The fields do reset the gun, however you can shoot portals in the lift on the way up. There is no such field at the beginning of the next level, so it should remember the last portal shot in the lift.
I used to be athiest until I realized I was God.
Between ch 18 and 19, i dont know about grobbo, but my hl2.exe always breaks, and windows feels it stops responding. The window goes 'dead' and the cursor turns into a 'waiting...'symbol for a bit, and then it comes back. This stops Fraps' recording too.

But... I just did 18, and the bug happend, but the portalgun symbol didn't dissapear. I don't know.

I have the exact massive freeze when going through the ch18-19 and escape_01_02 transitions, we had this conversation earlier. The problem with it is that afaik at least one verifier couldn't replicate it no matter what and it seems that it occurs randomly for me... Dunno, maybe it has something to do with pre-caching (I always turn everything down because of crap fps via the console commands which are not accessible through the options menu)? I have a couple of other theories but if it's not the case, I can't explain it.

edit: Anyway, here's a shortcut in chamber 9 a guy sent to me.
Waiting hurts my soul...
Nice, that looks pretty easy to pull off too.

lol, awesome. i tried that, and glados tells me 'the enrichment centre appoligizes for this, clearly broken, test chamber.' Tongue

If I can pull that trick off pretty consistently, I'll do as Mike first told me: "don't fuck around, buy a webcam, record yourself playing, win". Well, not literally but I got his point :P. Thumbs up for sub 18.

Nice find of that guy.  Grin
Maybe that trick works in some other chambers, too?
And good luck for a sub 18 run.  Wink

haha, it'd be funny for glados to say that throughout a speed run.  Grin  There probably are a few other chambers where this where this might work, but I'm not sure how helpful it would be.

This trick saves about 5 seconds only, but I can pull it off almost every time so I'll include it in the improvement. Sub 18 will be tough, but it's doable.
I guess you already knew it, but I found that you can enter a portal from the side or from behind when it's close enough to an edge. Maybe that can save half a second somewhere on a segmented run. ^^"

It's really easy to keep the cube on 17 when you do the boosting.  Just boost up the holding forward the whole time, then turn a bit to the right once you're over, then look all the way to the right so your looking parallel to the wall and view centered vertically.  Now you can release the AHK button and if you let go of the block it will move into you and you can pick up it.

Also when you use the turret to the destroy the second glass wall you can put up two portals on the left wall and hit the glass that way, the turret doesn't have to move hardly at all.

It's still really random, remember that you'll jump off the cube half of the time and won't be able to pick it up that way, because you can't predict how far into the "cycle" ahk is when you're realeasing the macro button. There's also a trigger on the ledge that will throw the cube back to the lower floor if you're not holding it.

The turret has a delay between shots so even if I'd set up portals that way, I'd have to wait exactly the same amount of time as doing it the intended way.
Are there any plans for runs of single levels? Like the Advanced Chambers or Challenges?

Yeah, that can be a pain on chamber 18 after placing a portal on the sloped wall in the turret room. If you go behind it and jump, you'll go right through the portal.
When I cube-jump if I hold forward key it's much more hit and miss.  All I do is jump and grab using no movement keys, and I face the left wall.  I try and go as high as I can which gives me an extra second to grab the cube on the way down.  Seems I just get more consistent jumps if I'm not holding movement keys.

Well I can do it every time and it's very easy.  Like I said you block the cube if you let go of it so you can grab again without it falling off the ledge.

Not sure but I thought the time between firing a rocket was less than the time it took to turn around and face the glass.
I used to be athiest until I realized I was God.
if it is, i think its by a fraction of a second... and doing it the other way increases the time it takes for both missles to reach their destination.

The only timesaver i can see there is to lay a portal before opening the door to get the "BEEP-bodobo" and rocket fire, then laying a portal across from the window right before the missle reaches the portal.

Most runners here are working on a SS or Segmented of the game.  But, feel free to talk about the Individual Level opportunities.

OK, so here's a list of things that will have an impact on the final time of the improved run:

testchmb_a_02, second part: drop the first cube directly at the switch so you don't have to fix its position anymore. (2s saved)

testchmb_a_05: use the portal-under-door trick. (4s saved)

testchmb_a_11: at the very end, place a portal near the force field and use it to get to the elevator instead of bhing. (1s saved)

testchmb_a_13: keep the companion cube after wallclimbing. (7s saved)

escape_01, rocket turret part: at the third glass, place a portal on the wall before opening the door, when the turret targets you, put the portal so that it faces the glass. (4s saved)

Did I forget about something? Looks quite promising btw. Also I need some advice on which webcam I should buy (good quality for a decent price). Right now I'm thinking about a microsoft vx-3000.
I used to be athiest until I realized I was God.
I don't know if you need a webcam just for this, but I recently got a Canon Powershot SD600, which is a digital camera that can also do video. I use it as my main camera for everything, and it takes standard SD memory cards, so it can record like 40 minutes of video at 640x480 at 30fps. Video quality is worse than other cameras I'm sure, but it's what I've been using on my (unsuccessful) portal attempts, and its good enough for this purpose.

Price is surely more than what you'll find for webcams, but if the webcam is just for this, you may wanna think about investing a bit more money and getting a lot more out of it.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Siyko, the best way to video capture is to attach a video recording device to an output from your video card.

By the way guys, did the patch fix the demo issues?

happyface - we're talking about a live-film for verification purposes only. Obviously a webcam or digital camera recording is not going to get published.
Posted this on Steam forums but seems relevant here, too.

Aperture Science webcam

They have other models, as well, like this one, which is probably a better camera and has a white faceplate.

Basically any webcam that can do 30 fps at a decent resolution would be preferable, I'm guessing.
Don't think!  feeeeeal
Wow I had no idea you could get a camera that could record a decent quality 30fps for so cheap.

You could prolly get even cheaper off ebay or craigslist
Long live SF64!

I say less time and thats it. The others fall into the 'superplay' category - just as we don't have a StarFox 64 high score, we shouldn't have a 'least steps' portal run that takes 30 seconds to line up a shot.

Star Fox 64 - woohoo!

I finally got to play portal at a friend's house, so I'm just now indulging in the videos of it being ripped apart... great stuff people.... I'm glad things are being submitted - there's always room for skepticism, "but dude, what if we're in the matrix, and he never really did it because this reality isn't even real and stuff..."

Anything posted on the internet that claims to be official is going to be asking for a leap of faith no matter what you do.  It's of course the job of verification to make that leap as small as possible.  Unless we invite the world to groobo's place to watch him do the run, we'll never really know, but that won't stop me from trusting SDA's verification system 100%.
