Portal - OoB Speedrun - Ending:
Not a Zelda 2 refrence
that's great, is it any slower then just waiting?

I don't care if it is or not. If it is for some reason, I don't give a shit. I beat the game already, so I can do what I want.

Portal - OoB Speedrun - Ending:

This is epic. Cheesy
Do Half-Life 2 speedruns also have as many glitches exploided? ie the runner manages to get outside of the virtual world thus able to skip past huge section of the game.

Yes. Watch HL2 Done Quick.
Willing to teach you the impossible
Just watched your Portal done pro on youtube.

I think you broke it. That is all I can really say

Can someone help me with using the startmovie command? I'm confused on how to use it. I want to make a video of HL2DQ quality. I just need a tutorial or something. Thanks.

Portal Done Pro is coming...

Here is a quality test I am uploading just to see how it looks on YouTube:

Here is a link to the direct AVI. It is Xvid encoded and 170 megs:

Not a Zelda 2 refrence
xvid isn't the best codec, but the u2b seems to like it ok even if the bitrate is kind of silly

What codec and bitrate would be better for creating the highest quality HD YOUTUBE videos?
Not a Zelda 2 refrence
actually looking at that resolution ( quite a bit higher then 1080p ) , that bitrate isn't so crazy. I'm no expert, but all the experts I know use x264.
If we were you, we would quit now.
The Xvid encoder is only used to capture the footage from the game directly. I will make versions of the speedrun in H.264 which is comparable to x264. The Xvid version will be the 'insane' quality version.

Portal Done Pro - Quality Test 2 - Chamber 8 - Third Person

It's share that whole part wasn't done all backwards, I think you could keep the ABH into the wall then blast off it into the lift.  I doesn't look like it be that hard to that extra bit backwards, but I know how much harder backwards bhopping can be than forwards.  I was thinking maybe using the highest possible fov could help with this.

You can't do a 90 degree turn at that speed with an ABH. You'd have to slow down anyway. I keep the maximum speed that I can do forward at that point. I don't seem to understand why people analyze this chamber the most, because there are many other improvement areas that are way more obvious than this level. The maximum you could save is 1 second or so. When analyzing a speedrun or a route, you want to spend the most time trying to improve areas that take the most time. The only plausible way that you could fully ABH to the elevator would be to clear the end platform's railing, but at that distance from the mid platform, you don't get enough height to be able to clear it completely. I'll draw a picture.

Probably saving time is not what they are really after, but simply coming up with a more impressive way to complete the chamber that YOU have not already done first. If there are any undiscovered paths, the game designers are probably the only ones who know about them.

When Portal 2 is released there will be a massive scramble by a specific age demographic to be the THE FIRST to discover glitches and coolest way to complete Portal 2 chambers just to have bragging rights and have the most hits on their youtube vids. You know, like back in the 4th grade when it was super cool to be the first in line for anything.... Smiley
Hey Demon,  now that you have finished the oob speedrun, do you think you could do the advanced chambers?
I wanted to submit the runs I did but lost my original video files and I'm not motivated enough to redo them.
And I think your runs would be faster anyway.

I hope you will make some sort of commentary to the speedrun since you have such a nice talent for expressing yourself (I am also waiting for your airboat speedrun!) thumbsup

My favorite video:

I got a new record on advanced chamber 13, 15 seconds. I'll try to reproduce all my records from time to time.

Hey folks, I have a few questions that have been bugging the hell out of me for a few days here, and was wondering if I could get some answers.

I've heard from numerous sources that it's better to have Portal Funnel turned OFF because it apparently slows you down a bit if it's on, like when attempting a fling for example, because Portal Funnel thinks you're trying to aim yourself into the floor, thus you lose a bit of your velocity? However, Portal Funnel is helpful for doing a lot of the "least steps" challenges due to using floor portals to keep yourself suspended in the air while grabbing cubes and generally transporting yourself around that way. I also hear that Portal Funnel adds in a bit of a randomness factor to the game's.. physics I believe it was? But then again, I also hear that Portal Funnel speeds you up if you jump into the outer area of a portal? That's right, I heard that it slows you down and speeds you up. Obviously both of these statements are from different sources but I want to know what the truth is here because I want to know whether I should be using this setting or not. Here are my questions, please follow the same format as what I've provided below for the answers if you choose to do so (e.g. 1. No, 2. No, etc.).

1. Does Portal Funnel *really* slow you down a bit when doing a fling (as well as few other things)?
2. Does Portal Funnel *really* add any sort of randomness to the game's physics and other things?
3. Does SDA and its runners generally regard Portal Funnel as the auto-aim-trainingwheels-snorefest that pretty much every console FPS is plagued with? I assume that if some of the things I mentioned above are true, Portal Funnel probably isn't too popular with SDA.
4. What is SDA's ruling on the usage of Portal Funnel? From the look of the Portal page, there's no mention of Portal Funnel whatsoever, so I'm assuming that it's personal preference and runs with and without Portal Funnel are grouped together.
5. What are the pros and cons of using Portal Funnel?
6. What are the pros and cons of NOT using Portal Funnel?

Thanks in advance to the helpful replies I'm sure I'll shortly receive. If you have the time, give me the most detailed reply you possibly can.

1. Yes
2. Possibly. See these:

3. No one cares either way.
4. No one cares either way.
5. Allows the portal to pull you to it. Some speed and entry angle are lost.
6. The entry angle to the portal is completely maintained on exit. This maintains speed also.

I use portal funnel because it doesn't effect much in terms of losing speed, but does help me when I need to enter floor portals.
I see. I understand completely now. Thank you very much, DemonStrate. That was the EXACT answer I was looking for.

I have also experimented with funneling in a similar manner to what you've shown us above and determined that my best bet would be to keep it off because of many of the things you said in your post and also simply because it's a form of aim-assistance. The whole idea of the game correcting errors I make bothers me, I prefer to learn to correct them myself and in turn become a better player.

I seem to do much better with it turned off anyways, I feel more "in control" not having to fight the assistance. Although having it on is extremely helpful with doing tricks where you have to keep your eyes somewhere other than where you're going to land, e.g. start a ceiling/floor loop, shoot ceiling portal onto the floor into a floor/floor loop, stay in floor/floor and replace the portals as needed to move wherever you're trying to move and do whatever it is you're trying to do, such as using the previously mentioned trick to grab the box off of the stationary platform in chamber 13 for the "least steps" challenge. It's still possible to do without funneling and just as easy to do, but you have that extra blanket of fuck-up insurance with funneling on in case you tap one of your movement keys while attempting it. Doing this with funneling off though, you have to make sure you're stationary when starting the loop and you get the exact same effect until you tap a movement key.

Thanks again for the extremely detailed, extremely helpful reply.
Chamber 8 with that route is impossible. There is not enough room to get enough speed to carry ABH over that last railing and even if you do have enough speed it's still impossible because that will cause you to miss the platform.

I've tried it more than enough, nuff said.

Thank you, Kingpin. Thats enough validation to me. The only way I could see would be to do a moon jump across the room, but then you would need an object from the previous level. And, if memory serves me, Chamber 7 or even Chamber 6 do not have any objects. The 'radios' do not count because I don't have them in my version of the game.
