Thunderbolt Forever :)
Let's collect the best engines there...

Tenebrae: http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/
MHQuake: http://www.mhquake.com/
JoeQuake: http://delfin.unideb.hu/~sj0002/
QuakeBJP: http://user.tninet.se/~xir870k/
DarkPlaces: http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/
FitzQuake: http://www.celephais.net/fitzquake/
Telejano: http://telejano.berlios.de/wiki3/
TyrQuake: http://disenchant.net/engine.html

Which one would you prefer? I'm currently using QuakeBJP by Bengt Jardrup, but would also try MHQuake, people say it looks pretty good while being a lot faster than Tenebrae...

There also were some other projects (QMB, Netchild, CheapHack, etc.), all developed from TomazQuake as well as Telejano, but their sites seem to be down...

Given this a speed running site, joequake surely rules the roost!
Hey Ho Let's Go
I've never tried any of those engines except for JoeQuake of course.
Thunderbolt Forever :)
Do you mean that JoeQuake preserves all physics significant for speed-running while other engines may change something there? But, e.g., neither Bengt Jardrup's Quake nor TyrQuake change anything critical in quake physics.
What's wrong with phpBB ?
Sadly, there are some engines that do change physics and stuff. The one that immediately springs to mind is DarkPlaces, which make it easier to get onto certain areas that are ou of reach without weapon-assisted movement. I can think of 2 such places just in e1m1.

Still, it's a nice engine that does everything I would want from a Quake engine, so I'll use it for everything else, and switch to JoeQuake (which is installed in a different folder) for speedrunning.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
ive alwayes wondered how to get darkplaces to work. The engine looks amazing, but ive never been able to get it to work. Im currently using joequake with the classic winquake
What's wrong with phpBB ?
The main trick is to not install it in the same folder as any other quake engine. This will probably mean that you need 2 Quake folders.

omg! wtf?
Qrack is cool, based on JoeQuake, but with some new features (like motion blur, cellshading, md3 support,  etc.)

http://www.quakeone.com/qrack/
Pro-Leroer
but Qrack didn't work with the latest Qd100qlite2...

it gives a creepy error about aloccated cache memory and simply does not run it

I had to download joequake just to watch that video..

for everything else it worked fine...

(I belive it didn't work out because of the amount of monster on the introduction bsp... but I'm just guessing)
Mumma
Weird, that... Isn't Qrack based on JoeQuake?

Anyways, the movie works in standard WinQuake. Supporting everything WinQuake supports should really be the low water mark for any modern day engine  Grin

Which engine and/or other updates would you recommend to make quake look as nice as possible? Besides Tenebrae that is, since Tenebrae immediately crashes when I try to start it (Vista problem, perhaps?).  Darkplaces seems pretty neat, are there other options?
Invisible avatar
DarkPlaces with the best texture packs. Besides that there's Tenebrae, of course.

Also, for QuakeWorld, FTE is quite pretty (or at least has the most awesome particle system), but I haven't played on many clients so I can't say.

Bear in mind you can only use JoeQuake or original clients if you want to record demos for SDA.
:(
What are some good texture packs? Smiley

I remember having a setup that I used, random weapon textures gathered here and there with the Quake Retexturing Project and the Quake Remodeling Project, and a few more misc. skins for other things.
Rygel's high quality pack at shub-hub.com is an excellent texture pack for DarkPlaces. However, most of the textures don't work with a conventional client like JoeQuake. What I did was download nQuake (QuakeWorld client, uses different demo file types), and take the weapon and monster models from that and used them in JoeQuake. To do this, make a folder called textures and put the models and bmodels folders in that folder. Then I downloaded the Quake Retexturing project's and Rygel's pack. I put the Quake retexturing project's textures in my textures folder and used rygel's textures to fill in the missing ones. This combo is good for mid-range graphics cards and above, and makes JoeQuake look great.  Grin
Hey Ho Let's Go
Idkbutlike2: Would it be possible for you to upload that combined texture pack somewhere? I'm too lazy to put together such a pack myself :-)
I'l try, but I seriously doubt it Undecided It's pretty big
Thanks for the rygel's hires texture tip!

The package mentioned above would be very nice, of course. Smiley

Edit: wow, in ultra quality rygel's pack is almost 3 gigabytes in size. Surely sounds strange for quake 1! Gotta check it out.
It's huge and doesn't seem to work with any clients besides DarkPlaces due to it's hefty system requirements. I only recommend using some of it's textures to fill in the ones the QRP doesn't have. Also, forget the weapons, they look horrible... Instead, download my collection of QuakeWorld skins and models here:
http://hosted.filefront.com/Fmsisstupid6

If you want to use it with JoeQuake, create a textures folder in your Id1 folder, and put the folders there. Also, place the pakx.pak (the "X" is supposed to be the next pak number you can have in your directory. If the highest you have is pak2, then make it pak3 etc.) in your Id1 folder, as this improves the original models in such a way:
Is there something like this for Quake 2 too?
Unfortunately no... Q2 just didn't get into the whole  "facelift" seen  Sad You're gonna have to merge hundreds of pak files to get a good one...
It's out there, a little disorganized perhaps, but something like http://www-personal.umich.edu/~jimw/q2/index.htm is a very bountiful resource.
Don't think!  feeeeeal
Where can I get Joe Quake, do I need anything else to play q1?  And what's the best q2 client?  links please, thanks in advance.
JoeQuake client can be found from here: http://joequake.runecentral.com/downloads.html
To speedrun quake, you should use qdqstats which is located here: http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/downloads.html
From the same page you can download all demos, maps and some other stuff.

I don't know much of q2, so I can't help you there.

Of course, read http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/rules.html and http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/faq.html
For more questions or just pure quake discussion, join #qdq on Quakenet irc server.

Gl hf with quake. Smiley
Don't think!  feeeeeal
Hey, thanks for the links.  Problem with JoeQuake though, it says couldn't load gfx.wad, don't you need something else in order to use JoeQuake, like some sort of other quake build?
sda loyalist
Yeah JoeQuake doesn't come with all the game data, you'll have to get a hold of the real Quake first and install it in the same place.
