Does vanilla Quake have an option or console command to turn off auto weapon switch? What about ports (e.g. ezQuake, JoeQuake, etc.)? Thanks in advance.

Aside from that I had a question regarding the preference of this command when it comes to other games. I know there are a lot of Quake vets here who have played it since the very beginning, including myself, and I was wondering what your preference is when it comes to auto weapon switch?

I started playing FPS when the genre was born. I grew up on Quake, Doom, Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem 3D, etc. All of these games have auto weapon switch enabled by default with no ability to change it, and because of that I've never wanted to change it. I like it on. I like being able to bhop through a map, pass through an RL and immediately have it in my hands without having to scroll my mouse wheel or take a finger off of my strafe keys to hit my RL hotkey potentially slowing my bhop. I prefer it in other games too. I played CS 1.6 and CSS competitively for a very long time and I've always left auto weapon switch on because it's what I've always been comfortable with and because there's no objective advantage to turning it off.

I believe Half-Life was one of the last goldsrc games to force auto weapon switch on, and then when Counter-Strike came out they implemented a console command to disable it. I understand that it's completely subjective and completely based on what's comfortable to the individual. I merely wanted to know what other Quake vets prefer when it comes to other games (note: single player AND multi player).

I think QuakeWorld has individual preferences for weapon switching but Quake and most clients based on it don't.

Many, many years ago (2005ish?) I used to leave it on. Then I had a scrim, or maybe a match, where we were ecoing and I was shooting at a guy and picked up a primary. The pause of taking out the new gun allowed the other guy to kill me and made my teammates very sad because iirc it was a 1v1. From that point on I never left autopickup on. I think most pro players keep it off too, for just that reason.

Having it on can be good if you really, really need to get the new primary out ASAP...but I think just spamming the primary button as soon as you run over one, although harder to do while also running, isn't as dangerous as losing control of the ability to shoot.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
It's true. I was very sad.
