because I checked the forum one day and saw year-old topics on the front page!

Aside, I enjoyed the Horvath run, although I was rather oblivious as to what exactly was going on...  Tongue

A little while ago I wrote a badass program called qroute that converts quake demos into a kind of top-down map view of what's going on. However in this case I don't think it would help to watch. The best way is to get the game, play the level, then go crazy trying to become as good as Peter.

I pushed for the videos to be made using nice graphics because nobody likes 300x200 anymore. As it is you should know we only accept demos created with the original EXEs and also JoeQuake, a client written by one of the quake speedrunners - the reason for this exception is that it does not change the game physics in any way (it's open source so we can check these things). So if you don't like all that pretty stuff, use quake.exe and play back the demos yourself. Quake is not hard to get a hold of (cough) and I'm pretty sure iD don't really care if you do rip it off anymore. Romero recently released the original .map files for the quake maps so the only things with any 'copyright' remaining are the textures, models and sound files.

If you don't want to watch the most optimised runs on the site from the most intensely-competed game (in the past), I can't make you. But I will ask you to try, so that you can see what made SDA so great in the first place.
Quake runs in MP4 is fantastic news for those of us without access to the original game. I'm indifferent to weapon models but the high res is a welcome addition.

Can we have the rest of QDQ in glorious HQ and IQ, as well, please?
Yarr
One thing I forgot to ask: does JoeQuake change the appearance of the monsters in any way? Like, frame interpolation so that the movement looks smoother? I did some Quake coop with my brother using GlQuake a while ago, and the monsters were moving very laggy.
sda loyalist
Yes JoeQuake does frame interpolation. I'm not sure if it does movement too.

In fact, nearly all QdQ releases, both ancient and new-ish, have been available in AVI format for years. Most of them are "high" quality. Remember, most of these movies were encoded before any of us SDA staffers had a beefy enough connection to upload IQ versions. Of course, it's hard to find them if you don't know where to look, so without further ado, here they are:

Quake done 100% Quick lite 2 - 681 MB
http://www.archive.org/details/Qd100Qlite2
This is a run that completes Quake on Easy difficulty, killing all monsters and finding all secrets on all maps
while getting from start to end as fast as possible. Finishing time is 33:33

Quake done double Quick lite - 392 MB
http://www.archive.org/download/QddQlite/QddQlite.avi
Quake done double Quick lite is only the 3rd attempt for the QdQ team to run through Quake in cooperative mode. Finishing time is 9:55

Quake done Chopped - 1.1 GB
http://www.archive.org/details/Quake_done_Chopped_11214
Quake done Chopped is a run through Quake on Easy Skill, killing all monsters except zombies, using only the axe.

RUN DMC - 37,6 MB
http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/projects/rundmc/run-dmc-recam.avi
This is the recammed version of the RUN DMC movie, a run on Easy Skill through the Deathmatch Classics episode, a series of single player conversions of classic DM maps by Connor Fitzgerald.
http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/projects/rundmc/run-dmc.avi
Same as above, but without the recams.
http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/projects/rundmc/run-dmc-fov120.avi
Same as above, but with FOV 120.

The Nolans 2004
http://www.archive.org/details/Quake_Nolans2004
Speed runs of various Quake levels, voted the best of those made in the year 2004 at the 4th annual Nolan awards. Not all winning demos were converted to avi for this entry, but all that were are avialable in both 320x240 and 640x480 versions.

Fiend Run Lite - 259 MB
http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyondergames/movies/quakedonequick/frl_cam.avi
A 10:00 run through Quake on Easy Skill morphed as a Fiend! That's right, we used a morph mod to turn the normal Quake guy into a Fiend. This opened up for a bunch of new tricks - of course - which aren't do-able with the normal Quake guy. Increased speed, increased jumping-range, increased damage, etc.
http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/planetquake/qdq/frl_fp.avi
Same as above, but without the recams.

Scourge done Slick - 368,9 MB
http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/planetquake/qdq/SdS_hq.avi
A run through all of Scourge of Armagon, the first official mission pack for Quake, on nightmare skill. Originally released in '98, it still stands as our most ambitious project to date!

Speed Beyond Belief Lite 2 - 83 MB
http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/planetquake/qdq/sbblite2_cam.avi
This is the recammed version of the Speed Beyond Belief Lite 2 movie, a run on Easy Skill through the custom Quake episode created by Matthias Worch.
http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/planetquake/qdq/sbblite2_fp.avi
This is the first person recordings only. Still worth a download though if you want to see all the action up close!

Dimension Of The Gibbed - 305 MB
http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyondergames/movies/quakeworld/dotg.zip
This is a recammed version of the Dimension of the Gibbed movie, with goofy comments/plots and whatnot! We ran a series of contests on SDA, and this is the result of those contests. This movie is hilarious and definitely a must download! And to make things even more impressive, it was nearly a one-man effort!
http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyondergames/movies/quakeworld/dotg_fp.zip
This is the "light" version of the DotG movie. It's the first person recordings only, but it's still worth a download. You get to see how the tricks are done close-up, something you can't really see in the refilmed version.

SDA Promotion Video - 89,9 MB
http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyondergames/trailers/movies/quakeworld/sda_promo.avi
This is a fun little show-off movie made to promote SDA. It's high octane action spiced up with some hard pounding music. It was the first movie we released created with the JoeQuake engine courtesy of Jozsef Szalontai, who also is the man behind this movie.

the Rabbit Run (tRR)
http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyondergames/movies/quakeworld/trr.avi
This is an Easy Run (skill 0) through all of Quake in 10 minutes and 58 seconds! We haven't yet released a .pak file version of this movie, so this will have to do for now. This is the eyecandy version. Custom textures were used.
http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyondergames/movies/quakeworld/trr_gold_hq.avi
This is the normal version without any of the eyecandy stuff. For the high-bandwidth users.

