So, as most of you probably noticed, there is a Quake update on the main site, containing 768kbps .mp4 videos of the best demos from the update, as well as an old demo encoded at both 768kbps and a better looking Insane Quality version. However, this is just the first step, and in order to give you all a better experience of the Quake community, I would love to hear what you have to say about the format of the updates.

Maybe you want videos in more qualities? Maybe you want the updates to be done in a different way? Or maybe you just want to say if you liked the update or not? Whatever it is, post it here. It will be invaluable for future updates :).

No more ugly as fuck high-res textures for IQ encodes, pretty please :(.
Invisible avatar
The textures are 100% faithful, just higher res :P.

The weapon models are not faithful, but they are mostly close.
Yarr
Why does the shotgun appear on the right? I agree with groobo.
Invisible avatar
Ok, complaints noted, I shall move to totally faithful Quake weapon models for the next update, thanks a lot for the input :).
Yarr
The explosions in the NQ video aren't the original explosions, are they?
Invisible avatar
No, they are a JoeQuake (engine made specifically for speedrunning, which you can download on QuakeSDA) option. The reason I used them is that the vids are primarily directed at people who don't play Quake, I wanted even the NQ vids to showcase some of the special JoeQuake features.

I'm very interested what people have to say about the video qualities, namely if they want some additional quality like HQ for every demo. Is there enough demand for that?
Yarr
Ah, I see. I never noticed that link before. The site has moved, so you might want to update the link.
Invisible avatar
Oh haha, I never noticed the General Rules link to JoeQuake was to the old site, thanks for pointing this out :).
I did like the update though.
Stalker!
the update was good so there is no need for changes
I always wanted to see some of the IL runs of Quake. The only thing I ever saw was the rabbit run.
I'm probably in the minority for thinking this, but I don't like the idea of Quake junk being slapped on the main page. I know I haven't played the game (and don't really plan to), but it just seems like a waste of update space on a freaking advertisement for a likely "dead" (in terms of new runners) game. Heck, if the game wasn't dead, why would you bother with this update business?

Yes, we know it began with Quake. Yes, we know that some people think Quake is the best thing since sliced bread. And yes, we know the Quake guy is in the logo. Let it go already. This applies to all that "Quake is only a footnote now! SDA is ruined! NoOOoOOoOO!!!" stuff too. I know you mean these updates for the average Joe who grew up with the Xbox or what-have-you, but I'm willing to bet they still won't give a crap about Quake even with these videos available.

Sorry if this steps on a few toes.

Molotov: But I'm sure at least a couple of average joes who grew up with xbox and halo thinks rocket jumps and shortcuts are cool, and even if just one out of 100 of those guys come into SDA because of Quake, then we're successful

How is it a waste of update space? Encoding the Quake demos = more runs for people to watch. Should we stop posting Metroid run updates because we don't get nearly as many runs for Metroid games as we used to in 2004? I don't really see how updating with Quake runs hurts the site simply because the game is old.

Also, who is "we"?
molotov: you can think of it like the antidote to the problem you describe. quake is now just another game in the list and gets updates in the same place etc. i don't see there being updates unless there's actually something to update about, just like with other games.
I should learn not to post my opinions, because then I have to make rather tedious posts "defending" them or some crap.

If that's the mentality behind this shameless advertising, then more power to you. I watched that Peter Horvath run that people wank over last night, and I honestly found it to be stupidly boring. Other people don't, so perhaps I'm just being unfairly biased towards this Quake nonsense.

It just seems like most of the people who give a flying flip about Quake (enough to watch or make a run) already know about it, and already know where to go...making the shameless plugging seem out of place. If you want the 1 out of 100 that badly though, I guess there isn't a problem.

Obviously, I mean the "been here for x months or more" crowd at SDA. You had to have known what I meant, so I don't understand why you would ask. Tongue

I didn't really think of it like that. I like the sound of that concept, so I can shut up now.
yeah, same deal as with other games. no interest, then don't watch. really great that we never ended up having to charge subscription fees for downloads so people don't feel obligated to download - or even pay any attention at all to - some of the things we post.

Molotov: My main problem with how you're posting is that you're being ridiculously negative over something that like nate said, should be treated just like any other run that gets posted on the site. Calling Quake nonsense isn't even making a point, thems fightin' words. I'm sure there are people who could care less about Fire Emblem runs, but you don't see anyone calling FE runs nonsense or garbage.

And no, I didn't know what you meant by "we", because everyone who hopped onto SDA 2004 on is a really big group.

Anyways, what nate said.
wise fwom yo gwave
Yes, quit posting rpg runs, I never watch them, find them extremely boring, and think they serve no purpose at all.

I don't even know why I'm still "doing" mine!

Oh and I think putting quake on the main site is pretty cool.  I barely watch any runs anyway but it's always cool to see new stuff come up.
Lay waste to everything...but I still love SDA!
I like watching speedruns, so Quake runs on the main page = more stuff to watch for me = more fun.
That was a good idea.

Who the fuck you think you are to say this kind of stuff. Respect your elders for christ sake's.

I hope that contained at least some sarcasm... I personally didn't find it that interesting either, and by saying that I'm certainly not meaning "disrespect to my elders," I'm just making an observation as a watcher.

That said, I have no problem with Quake updates on the main page. More stuff for people to watch is always good, so why not? Especially as Nate and Mike have described how it should be treated just like any other run that gets posted on the site. I don't have any issues with that.

I AM FUCKED ANGRY
My rambling post in this great Topic.

Quake is a game with the history of the best created games ever in all the years.
But the most Users forget that the game Wolfenstein 3D was the revolution over all games in the history in the world. No Wolfenstein no Quake. No Quake no other FPS games.

I think some Users do not appreciate for the SDA Quake world. Quake was the game which the revolution over speedruns.

I would like watch a speedrun for the game Wolfenstein 3D, but this is a dream.

The best in this update is that the demo files was encoded to MP4 files. many thanks
boss
As long as the updates don't contain runs done on obscure user made maps, approved by quakesda or not, and no weird categories that aren't allowed in other games like id routes then it will be like every other game on sda and no one will bitch about it.
