Is there a reason why Solar Striker is in or with this goal?
This goal just makes it a raced autoscroller with hardly any room for variance.
I personal find that racing a shmup that isn't a points race is bad.

It's mainly there to have some variation in genre. This marathon is mostly about showcasing some of the best GB games out there and people also wanted a shmup. Solar Striker is one of the easiest and also one of the best (there actually aren't many Shmups on GB to begin with). That goal was chosen as it's the turning point of the game where it goes from easy to somewhat challenging and without proper knowledge of the game or overall familiarity with shmups, it would become unbeatable for some.

I understand that an auto scroller feels slow, especially in a race, but it's only a sub 10 minutes goal. Getting a Game Over in some of the other games like Contra or Super Mario Land would be a bigger set back then this.

My stink with this is that there's no real influence on this goal except beat it which I think is terrible for a speed setting. It's essentially just waiting for the game to be over.

I actually call it "Phase 1" in my splits. But basically, you beat a single Alpha metroid, which causes an earthquake to happen. That lowers some acid and lets you go to another area, where there are four more Alpha metroids lurking about. When you beat them, there's a second earthquake that happens. When that happens, you've beaten Phase 2.

Well that saying goes for every game, you are just waiting for it be over. The only difference is that in non-auto scrollers, you have to move the screen forward and in auto-scrollers the game does it for you. It really is just a false sense of slow progression because you can still make mistakes and die in either category.

Portable Marathon #1 will take place on the 30th of May (Time will be announced later but is estimated around 1PM/2PM EDT)

So is that going to be the time or has it been decided yet? I just want to know now so I can prepare to be around.

Yes, it will be around that time. The "registration" on the srl irc racing channel might start a little bit earlier so everyone can get in on time but the actual kick off of the race will happen between 1PM and 2PM EDT.