Quake done Quicker - 710 MB
http://www.archive.org/details/Quake_Done_Quicker
This is the refilmed version of the 16:35 run through Quake on Nightmare skill.

Quake done Quick with a Vengeance - 165,8 MB
http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyondergames/movies/quakedonequick/qdqdivx.avi
The first movie we ever released in .avi form (the clever reader will notice the date is 5 days older than those of the Scourge done Slick 'Toon flicks, but don't let this fool you, QdQwav WAS actually released before, just not to the general public). It was originally released on the Quake done Quick site. It's our most popular movie to date, I'm not sure why though, 'cause several of the other movies are easily more impressive, SdS, DotG and tRR in particular. This doesn't mean this movie is bad though, it's just a tad outdated I'd say.

Scourge done Slick 'Toon - 131 MB
http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyondergames/movies/quakedonequick//SdSToon_Web_smooth_DivX.avi
These three movies were made with an old version of the tRR engine. Anthony Bailey added this weird looking effect to the engine. I'm not sure how viewing friendly it is, but it has its charm :-)
http://www.machinima.com/film/view&id=206
Same as above, just a smaller filesize for those with low-bandwidth.

There's more than one download location for each movie, so it might be worth visiting this link instead of clicking on the above links (some of the links are most likely broken):

O Zlda?
My only misgiving about the latest news update was that it implied that a dozen new quake runs come out every 3 days. I was thus worried that at least half of the updates on the front page would be about quake. Seeing now as that's probably not the case, I have no problem with it. It's not like this forum doesn't have other little niche communities within it for specific games, anyway. I'm not really sure why Quake updates weren't on the front page in the past.
Hey Ho Let's Go
Oh, and Dex, I'm happy to finally see Quake runs posted on the main page, they've been sorely missed :-)

As for the encodings, personally I'd prefer higher quality for all posted runs, but maybe that's just me. As an example, I wouldn't want to watch any of Kibumbi's Doom 3 runs in crap resolution either, it wouldn't do them justice, the same goes for Quake ;-)

Just my 2 cent.

Mainly because there were only Quake demo files before the latest update, for which I encoded some vids. Also yeah, there's a Quake update once every 3 weeks on average, I think. So no problem with the main site being flooded with Quake updates too much :).

Yeah, I am leaning towards HQ vids for all demos as well. I was very curious what people had to say about it, but I've gotten a bunch of opinions that HQ would do some good, so I'll talk with Enhasa about it :).

Nice update, but why is the nailgun floating in the HQ versions? It's like it's being played on widescreen, but it isn't. And what's with the 'grenade 0' slider in the d6 nm run?
Invisible avatar
For the 'floating' nailgun, it's because to cover a higher degree of vision I use a 100 fov for capping, which is slightly higher than the regular one. Nailgun gets a minimal bug because of that, which I figure is not too huge.

The 'grenade O' slider is the nefarious grenade counter (shows when will the closest grenade blow up, it's an option added by QDQStats written by Radix). Basil tends to forget to remove them and I overlooked it when capping the video, sorry about that :).

One thing I forgot to mention is that the e4m3_NRhistory uses demos from projects (basically like a segmented run of the whole game), hence the starting nailgun in some of them.
You deleted the videos from the first Quake news post in october 2008?

everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Nah, what happened is: since the main SDA server is low on space, we decided a while back to move the videos to dl like all the others. I keep a local copy of all the html, so I'm guessing what happened is dex did remember to fix the links, but of course then next update those changes were lost. This is why everyone on SDA tells me what changes to make instead of doing it themselves. I suppose I could keep the pages automatically synced with rsync or unison or something, but this situation is really rare anyway plus my connection is flaky which is why I don't bother to get on live when I'm playing xbox games offline either.

Anyway the links should work again.

BTW as random trivia, the whole reason this thread exists is because I pitched the idea to Stubgaard, which only happened because he came on #sda to talk about the main page becoming the news page, which only happened because of some unrelated topic some guy brought up on some thread on this subforum. So be grateful for this random guy. Wink

Edit: I found the thread in question. The thread really was started by "John Doe" (who later registered as vxd and whose only posts are in that thread). Somehow this is a really important thread that nobody realizes, because not only did the whole main page thing come from this, so did the rules rewrites and translation efforts, and so did going through the entire game list to put all the games under the right systems. And that thread was the result of Nate changing the then game list link to the full list, which was the result of some thread some other guy made earlier, and I'm sure you could keep going back if you were some crazy dude like possibly me.

Of course the real answer is that this is a load of bunk and all this would have happened later anyway regardless.

The actually levelname is "The Tomb Of Chak Toh Ich'Ak". The .bsp name is "tchak" and the name you have to label the demos for this particular level is "tcha". I hope that helps.
Hey Ho Let's Go
A new update is up (April 2nd):

http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake
sv nice
I guess Jason and I are going to have to have to start jammin' out some demos again then!

I hope we can find some that are interesting enough to encode into a video, like a side-by-side deal or something.  :O
Hey Ho Let's Go
Indeed :-)

And when on earth are you two going to start cranking out some ID coops?
